That should be enough for now---hopefully GNU Emacs 21.2 will be
available for long enough. I accept Steve's ruling on the matter.
The main reason for my complaint was that *I* did the original port of
diff-mode which pcl-cvs and dired (which I also did) depend on, and I
was expecting to some day to do further work on those. So I was only
being selfish---I didn't expect you to create .upstream versions of
other files.
When there are local changes, .upstream files help a great deal. I
had a bitch of a time porting a newer version of pcl-cvs due to the
absence of them.

In the current (HEAD) version of XEmacs in -nw mode, ie within an
xterm, I have to type RET twice to get an effect. This is, most of
the time, just a nuisance, but it causes grief within Gnus and Info
Mode.

this issue does not belong into xemacs-patches, would'nt you agree?
One might argue it should go to xemacs-design instead of xemacs-beta.
Which issues specifically would this change fix?
How would one turn on syntax tables if your change were inplemented?

Thanks again, the patch applies ok now. However, I could not reproduce
the problem you described with the non-patched diff-mode, though I only
tried with the patch you sent for it. OTOH, the patch didn't seem to
break anything.
If possible, I'd like to see a sample diff/patch where the problem
occurs; could you send me one (and Cc: xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org)?
I'll put your diff-mode patch on hold for this.
Additionally, since the XEmacs diff-mode.el is now essentially same as
the GNU Emacs 21.2 one, I suspect they might have these problems too,
and think they'd be grateful for a patch as well :)

No, if we were to do that the package repository would almost double
in size overnight.[1] IMO .upstreams should only be needed if there is
some reason that makes it difficult or impossible to track otherwise.
What happens all too often with the .upstream files is that the
package in question gets synched with a newer version with no thought
paid to the .upstream file, rendering it useless. Or the .upstream
file is taken into account when doing the sync, but that file itself
isn't updated, rendering it useless for the next time.

Weird. I've been building Emacs/XEmacs for years and years under
HP-UX (and I'm still on 10.20), and I can't remember a time when I had

If your site is patch-phobic, then the problem may be that you're
using buggy X11 libraries. HP has a seeming boatload of patches for
X11, and you really should (but probably don't) have somewhat recent
patches.
[ As a side note, I've got something like 120+ patches installed on my
old HP-UX 10.20 workstation, although I don't strictly need all of
them. ]
I'm not seeing any clipboard hangs, although I am using 21.4.5, and
not 21.4.6.

Dear Bug Team!
When I first startup Xemacs and try to do a print, not a pretty
print, it gives me the following message...
Symbol's value as variable is void: coding-system-for-write
I started to encounter this problem when I updated to the newest
packages.
If I do a pretty print it works fine and all following prints
also work. So to print I have to do a pretty print first.
This could simply be a configuration problem on my part.

Stranger and stranger....
Based on Stephen suggestions, I took the -g out of cflags. With -O it
still failed in faces. Then I set cflags to +O3 -- and it worked !!!?
So, basically on hpux 10.20 with HP's ansic compiler,

You can build xemacs 21.4.6 only with the +O3 or +O4 optimization
levels. Debug, or even default optimization will result in a temacs
which fails at loading and dumping faces.el.
Only problem now is that I was trying to build with debug to see if I
could trace down the hangs I'm getting apparently when kill-new tells
interprogram-cut-function to use own-clipboard. Has anyone else seen
this hang?

I don't know where you got this idea. On the contrary, I sent email
to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org on 8/15/2001, asking that someone take
ownership of the project, which is still listed as belonging to N/A.
Adrian wrote xemacs-review(a)xemacs.org (and CCed me) on 8/23/2001,
asking for someone to do it, and nothing happened after that. I wrote
again on 11/20/2001, and had no reply. Please don't blame us for
this.
