Can't connect via gnuclient
16 years, 9 months
Skip Montanaro
I've noticed that under certain circumstances I can no longer connect to a
running XEmacs instance on my laptop using gnuclient (I think since I traded
in my powerbook for a macbook pro, but I'm not sure). list-processes shows
that I have gnuserv running:
Proc Status Buffer Tty Command
---- ------ ------ --- -------
gnuserv run (none) /dev/ttys003 gnuserv
and the xemacs and gnuclient programs are located in the same place and are
of similar vintage:
% type -a gnuclient
gnuclient is /Users/skip/local/bin/gnuclient
gnuclient is /usr/bin/gnuclient
% type -a xemacs
xemacs is /Users/skip/local/bin/xemacs
% file /Users/skip/local/bin/gnuclient
/Users/skip/local/bin/gnuclient: Mach-O executable i386
% file /Users/skip/local/bin/xemacs
/Users/skip/local/bin/xemacs: Mach-O executable i386
% ls -l /Users/skip/local/bin/xemacs
lrwxrwxr-x 1 skip staff 15 Mar 3 04:17 /Users/skip/local/bin/xemacs -> xemacs-21.5-b28
% ls -lL /Users/skip/local/bin/xemacs
-rwxr-xr-x 1 skip staff 5314052 Mar 3 04:17 /Users/skip/local/bin/xemacs
% ls -l /Users/skip/local/bin/gnuclient
-rwxr-xr-x 1 skip staff 23348 Mar 3 04:17 /Users/skip/local/bin/gnuclient
but I can't connect. Here are a bunch of failed attempts with different
variants:
% gnuclient -nw -q
gnuclient: No such file or directory
gnuclient: unable to connect to local
% gnuclient -q
gnuclient: No such file or directory
gnuclient: unable to connect to local
% gnuclient -nw
gnuclient: No such file or directory
gnuclient: unable to connect to local
% echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0
% DISPLAY= gnuclient -q
gnuclient: No such file or directory
gnuclient: unable to connect to local
% unset DISPLAY
% gnuclient -q
gnuclient: No such file or directory
gnuclient: unable to connect to local
The one thing those failed attempts all have in common is that I first ssh'd
into my desktop machine at work then ssh'd back into my laptop at home. If
I avoid the two ssh commands and just run gnuclient from a Terminal window
on my laptop gnuclient works just fine.
I can clearly find the gnuclient app, so I presume it's gnuclient that can't
find some file or directory in the double ssh case, but which one? Is it
somehow related to the new way the DISPLAY environment variable works on
Leopard's X11? In the no-ssh case my DISPLAY is "/tmp/launch-6mb1rV/:0". I
tried changing it to that in the double-ssh case but that didn't improve
matters.

Using XEmacs Packaging system
16 years, 9 months
Paul Csanyi
Hello!
I installed XEmacs version 21.4.19; November 2006
on Debian GNU/Linux Etch.
I am using XEmacs packaging system to install packages,
like xwem, etc.
When I use this method I get error message:
Searching for program: No such file or directory, nslookup
Then I must to switch to the XEmacs buffer:
'*ftp anonymous(a)ftp.heanet.ie*'
There is the line:
'ftp> 331 Guest login ok, type your name as password.
ftp>'
Here I must to use the fpt 'user' command to login as
anonymous user with my e-mail address.
Then if I do:
Tools / Packages / List and Install
finally get the list of installable packages.
I try to search Google for the solution for this;
I try to install exim4 on my Debian Etch system thinking
that that it maybe automate this anonymous logging, but
don't.
How to set up my Debian system to solve this problem?

Ah, okay, just saw that in the Recent Messages:
Process error: Running ShellExecute, "Den angivne fil blev ikke fundet.", "open", "http://xemacs.org/"
That’s “The specified file could not be found”, right?

Odd.
I see weirdness with ShellExecute and Firefox on a fairly regular basis,
personally; I have a VMWare where Start -> Run http://www.google.com/ -> OK
opens the window, concurrently giving me an error message.
Can you try some of the integer values for SHOWFLAG in
#'mswindows-shell-execute, to see if they make a difference?
Does (mswindows-shell-execute "open" "www.xemacs.org") behave differently?
It doesn’t for me, but start http://www.xemacs.org/ and start www.xemacs.org
from the command line do, so it might be worth tring. The usage string for
START mentions ASSOC and FTYPE, but they don’t seem to have anything to do
with URLs.

[Bug: 21.5-b28] itimer freezes vm
16 years, 9 months
Giacomo Boffi
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
when i use vm (the mail agent) xemacs freezes very often, usually with
no arm and even unfreezes without manual intervention, if i go, e.g.,
to the coffe machine and back...
if i hit C-g to unfreeze xemacs, most of the typeahead is inserted in
the current buffer, and jn the minibuffer flashes the warning
itimer "vm-flush" quit
aside from the bug report, is it possible to put in place an ad
interim workaround?
tia, ciao

XEmacs 21.5.28 hung on attempt to revert buffer

How did you invoke `revert-buffer'? Through a menu as the backtrace
would tend to suggest?
ISTR work on this dialog breakage has been done since "fuki" was
released, but I don't see it in the ChangeLogs, so maybe not.

[Bug: 21.5-b28] browse-url fails to start default browser on MSWin
16 years, 9 months
Anders J. Munch
Dear Bug Team!
browse-url fails to start the default windows browser in 21.5b28.
M-x browse-url RET http://xemacs.org/ RET works as expected
in 21.4p19, launching an external browser, but not in 21.5b28.
regards, Anders

Warning:
Defaulting to the GNU Emacs-derived `sendmail.el' mail client. This facility,
while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to get
better in the medium term. We include it so that bug reports work without
packages; we suggest that you choose and/or install one of the other mail
clients from packages if you're doing something other than M-x
report-xemacs-bug , or even if you are reporting bugs regularly.
To choose a package from those installed, click on "Options" ->
"Internet" -> "Compose Mail With ..." and decide on one from the
list. Gnus and VM are full-featured and have active user communities.
To disable this warning and stick with the old behavior, you can explicitly
initialize `mail-user-agent' to 'sendmail-user-agent .

Warning:
Defaulting to the GNU Emacs-derived `sendmail.el' mail client. This
facility,
while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to get
better in the medium term.
