So, I just got around to enabling flyspell mode in my xemacs
initialization, using:
(global-flyspell-mode t)
The problem is that for some modes (like say emacs-lisp-mode - or any
other programming language mode) flyspell is being way too aggressive.
For example, it isn't terribly useful that flyspell tells me that
'defvar' is misspelled. ('defvar' is misspelled, but it isn't useful).
So anyway, I was thinking that it would be more useful if flyspell
only checked comments in programming modes.
Seems like it could be done with flyspell-mode-predicate
(put 'emacs-lisp-mode 'flyspell-mode-predicate '....)
like maybe flyspell could only look at words that are in the
font-lock-comment-face.
Has somebody else done this already? This issue seems vaguely
familiar.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
When I run xemacs (even from the compilation directory), it creates a
second empty window/frame. Starting xemacs with "-iconic" doesn't start
xemacs as an icon anyway.
Killing the empty frame kills all xemacs windows.
Using gnuclient (when xemacs is started with "-iconic -f gnuserv-start")
does create an empty frame in addition the the normal one.
I'm using gnome 1.4 on a FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT system with glib/gtk+ 1.2.10.

Status of ben-mule-21-5 [Mule on MS Win, etc]

sorry i have been out of the loop lately. my dsl has been down for a week [and
is still down!], so my connectivity is quite reduced. it's also been the first
week of school. i have recently read the messages and will try to fix the
problems mentioned. in the meantime i've done a lot more work; in particular,
the unicode encapsulation is fully present. what this means is:
[1] whenever running on nt, xemacs automatically uses the unicode versions of
the Windows API's, which are faster and more importantly allow text in arbitrary
languages [even mixed] to be passed back and forth.
[2] on 95, we use the built-in WideCharToMultiByte API to convert to the
multi-byte API and automatically use the ANSI versions of the Windows API's.
thus, we need no translation tables for particular windows codepages.
[3] we correctly support both input and display of IME [Japanese, Chinese, etc.]
and non-IME [Russian, Greek, Polish, Hebrew, etc.] languages, in both 95 and
NT. the only missing combination currently is IME input in 95, which is easy to
fix and is high on my list.
the above mean that we now can handle most languages without [too much] problem.
There is still the dreaded "Russian C-x" problem, which i'm in the middle of
fixing [C-x when in the Russian layout doesn't do what you think it should do
because the x key produces a Cyrillic character].
i've enabled file-coding by default in all circumstances; under unix non-mule
non-cygwin everything defaults to binary, so you get exactly what you'd get
without file-coding. you can change this, though, with a configure flag,
--with-default-encoding-detection or something, which puts back the automatic
file encoding detection that's normally present. [#### this may not work
perfectly quite yet.]
we still don't support pdump, Cygwin, or non-mule, [and perhaps unix] but i'm
working on those, too.
i'll have more time over the weekend and i'll answer specific emails then.
all of the above is checked in to branch `ben-mule-21-5'. I am updating the
file README.ben-mule-21-5 at the end of each day I do some work, and I've
recently created TODO.ben-mule-21-5, containing a prioritized list of what i'm
working on.
as always, i'm always looking for testers; bear in mind the above restrictions.

If I understand the issues correctly, there's good reason for that,
and this is unlikely to ever go in to 21.4.

I can see where it would be useful for module _developers_, but for
users in general Lisp must be _safe_. If you have an application that
requires this capability, I'd suggest a configure option for 21.5.
Or, if what you really want is the reinit capability, why not
implement that directly? That might be safe. Define a global
"in_ell_reinit" or some such and make the symbols.c assert
"(in_ell_reinit || ...)". The submitted patch looks very unsafe.

I'm looking for testers. There is a complete and fast implementation
in C of Unicode conversion, translations for almost all of the
standardly-defined charsets that load up automatically and
instantaneously at runtime, coding systems supporting the common
external representations of Unicode [utf-16, ucs-4, utf-8,
little-endian versions of utf-16 and ucs-4; utf-7 is sitting there
with abort[]s where the coding routines should go, just waiting for
somebody to implement], and a nice set of primitives for translating
characters<->codepoints and setting the priority lists used to control
codepoint->char lookup.
It's so far hooked into one place: the Windows IME. Currently I can
select the Japanese IME from the thing on my tray pad in the lower
right corner of the screen, and type Japanese into XEmacs, and you get
Japanese in XEmacs -- regardless of whether you set either your
current or global system locale to Japanese,and regardless of whether
you set your XEmacs lang env as Japanese. This should work for many
other languages, too -- Cyrillic, Chinese either Traditional or
Simplified, and many others, but YMMV. There may be some lurking
bugs (hardly surprising for something so raw).
To get at this, checkout using `ben-mule-21-5', NOT the simpler
*`mule-21-5'. For example

xemacs
or you get the idea. the `-r ben-mule-21-5' is important.
I keep track of my progress in a file called README.ben-mule-21-5 in
