Nasty interaction of user-mail-address with init file

If you use desktop.el to save xemacs sessions, and have HTML files
open when you quit, then on the following session psgml-html will get
loaded, ask you for your mailing address, and trash your custom file.
I don't know quite what to do about this; it's not really psgml-html's
fault, it's user-mail-address that's doing the dirty deed.
I suspect this has "suddenly" become a problem because of
2001-04-17 Didier Verna <didier(a)xemacs.org>
* startup.el (load-user-init-file): define `custom-file' before
loading the user's init file.
(which actually only got in to 21.4 in 21.4.4, 2001-07-28). Before
that, custom-file was nil at this point, so no harm could be done (I
think, not yet tested).
I will test this and probably revert for 21.4.7 if reversion prevents
the problem. I suggest reverting in 21.5, too, unless a real fix can
developed _really_ fast.

o The bug exists also when I run xemacs -q.
o It's my understanding that hexl.el (for editing
binaries in hex dump format) is part of the
xemacs-packages distribution. (I've used it for at
least a decade, since long before the XEmacs
distribution took its present form.) It's definitely
located in my xemacs-packages tree. I have not used
it in quite a while, perhaps a year. It has never
failed before now.
o I do note that it is not listed from Tools =>
Packages => List and Install. I guessed it's
contained within the text-modes package, so just
updated that and started a fresh XEmacs. The bug
remains.
o The only reference I can find to get-coding-system in
all the elisp files is in coding.el, which says this:
(defalias 'check-coding-system 'get-coding-system)
I find no direct reference to check-coding-system in
hexl.el. I can't track it any further.
o I tried posting this problem on comp.emacs.xemacs but
no one responded. I do hope this is the right place
to report such things.
o I was a beta tester for XEmacs a long time ago, but
have been out of the loop for several years. (FWIW)

Until we start writing and approving specs (PEPs, anyone?), the
existing behavior is the spec.
Anything that changes existing user-visible behavior that is not
contrary to existing documentation should be submitted as a separate
change, and flagged as an enhancement. Probably it would be a good
idea to submit for discussion on xemacs-beta first.
This looks like a good change to me, but the problem here is that at
the moment we don't have a good way to communicate this kind of change
to package users.

Problem compiling texis latest CVS (for sure this time)

Below you can find the messages I get at the end of a failed compile. This
came from the latest CVS. I got the same thing yesterday at work on
similarly configured SuSE 7.3 box.
I know I posted a crash about an obsolete version last time. I took the
following commands directly from `history' so others can see if I did that
part correctly.

Hi Folks!
Of late, the xemacs-patches mailing list is turning into a bit of a
shambles. This list is _*NOT*_ for general discussions.
There are _only_ 2 types of posts that should end up on
xemacs-patches...
- Patch submissions.
- Patch review followups (something with a keyword in it).
If any patch submission requires any discussion beyond the initial
submission and review (APPROVE VETO etc) that discussion should take
place on xemacs-beta.
Unfortunately this means that you may have to manually change the
"To:" header in your followup (not necessary if you are following up
to a patch that was reviewed with 'patch-keywords.el' _and_ your MUA
isn't broken). Oh, and please don't just Cc xemacs-beta. We don't
want this kind of stuff on xemacs-patches.
I'll see what I can do about automatically filtering out the
incorrectly posted messages and forwarding them to xemacs-beta. But
in the meantime, see the previous paragraph.
