(I answered to xemacs-patches first, I'm resending my comment here. As
mail-lib maintainer I don't have a problem with accepting this, but I
think the real issue is if the XEmacs core should change, so any insight
on that would be good.)

FWIW my feelings are that having XEmacs internal stuff in (supposedly)
externally maintained files (browse-url.el) is less than perfect.
(Synching the file with the external source becomes a pain, someone
need to look over the XEmacs specific and decide that they indeed are
XEmacs specific and that they are still valid even after the other
changes. This review has to be done every time the file is synched.
There are more fun things to do..)
But I wouldn't have anything against putting this in a new file,
e.g. xemacs-url.el, in the mail-lib package, since I agree it may be
easier to maintain this in a package than in the core.
So assuming the patch is good (I didn't look at it, sorry) and that it
doesn't _have_ to be in browse-url.el but just in any package (and I
guess mail-lib would be a suitable place), MHO is to move it into a
mail-lib/xemacs-url.el.

Every time you compile one of the beta releases, please send mail to
<xemacs-build-reports(a)xemacs.org> with the following information:
- what hardware/OS you tried
- version of X11
- which libraries were used, and versions (Motif, Athena, Xpm)
- whether you were successful; if not, what happened
- whether you needed to make any changes to make it run
- how much time you have spent running the beta recently
Emacs can generate a build report for you. All you need to do is:
1. M-x customize-group RET build-report RET
Customize and save any settings you change.
2. M-x build-report RET
Any time you find a bug, try to reproduce it with -q.
If it's display related, try it with no X resources loaded. If the
bug goes away, try to narrow it down to the particular resource that
is problematic.
Always report bugs to the xemacs-beta list. DO NOT report them
directly to a maintainer.
If at all possible get the full distribution instead of applying the
patches. It's less prone to error that way, and you're less likely to
forget to report about other changes you've had to make.
If you have to make changes, it's easier if you send patches than if
you just say what changes to make. When sending patches, please use
unified diffs (diff -u). That bears repeating. When sending patches,
please use unified diffs (diff -u). If your diff doesn't support `-u'
please consider getting one that does (like GNU diff). Patches should
always be sent to <xemacs-patches(a)xemacs.org>

I'm committing this in a day or so. I've already tested it. The purpose,
as described in a previous message, is to rationalize the names used for
various integral types, so that they match their intended uses, and
eliminate types that were not semantically different from each other.

The great integral types renaming.
I ran the following script to do the conversion. (NOTE: This script
is idempotent. You can safely run it multiple times and it will
not screw up previous results -- in fact, it will do nothing if
nothing has changed. Thus, it can be run repeatedly as necessary
to handle patches coming in from old workspaces, or old branches.)
There are two tags, just before and just after the change:
`pre-integral-type-rename' and `post-integral-type-rename'. When
merging code from the main trunk into a branch, the best thing to
do is first merge up to `pre-integral-type-rename', then apply the
script and associated changes, then merge from
`post-integral-type-change' to the present. (Alternatively, just do
the merging in one operation; but you may then have a lot of
conflicts needing to be resolved by hand.)

In addition to those programs, I needed to fix up a few other
things, particularly relating to the duplicate definitions of
types, now that some types merged with others. Specifically:
1. in lisp.h, removed duplicate declarations of Bytecount. The
changed code should now look like this: (In each code snippet
below, the first and last lines are the same as the original, as
are all lines outside of those lines. That allows you to locate
the section to be replaced, and replace the stuff in that
section, verifying that there isn't anything new added that
would need to be kept.)

Rewrote the comment about this type. The changed code should

using Lstream_read(), Lstream_write(), and related functions.
Originally it was long, which worked fine; Martin "corrected" these to
size_t and ssize_t on the grounds that this is theoretically cleaner and
is in keeping with the C standards. Unfortunately, this practice is
horribly error-prone due to design flaws in the way that mixed
signed/unsigned arithmetic happens. In fact, by doing this change,
Martin introduced a subtle but fatal error that caused the operation of
sending large mail messages to the SMTP server under Windows to fail.
By putting all values back to be signed, avoiding any signed/unsigned
mixing, the bug immediately went away. The type then in use was
Lstream_Data_Count, so that it be reverted cleanly if a vote came to
that. Now it is Bytecount.
Some earlier comments about why the type must be signed: This MUST BE
SIGNED, since it also is used in functions that return the number of
bytes actually read to or written from in an operation, and these
functions can return -1 to signal error.
Note that the standard Unix read() and write() functions define the
count going in as a size_t, which is UNSIGNED, and the count going
out as an ssize_t, which is SIGNED. This is a horrible design
flaw. Not only is it highly likely to lead to logic errors when a
-1 gets interpreted as a large positive number, but operations are
bound to fail in all sorts of horrible ways when a number in the
upper-half of the size_t range is passed in -- this number is
unrepresentable as an ssize_t, so code that checks to see how many
bytes are actually written (which is mandatory if you are dealing
with certain types of devices) will get completely screwed up.

Problems with site packages

Hi,
I've installed xemacs from CVS this weekend and now I'm trying to
re-enable all the packages I used to use. But I'm having trouble
with packages which are not in the xemacs installer...
First, where do I put the Lisp files? README.packages says
$prefix/lib/xemacs/site-packages/ (i.e. by default
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/site-packages/ ), but that doesn't seem to work: I
have the remem.el file (from the Remembrance Agent,
http://rhodes.www.media.mit.edu/people/rhodes/RA/ ) in there
and yet evaluating (load "remem.el") gives just
Cannot open load file: remem.el
When I move remem.el to /usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.5-b3/lisp (which
I probably shouldn't...), it's found but still can't be loaded:
Cannot open load file: overlay
remem.el contains (require 'overlay) , so apparently I need some
other package - but which one? My previous xemacs version (RPM in
SuSE Linux 6.4, apparently based on xemacs 21.1.8) used to work...

send your patches to xemacs-patches(a)xemacs.org.
Please produce them using diff -u, if possible.
The first few patches you may want to send to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org
instead, where more XEmacs developers may review them and give useful
critique.

Doing "man" makes "find-file" put every file in a new window

In XEmacs 21.4 (patch 0) "Solid Vapor" [Lucid] (i686-pc-cygwin) of Tue Apr 17 2001 on SHALOM
configured using `configure --with-netinstall --with-x=no --bindir=/usr/local/bin/i686-pc-cygwin'
Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
I may have mentioned this informally a while ago, but I may never have actually
reported it.
I find that normally, "find-file-other-window" and "find-file" both work
correctly, opening a new file in either the other window or the current window, but in the same frame.
When I use the "manual-entry" command, it correctly opens the man page in a
separate frame.
If I then do "find-file-other-window", it opens up the new file in a separate
frame. All subsequence calls to "find-file-other-window" open up new frames.
However, if I then do "load-library" and specify "files", the next and
subsequent calls to "find-file-other-window" go back to the correct behavior.
During this, the behavior of "find-file" does not change, it always opens up a
new window in the same window in the same frame.
I'm pretty certain this is happening because of the following piece of code in
my "$HOME/.xemacs/init.el", which I got off the net at some point, to allow man
pages to be put into separate frames:

If I understand this correctly, the intent of this advice is, inside the body
of the "letf", it will make "switch-to-buffer-other-window" actually do
"switch-to-buffer-other-frame", then do the advised function, and then on exit
from the "letf", the old behavior is restored.
Either I'm misunderstanding something, or "letf" is failing to restore the
"PLACEs" to their original value, on exit from the "letf".

cygwin problems

I am using xemacs-21.4.3 on cygwin. Everything that uses subprocesses
seems to be broken. I always get a message about fork failed, invalid
file descriptor number (or something like that). Any ideas?
