Would it be possible to wrap the XEmacs specific parts of doc/Makefile
in a test for the presence of XEmacs.rules? Would that be acceptable,

I just tried XEmacs 21.4.8, the latest Gamma release, compiled it from
sources, and I have a problem with it - when exiting XEmacs, or when
closing a frame, in the X11 interface, it crashes with a core dump.
I looked at your PROBLEMS file, and the most similar problem I found
was the problem titled:
*** On Solaris 2.6, XEmacs dumps core when exiting.
But I am not on Solaris, it happens on remote displays as well, and
according to the stack trace it does not happen during a call to
XCloseDisplay.

It seems to me to be a bug because I compiled XEmacs 21.4.8 almost the
same way (added a few options) as I compiled XEmacs 21.4.4, which
works fine.

I'm trying to add a function to eiffel.el that uses the SmallEiffel
debugger. The debugger works in a slightly unusual way: you compile
your code with the extra "-trace-" option and then run the executable
and you're in the debugger.
So, here's what I figure I want to do:
1. Start the -trace compile and wait for it to finish.
2. If the exit status was "good" then run the executable.
So, to avoid messing with process filters and getting deep inside
compile.el, I thought this might do the trick:

Note that eif-compile-internal just calls compile-internal after
building the appropriate compile command, so it returns the
compilation buffer.
If I run the above, with input pending, on XEmacs 21.4.8 (with
GNOME/GTK+), it gets stuck in the loop. If I add a counter/message to
the loop, I can see it going round. That doesn't make sense to me,
since the process should eventually terminate (and thus leave the 'run
state). When I check process statuses using "ps", I find that the
compile subprocess is a zombie... Hmmm...
It seems to work fine on GNU Emacs 21.2.
Any ideas? Is it a bug in XEmacs? Should a zombie have status 'run?

i had a segfault in xemacs this afternoon. prior to the segfault,
xemacs had been up for several days, perhaps as long as a week. i had
twenty or more buffers open, a shell process, and a java-shell (from
jde). it was running on a solaris 2.8 system, connected to
reflection-x version 9 running on a win2k system (telecommuting is
cool...).
starting maybe 10 minutes before the crash, i noticed that the cursor
was blinking quickly & erratically. at the same time, i began to see
Xlib errors in my terminal window. here's a sample:

Need I say more?
Any mode that fucks up basic motion commands like "forward-word" so
badly has no business existing, let alone being loaded by default!

Why does "Help/Send Bug Report" in this version of xemacs try to
send mail to xemacs-beta(a)cvs.xemacs.org, which bounces?

It basically consists of doing one of three things:
1) If a Makefile was distributed in the package use it (often with a
few minor changes).
2) If it doesn't compile with 3 add a script that seems to compile
things ok (the only cases so far are the one starting this
conversation (unicode compile) and a few packages that seem to
prefer that their file get compiled separately (calc) or need a

This seems a reasonable choice. I'll look into doing this. Actually
it'd be nice to be able to do it more often than sumos come out. The
only thing that makes me nervous about this is getting something I
shouldn't and distributing it in debian and the problems getting to
you rather than me.
Is there a cvs tag I can look at across each package that means
stable?
Oh by the way when compiling the mule-ucs stuff I found a typo in
uethiopian in the provides line.

Can't compile event-gtk.c (patch applied)

Hi,
I tried to configure and compile --with-gtk today but got a
compilation error. (Version: Latest and greatest from CVS MAIN.)
Seems like the event_stream structure has changed and that event-gtk.c
isn't updated accordingly. An the other hand I don't know what I'm
doing so the patch applied just makes it compile and run for me. It is
quite likely that the fix is something else ...

I have been unable to build the packages. Here's the first error:

Makefile:89: *** target file `distclean' has both : and :: entries. Stop.
According to make's info:
When a target appears in multiple rules, all the rules must be the
same type: all ordinary, or all double-colon.
It seems that you should have gone through and verified that there
were no 'distclean:' rules in any of the makefiles.

version of 'report-xemacs-bug' that will Cc bug reports to
