Dear Bug Team!
In editing a C++ source file, I repeatedly get a core dump on hitting
tab when the point is on the next blank line following a comment that
contains an unmatched apostrophe (sic). (Actually, you just need such
a comment somewhere in the file before the point.)
For example:

* An apostrophe's a problem.
*****************************************************************************/
This is using the latest CVS HEAD xemacs and packages too; I've tested
that this is repeatable on my machine w/ xemacs --vanilla. (I'm also
using a pre-release version of cygwin but that doesn't seem to be an
issue here.) I've attached a gdb stack trace and the lisp backtrace
too.

I haven't had time to look into this in detail, but I wonder
if anyone has any experience with building xemacs with
--pdump without a prior installation of XEmacs (in the
"buildroot", if you like)?
Could this be an issue?

package system: questions, suggestions, alien

I admit I rarely have used the package system other than from time to
time download a new Sumo tarball.
Private packages I maintain in the old way, ie downloading in a
private dir, compiling, and then setting the path appropriately. It
leads to huge home directory and I would like to change.
Now I tried to use the package-tools to maintain 3d party products.
X-symbol for example already can be downloaded in package form.
After reading the FAQS the README.packages
and
http://www.xemacs.org/Documentation/beta/html/xemacs_25.html#SEC261
The following questions remain.
1. I want to download a new (let's say even a official) package to a
temporary directory and install/update it from there. So I thought
(pui-add-install-directory "~/tmp") would do the job, in the sense
that pui-list-package would list my all the package contained in
this directory and flag them as uninstall. This was not the case.
2. I want to list 3 party packages via pui-list-packages, which can be in
prefix/xemacs/site-packages
or in
~/.xemacs/xemacs-packages
so I was looking for a variable, like
pui-3-party-global-dir
pui-3-party-local-dir
did not find any, so I played with
pui-add-install-directory
but as I understand this is for setting an additional directory for
Installation. I presume I miss something fundamental. Maybe 3d party
package are not meant to be controlled by pui? If so I consider this
as a severe disadvantage!
3. Version numbers: couldn't the package numbers coincide with the
version numbers of the maintainer? vm now does :), but auctex and
others do not. Yes pressing I will give this information, but
anyhow the convenience would be greater if the numbers coincided.
4. May be that has been asked already, but are there plans to write a
tool, which allows to convert an already compiled package to to the
xemacs package standard?. I am thinking of something equivalent to
ALIEN for tgz2rpm.

Package loading problem with X-emacs 21.4 and higher

I've just installed Redhat 7.3 on several systems. 7.3 comes with XEmacs
21.4.6. For some reason Xemacs 21.4 will not automatically load the
verilog-mode.el package (located in xemacs-packages/lisp/prog-modes). I
built and tried 21.4.8 and 21.5.6, both of which behaved in the same
manner. I was able to work around the problem by explicitly loading the
package in my init.el file but never the less this points to a serious
problem in the package system. XEmacs 21.1 which shipped with Redhat 7.2
seems to work fine, the problem must therefore have been introduced in
21.4.

xemacs 21.4.8 crash on linux

This is a very occasional (but frequent enough to really annoy)
crash when I switching buffers using the electric-buffer-list:
xemacs crashes immediately upon selecting the new buffer.
XEmacs is 21.4.8; packages are xemacs-sumo from 22 May 2002,
though I've had the same crash when using an xemacs-sumo from
30 Aug 1999; platform is a pretty clean install of SuSE Linux
8.0, with not much else besides a few additional fonts.

I think I've been staring at this for too long, I just can't figure
out what is going wrong here. :-(
Take a look at this function and tell me why it *only* commits the
Makefile and *not* the ChangeLog...

If you need to see the whole picture, that function is from
'pkg-build.el' in my directory (youngs) in the "xemacs-builds" CVS
module.
There's free beer to whoever solves this for me.[1]

bug... When I open a directory with find-file and then try to open any
file in it with dired-advertised-find-file, XEmacs complaints that

`call-process-internal' is broken

`call-process-internal' is documented to "[...] Insert output in
BUFFER before point; [...]" (And that's how it used to behave until
sometime last week.)
However, it inserts the output *after* the point, which is, for
example, the cause of the recent Dired breakage.
Could you fix this, Ben? Should be easy for you ...

21.4.8 does not solve fontlock/re-search-forward crash (cygwin)

Problem: Same as every other build since 21.4.3 (which aborts and survives):

I note that the release notes say "However, there still remain a few
outstanding problems with fontlock that must be fixed before we retire
21.1", but I can't find any description of these problems by searching
the archive -- have I hit them, or is this something else?
