The 'uninteresting' seemed to fit in with 'uninstalled' better (since
these boring packages are a subclass of uninstalled) also,
uninteresting seemed less pejorative than 'boring'. But, I'm easy ...

I tried using the invisible extent property.

I got a blank line where each of the mule packages were.
I got:

ediff 1.37 Interface over GNU patch.
I don't particularly like blank line look, so then I figured out
that the newline character at the end isn't in the extent.

Ok, so no blank lines now. I don't think that change breaks anything.
Then doing

Causes the boring invisible lines to become visible.
Which is kind of cool. Maybe that can go on the 'b' key

Well, now hold on there. I think you want both, a way to change the
face and to make the package line invisible.
I think you also want this choice for the other package-face possibilities.
In particular make packages that are up to date invisible. (Ie don't
bug me about the things that I don't have to do)

Yea, ok. I think you have an extra set of parens around the all mule choice.
The default should certainly be nil if the default action is to make
these packages invisible.

The change here for pui-up-to-date-package-face depends on what your
definition of boring is and where you want to plug this feature in at.
My definition of boring is packages that are not installed and that I
never want to install (ie mule). Packages that are installed, but out
of date are by my definition *not* boring.
Intercepting at pui-package-symbol-char is an easy way to implement
my particular definition, and also allows you to make up-to-date
packages invisible.

How to install XEmacs with different names?

Are there any ways to install XEmacs binaries together in the same
environment that are compiled with different configuration options?
I've tried `--program-transform-name=s/xemacs/xemacs-nomule/' but it's
no effect.

When I invoke the Open button, and double-click on the folders, the
second
folder I pick crashes xemacs-gtk-gnome.
1) new xemacs-gtk-gnome
2) Toolbar->Open
--> dialog opens
3) scroll down, double click in left-hand side on "Writings" folder
4) double-click on "latex" folder
--> crash
It's been happening with recent mandrake rpm's. Maybe it's mandrake, I'm
on
Mandrake 8.2beta2.

If I manually type in the directory names, and hit return the directory
contents open up and I can middle click to select a file.

I've been working on the internationalized version of Mailman
recently, and I wanted to test multibyte charset support
(e.g. Japanese), so I built a version of XEmacs 21.4.6 configured
--with-mule as the only configure option. This actually works really
great; I can coax Mailman 2.1a4+ to send me a Japanese password
reminder and I see lots of pretty characters in my VM windows. A
friend of mine who can read Japanese confirms that the messages say
what their supposed to say <wink>.
However, I've noticed one incompatibility so far. I have some files
which are encrypted with GnuPG 1.0.6. In the non-MULE version of
21.4.6 (i.e. built with no configure options), I can simply visit the
file, XEmacs prompts for the encryption key which I enter, and I'm
presented with the decrypted file in a buffer.
However, when configured with --with-mule, after entering the
encryption key, the decrypt fails and I'm left with this in the
buffer:
gpg: fatal: zlib inflate problem: incorrect data check^Msecmem usage: 2272/2432 bytes in 6/7 blocks of pool 2432/16384
(single character ^M replaced for transport)
Actually everything from the ^M onward is displayed as an elipsis.
I've confirmed that my recent updating of all packages is not the
cause because I rebuild from source without MULE and I can still
decrypt the file. It's definitely a breakage --with-mule.
Anybody have any ideas? Known bug? Googling didn't turn up much
useful, except a seemingly unrelated couple of messages in the gnupg
lists.
If it weren't for this, I'd probably use a MULE-ified XEmacs all the
time. It certainly helps for developing MM2.1 and it also makes all
that spam I get look much prettier. :)
FTR: RH6.1 (mostly), XEmacs 21.4.6, latest packages. I believe that
I'm using crypt.el from the standard, and current, os-utils package.

Shouldn't people test a release before it is released? Making to-be
stable releases available on a branch (and documenting that) seems like
common practice. Only mentioning the tag on xemacs-beta limits the
audience to stable release testers quite alot.

I don't think people will be upset if code on candidate-21-4 is unstable.
Moving branches for to-be stable releases is often completely broken in
lots of projects. If you get anything from CVS that isn't marked as a
release, you shouldn't expect it to work.

Tweaks to lispref manual?

FYI,
As Stephen has sentenced me to some lispref mangling as part of my
pique penance, I'd like to solicit some comments on some possible
additional changes:
* Packaging currently occupies two (2) chapters:
Chapter 2: The Xemacs Packaging System
Chapter 3: An Overview of the XEmacs Packaging System
Shouldn't this be one chapter, with "An Overview of the XEmacs
Packaging System" being a section? Granted, there would currently be
only one section (with everything else being a subsection or
subsubsection of this), but it appears Stephen would add additional
sections in the future (or, we could just merge the top-level text of
the overview into the end of "The Xemacs Packaging System").
* Currently, the packaging info is at the beginning of the lispref
manual. Shouldn't this be placed near the end? The rest of the
manual starts out with the basics of Emacs-Lisp, and gets
progressively more complex. It seems that a more logical place for it
would be after the section on Mule (or some similar place).
* Should we also update the edition history, version, and copyright
notices? The latest edition history says:
XEmacs Lisp Reference Manual (for 21.0) v3.3, April 1998
The version is:

Adrian suggested to move this discussion back from xemacs-patches to
xemacs-beta:
The problem: The menu-entry: Edit->Bookmarks->Jump-to-Bookmark does
not automagically load the default bookmark file (at least in my
21.1.14). To see this do:
- create a bookmarks-file: ~/.emacs.bmk
- start xemacs: $xemacs -q
=> Edit->Bookmarks->Jump-to-Bookmark is not active
(only after doing: Edit->Bookmarks->Load-a-bookmark-file, it will
be activated)
I consider this a bug, since the help text of bookmark-load says:
Your own personal bookmark file, `~/.emacs.bmk', is maintained
automatically by Emacs; you shouldn't need to load it explicitly.
The following patch solves this problem for me because it makes sure
the default bookmark file is loaded every time one accesses the
menu-entry Edit->Bookmarks:

I saved a file "C:\entw\BCIBridge\java\KSBP025Client.java" with "save as"
as "C:\entw\BCIBridge\java\ProdKSBP025.java" but the file name indicator
on the top didn't the name of the file, which should be ProdKSBP025.java
(now the active file!) after the name change now.
