Dear Bug Team!
In order to verify something about the default appearance of XEmacs, I
started up "xemacs -vanilla", looked at the detail of interest, then
clicked on the "X" box in the corner to close it. XEmacs said:

I had intended to build without Motif, but I forgot to tell XIM not to
use it. :-( This is OpenMotif, RedHat package openmotif-2.2.2-14.
Note that frame #4 should actually have fingered input-method-motif.c,
line 134. However, the function call on that line has one argument
FRAME_X_TEXT_WIDGET (f), and that's where the file and line number come
from. Is that our fault, or is binutils/gcc/gdb insane?
Also, the "Installed Modules" information below is wrong. I have the
LDAP and PostgreSQL modules installed.

define-key-after supported

Hello
I try to use package written for GNU emacs and which uses the
define-key-after function. I have looked up in xemacs-packages and
for example in haskell-mode/haskell-doc.el this function is used. In
general it seems not, since it did not work the gnu package did not
work for me.
So couldn't this function be included in fsf-compat?

FWIW, this is still repeatable in 21.5-b16.

[Bug: 21.4.14] cc-mode performance problem

Dear Bug Team!
Using cc-mode 5.28 as delivered in the XEmacs Package v1.33 the performance
is fine. Upgrading to the latest cc-mode version as delivered in XEmacs
Package v1.40 (cc-mode 5.30) causes a huuuge decrease in scrolling
performance, for example. XEmacs becomes remarkably unresponsive. Simply
doing PgUp or PdDn has appx a 1.5 to 2 second delay. All other packages,
including font-lock (in case that is relevant), are at the latest revisions.
Only cc-mode displays this problem and only in releases greater than 5.28.

After finding out about package-get-require-signed-base-updates by
checking the lisp sources (are normal humans supposed to be able to do
that?) I've eventually been able to update the list file, select the
packages and download them, overriding efs which can't handle rh9's
nslookup.
Then every package downloaded gives an error:

Dear Bug Team!
Got bored with "life after XEmacs", so I built a few XEmacsen for old
times sake.
Non-Mule 21.5 doesn't get through the test-suite. It dies in
c-tests. Whoever ends up doing the beta releases, please do yourself
a favour and _don't_ release until this has been fixed. (not that my
opinion counts for anything anymore)

In 21.4.14, configure.in defines
xe_cppflags='$CPPFLAGS $c_switch_site $c_switch_machine $c_switch_system $c_switch_x_site $X_CFLAGS'
...
ac_cpp='$CPP '"$xe_cppflags"
...
CPP=`eval "echo $CPP $CPPFLAGS"`
which means that anything using $ac_cpp will see CPPFLAGS twice. This
is causing me grief, because of a -DTEXT_DOMAIN="" that is in the
CPPFLAGS that's defined by the workspace that I'm building XEmacs
in.[1]
XEmacs doesn't use TEXT_DOMAIN, so I think I can work around this via
some Companion CD makefile hackery. But this does seem like a bit of
ugliness in configure.in. Would it be possible to take out the CPP=
line and then use $ac_cpp instead of $CPP?

[1] configure executes statements that look like
...gcc -E -DTEXT_DOMAIN= ... -DTEXT_DOMAIN="" ...
and gcc complains with
*Initialization*:1: warning: `TEXT_DOMAIN' redefined
*Initialization*:1: warning: this is the location of the previous definition
and "configure" takes this to mean that the command failed.

module-load-directory wrong for run-in-place

Steve identified a problem quite awhile ago that I'm just now
diagnosing. To reproduce it, configure XEmacs 21.5 to install in a
location where you have an existing installation. Remove
modules/auto-autoloads.el* (You should do this anyway, since I just
checked in a patch that changes the structure of that file somewhat.)
Now when you build, you'll see a message indicating that XEmacs loaded
modules/auto-autoloads.elc *from the installed XEmacs*.
The source of this problem appears to be that run-in-place XEmacs gets
the wrong value for module-directory, which then poisons
module-load-path. When paths-find-module-directory (setup-paths.el) is
called, it calls paths-find-architecture-directory (find-paths.el) to do
the work. I'll paste that function in here to make the following
discussion easier.

When the build-time problem occurs, roots is a list of two elements: the
build root first, and the install root second; base is "modules". The
problem is that the first clause in the "or" above succeeds for the
install directory, when what we really wanted was for the second clause
to succeed for the build directory. For installed XEmacs, what we got
is exactly right.
It seems to me that, for run-in-place, we want to set emacs-roots to a
list containing only the build root (set startup-setup-paths, in
setup-paths.el). This would fix my problem and not mess up installed
XEmacs. Is there an easy way to accomplish that?
