In an attempt to track down problems I'm having wrt to BBDB and
Latin-9 characters, I've come across a problem. My understanding of
these issues isn't very complete at the moment. My guess is that even
when using the latin-unity package some of the characters are not
marked as a word-constituant...
For example:
thisshouldbeßonewordright?
Going to the start of that word, and hitting M-f advances to the ß.
Actually, the ß in this mail is a Latin-1 character, but the effect is
the same as with the iso-8859-15 encoded character.
Basically, how can I get those extra characters in the syntax table in
some kind of proper way? Or, are they supposed to be there already,
and is my installation screwed in some way?
Now onto what caused me to look for this. In mail-lib there are a
couple things that concern me. First, the regexps used to match names
won't work for names with latin encoded characters from iso-8859-15.
For example, here is one regexp:
(defconst mail-extr-first-letters (purecopy "A-Za-z"))
Taking a look at the Emacs CVS, they use [:alpha:], which (in theory)
should match the correct set of characters.
But, I tried changing this, and it didn't work as expected -- does
XEmacs support POSIX character classes?
(string-match "[:alpha:]" "test")
=> nil
I was going to go through the mail-extr.el file to find all the
changes, but decided to hold up until I found out the deal with POSIX
regexp classes. (since they're used fairly extensively in Emacs'
mail-lib).

default.
This allows a user to decide whether to see that
"Garbage collecting..." messages repeatedly.

21.4.8: fix minor Motif buglet

[ We may have to think a bit about this patch. ]
For some reason, XEmacs calls XtGetValues() upon widgets for which
the XmNlabelType resource does not exist. This causes garbage to be
returned for the XmNlabelType resource, which makes XEmacs think that
the widget is a label widget and then attempt to update the widget's
label. This patch has XEmacs not attempt to update non-label widgets,
but it uses Motif kludgery to do so: because XtGetValues() is a void
function, we set the variable, "type", to some "illegal" value before
calling XtGetValues(), and then check to see if the illegal value is
still there after calling XtGetValues().
Because of this, this patch is really just a simple workaround. I
suspect the real fix is to prevent xm_update_label() from being called
on non-label widgets (which I assume is the case, for widgets without
an XmNlabelType resource). However, I don't have the time to fully
investigate this.
[ I should say that I actually found this bug some months ago, and have
been using this fix for all that time, without any problems. ]

Once in a while, when I switch desktops, Xemacs hangs while repainting
the frame. Usually I have emacs frames (may be more than one) in all
my desktops - 10 of them. I can't reproduce this at will, but this
occurs almost every day and is not dependant on how long it has been
running. I can't relate it with the X/system load also. I am running
Windowmaker on top of openwindows. I tried using Xemacs 21.5 beta and
there also ran into the same trouble.

Buffer tabs get out of sync on compilation

Dear Bug Team!
when I save my changes in some source code buffer and want to compile
the changed file, I run the 'compile' command (which I have set up on
single-key shortcut, without interaction [1]). It works fine - the
frame is split into 2 windows, the bottom one shows the make output
while the source stays visible in the top window (which also keeps the
cursor) - *except* the line of tabs on the top of the frame (very nice
- makes XEmacs look a bit like JBuilder :-) ) changes from the list of
source file names to a single *compilation* tab (or *compilation* and
*grep* tabs, when I also have the *grep* buffer). It's as if the focus
changed to the *compilation* buffer - which it probably did,
temporarily, but the change is clearly supposed to be invisible, and
IMHO it should be invisible: the state of the tab bar should reflect
the selected window, right?

Dear Bug Team!
I attempted to update packages (tools/packages/update installed packages)
yesterday, and every internet site I tried came back "ftp.blah... does not
appear to be a pty". Today when I launch xemacs (Academic Rigor release on
Win2k), I get a console window listing one package after another with the
message "Loading c:\Program
Files\XEmacs\xemacs-packages\lisp\zenirc\auto-autoloads...done (file
auto-autoloads.el is newer)" (for each package I have installed), then the
regular xemacs window appears. What gives?

The 21.1 series is now at release 14, and the 21.4 series has been
pretty much stable for a year now. If this bothers you, upgrade.
A lot of changes and fixes to the syntax code have been made since
21.1.7; if you can replicate in a more recent release, please report
it again. First update your net-utils package so that M-x
report-emacs-bug goes to the developers' mailing list.
