The first pretest for XEmacs 21.4.5 is now available.
Check it out from CVS with "-r r21-4-5-rc1".
The big fixes are Ben's patches for "gc in windows proc", "setitimer",
and shell crashes on Windows.
I'm especially interested in reports from people who had the following
problems.
On Windows platforms:
1. "gc in windows procedure" crashes.
2. Failure to detect the "no-X11" version of XPM on Cygwin.
3. `mouse-track' problems.
4. Null quoting in subprocess arguments. (Ben's big patch as usual
included some random stuff, I don't know how much of those
problems it fixes.)
On Unix:
5. Arch-specific binaries failing to install under ${exec_prefix}.
This is _not_ a release candidate as it stands. There are several
patches I am waiting for advice on, and a couple dozen in total still
in the queue that I want to review again. I hope to post a release
candidate on Saturday my time, with a probable release early next week.
This code base builds and at least puts up a splash screen on Debian
`sid' Linux 2.2.18, Japanese Windows ME (Cygwin), and Japanese Windows
ME (native) so far.
The Cygwin build produced the following warnings I've not seen before:

Multiple instances of xemacs running when spawning subprocess

Dear Bug Team!
I'm running xemacs 21.4.3 on cygwin 1.3.3. When reading news using
Gnus 5.8.8, I regularly launches iexplore to browse urls posted in news
articles. This seems to spawn a new instance of xemacs. This is not
very nice on the system as each instance requires 25-30mb
memory. I.e. when spawning 8 instances of iexplore, I have 9 instances
of xemacs running (requiring 270mb of memory) in addition to the 8
(expected) instances of iexplorer

I assume its a problem with the way processes are spawned using cygwin
(fork?) but I'm not sure whether this is a bug in xemacs, gnus or cygwin...

EFS is hosed under my 21.5-b3 cvs build.
Try to open any EFS file name, e.g. /philipa＠localhost:/. It correctly
prompts for password, supply the password and XEmacs becomes a factory
for ftp processes. Fine under 21.5-b0.

Description:
I have tried to use gnuclient to connect to XEmacs running on another machine
at the same LAN. Everytime I finish the gnuclient session (C-x #) XEmacs on
the remote machine crashes and dumps core. This happens also if XEmacs is
started with the -q option.
The gnuserv on the remote machine uses MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 security.

The reason why `(not (eolp))' is wrong in this situation is:
When we write a Japanese text using Egg, we will put a hiragana
text in advance of a kanji text. Then we will convert it to a
kanji text (choose one among some candidates) and fix it. Here
is a sample picture for that work:
If such a kanji text is inserted in the end of a buffer, the
hook `after-change-functions' will receive the positions of the
beginning and end of the range of a kanji text as arguments.
So the argument `end' points to the end of a buffer, in other
words, it points to `eol'. However the cursor is in the
beginning of a kanji text at that time. It is a rough
explanation how an error is occurred.

Yes, I did overwrite the existing installation. It works fine.
