Hi,
When I start VM with a toolbar on the left (and BBDB buffer),
setup aborts with error:
invalid operation: "No other window to side of this one"
and frame set up is not as expected + cursor is in minibuffer.
Below are C and lisp backtraces for 21.5.19, vm 1.17
(obtained under solaris 5.8, sparc architecture)

It seems this problem has been around for some time.
This is the same problem as in:

My question is: am I on the right track?
1) this does not happen in 21.5.9, happens since 21.5.10,
which corresponds to the "window configuration rewrite" change.
This is also the conclusion in the thread in c.e.x.
2) My opinion is that the problem comes from the difference between
expected behavior and implemented behavior for change_window_height
(AKA enlarge_window in lisp).
(hum, I guess that's a general enough definition
to suit a lot of bugs, ha!....)
change_window_height does:
- change height of a window in a vchild list
- OR change width of a window in a hchild list
But restore-saved-window-parameters (in window-xemacs.el)
expects it to:
- change height of a window, independent of the structure of
the window tree (whether hchild list or vchild list).
"No other window to side of this one" happens
when trying to change width of a vchild list of windows.
The job of changing width(resp. height)
of a window in a vchild(resp. hchild) list is done,
among other things,
by set_window_pixwidth (resp. set_window_pixheight).
3) my proposition: not yet a complete fix.
I suggest the following fix,
which works for me (with VM and toolbar and BBDB),

I guess we need the symetric case
(!widthflag and no vchild => call set_window_pixheight)
and the code I show is not too pretty,
I am posting this in case somebody can spot whether
this is completely off track or not, whether this
fix is too narrow-sighted:
it could be that window-configuration structure
should have at least one hchild list __and__ one
vchild list.
In which case I got the wrong fix.

[Bug: 21.4.15] xemacs vm character encoding PPS

PPS: I have realized that the special characters u-umlaut etc are encoded in a
file with two bytes, i.e. a file with four special characters and a newline is
9 bytes long. I think this indiates that files are saved not with the latin1
encoding but maybe with unicode or something, I don't know. I guess, a2ps and
also the mail reader interpret the characters with latin1 instead of unicode
(or something). Could this explain why I get the strange characters. I don't
know yet how to change the file encoding under xemacs in order to test this
hypothesis.

prog-modes package includes cl-indent.el.
Slime does not appear to be available as an XEmacs package yet?

Installing These:

1) Download the packages that you want to install from:
/ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/
2) Unpack them to: [1]
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/
3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):

1) Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases
2) Tools -> Packages -> List and Install
3) Select the packages you wish to install (there are brief
instructions at the bottom of the packages buffer).
4) Packages -> Install/Remove Selected
5) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.1.14):

I just noticed that the character encoding also doesn't work for a2ps. So
there seems to be something more fundamental wrong. I will try to get a2ps
working now, and I hope that vm will work then as well.

First of all thousand thanks for taking care of this great program. I use it
a lot and love it.
I use xemacs in the Fedora 3 distribution. I use vm for e-mail (vm-mail for
sending e-mail). Now I send an e-mail with special characters in it, like the
following:

Currently we have a bunch of rarely-used mailing lists and aliases,
and I'd like to rationalize the situation for several reasons, one of
which is to reduce spam.
What I propose to do is
1. alias the addresses for crashes, xemacs-mule, xemacs-winnt to
xemacs-beta, including
a. rewrite that address in-place (if possible) to xemacs-beta
b. leave the old archives in place (and eventually remove the spam
that flooded in the back door)
2. change the informal charter for xemacs-beta to allow, but strongly
discourage (at least at first), discussion in non-English
languages (xemacs-mule allows any language, but that facility is
extremely rarely used; I don't think this will be a problem)
3. alias the address for xemacs-beta-ja to xemacs-users-ja
4. invite users with other language needs to request
xemacs-users-LANG lists, or to move existing lists to XEmacs.org
(we currently have Russian and Japanese)
5. after about six months for the rarely used lists, and a year for
xemacs-winnt, remove the obsolete aliases.
6. get rid of the xemacs-news gateway to c.e.x
