Emacs understands these conventions by indenting a double-semicolon comment using TAB and by not changing the indentation of a triple-semicolon comment at all. You have a valid point, though. single-; comments srarting in column 0 should not be moved and comment-region would work as advertised! You opened my eyes! To All: Isn't this what we should do? garbage-collection-messages from FSF 21 years

FSF Emacs has a variable garbage-collection-messages, nil by default. [comp.emacs.xemacs] Package Customization Help 21 years, 1 month

I think this needs to be removed. Take the reference to managing packages via Customize out of the TeXinfo and remove the appropriate defcustoms. The less number of ways people have for managing packages the better (IMO). We can already do it: - Manually via FTP/tar individual packages - Manually via FTP/tar Sumo packages - Automagically via XEmacs Package Tools (mouse - menu choices) - Automagically via XEmacs Package Tools (keyboard - M-x commands) The Customize way seems to be broke. I don't think it would be worth the trouble to fix it, so let's take it out completely. EFS 1.20pre1 bug: set ls switches for efs only? 21 years, 2 months

Gruss bug team: not a bug, really, but I have my dired switches set to "-abl", but the ftp I'm connecting to: denmark% ftp ftp194.pair.com Connected to isris.pair.com. 220 ftp194.pair.com NcFTPd Server (licensed copy) ready. Name (ftp194.pair.com:turner): anonymous 331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password. only allows a subset of ls switches, so when I connect with efs I see: ftp> ls -abl 200 PORT command successful. 504 Only ls flags accepted are -C, -F, -l, -t, -r, -1, -S, -L, -R, and -p. now I could easily live without the -b option, but they don't even allow -a, which I definitely want for normal dired buffers I looked around in the efs customize options but didn't see a way to set ls switches specifically for efs clearly the remote system is broken, but what's the best way to work around it, other than setting dired's ls switches for this machine? thanks -- John A. MSW Console Frames in 21.4.2 for Cygwin 21 years, 6 months

In 21.4.2 for Cygwin, executing a Win app causes a blank MSDOS frame to open, and quickly close. I didn't see these with 21.1. Can anyone shed some light on this... please ? Given XEmacs now supports three display types (X, Windows and TTY), I figured I'd configuring out the Microsoft window system with ./configure --with-msw=no but alas, it made no difference. Build report below is with msw back in. A simple example - xemacs shell-mode running bash, type - bash> cmd /C pwd If you type the same thing from a bash shell in an xterm there is no DOS frame. I've tried M-x term under XEmacs 21.1.14 on both RedHat 6.2, 7.1 and Debian 2.2r3, and under XEmacs 21.4.4 on RedHat 7.1 (the platform I'm writing this report on). It doesn't seem to work properly, the principal problem being that \r characters (carriage returns) are somehow not reaching the terminal emulator, so that every time you press RETURN the display stair steps like this. I've poked around in the code a bit and verified that term-emulate-terminal is simply not being sent the \r characters. I've tried without a .emacs file just to make sure it wasn't my config. XEmacs 21.4.4 "Artificial Intelligence" is released. 21 years, 8 months

* XEmacs 21.4.4 "Artificial Intelligence" is released. "Artificial Intelligence" is the fifth in the OXYMORON series. Relative to XEmacs 21.4.3 "Academic Rigor", it contains a few typo fixes in the documentation, some minor bugfixes in the user interface, and some fixes to critical bugs, mostly in the MS Windows code. *** MS Windows users should NOT upgrade to 21.4.4 unless you *** *** are prepared to help debug certain known problems. Wait *** *** for 21.4.5. *** Unfortunately, there seems to be a bad bug somewhere in the new code for MS Windows, which causes frequent crashes. The primary Windows developer is currently out of the country, and I am about to leave for two weeks of vacation. So I decided to release "Artificial Intelligence" on the strength of the improvements on other platforms, and be prepared to make a new release to address the MS Windows issues and a few other pending patches immediately on my return. More detailed information about the changes is presented below. The first release in this series, Xemacs 21.4.0 "Solid Vapor", contained a large number of improvements and extensions to the current stable version, XEmacs 21.1.14. Besides the usual "no warranty" disclaimer (see etc/WARRANTY, sections 10 and 11), we are now experimenting with a level of stability intermediate between "beta" and "stable", dubbed "gamma". At this point all the developers and most of our beta testers trust the 21.4 code base with all their editing needs. However, for several reasons, for users who absolutely must minimize risk, we continue to recommend the 21.1 series. It seems likely that 21.4.5 will be released in about 3 weeks when I return from abroad, to address the MS Windows problems. It is hoped that the following release will be designated "stable." * Changes included in XEmacs 21.4.4 "Artificial Intelligence" This file briefly describes all changes to XEmacs in the OXYMORON series of releases. In principle there should be no user interface changes listed here, since this is intended to be a stable series. In practice, some bugfixes do involve user-visible changes. In general users should be happy about them, but they may affect workarounds you have put in place. So those that do are noted here with (**). Also, the MS Windows platform support is not fully mature, and the GTK platform support is explicitly experimental. In those cases improvements that provably do not affect other platforms are accepted. The platform affected is noted, and the change is flagged (**). Fixing a critical bug is not considered a "user interface change" in the sense that there should be no way for it to interfere with you getting more work done. The changesare grouped into run-time, build-time, and "documentation and data" changes.
