Dear Bug Team!
Bug has come in between 21.4.10 (I have this version installed on
my iBook) and 21.4.12. I get the warning "Error caught in
`font-lock-idle-prehook`: (wrong-type-argument characterp nil) when
editing java code and typing an import line.

Hi,
I have observed this behavior since the early 21.5 version days, but I
always thought it would go away. Apparently not.
When you load an UTF-8 file in xemacs, some characters do not get
displayed - instead, a GETA MARK (U+3013) is displayed (looks like this
〓). This is generally ok for display purposes, but the problem is that
when I save that file, all the characters that cannot be displayed get
replaced by the GETA MARK, which is unacceptable.
To reproduce this problem, one can use the UCA rules file, located at
http://oss.software.ibm.com/cvs/icu/~checkout~/icu/source/data/unidata/UC...
Load that file in xemacs and save it under a different name. A
significant number of code points will go to U+3013.
This file has a nice selection of Unicode characters, so the problem
should be easily reproduced. The first code point that gets smashed is
COMBINING GRAPHEME JOINER (U+034F). There is a number of code points
that cause a ~ to be displayed, like some Tibetan characters. These get
preserved properly.
I'm building on Win2K, no special configuration changes. My config.inc
is attached.

Note that just getting a decent MULE version for Win32 would expand your
potential user base immensly. AFAIK, it would cover most usual coding
systems, and would have a "decent" UTF-8 support as well. But as long as the
21.5 branch doesn't have a Win32 binary test program, I'm unable to
contribute. I don't have the opportunity to build and develop - I could use
and thus test, but I'm denied that opportunity.

"Real Life" effectively prevents me from contributing that way. Most users
probably don't even have the coding skills necessary.
Again, I'm greatful for your efforts, and would like to be able to contribute
somehow. However, as tings stand now, I might have to move to GNU Emacs on
Win32 just to get my Gnus to show encoded messages better.

Yes. That buffer is a bit like a shell or console for Emacs, and
M-p isn't currently bound to anything, so it would make sense to
have it do a similar thing to M-p in shell mode.

I have been tracking XEmacs for this purpose on Win32 for quite some time.
Actually, I would even settle for a decent subset of Unicode. Unfortunately
Win32 Unicode editing is simply not supported in XEmacs stable, and the 21.5
branch does not produce binaries - being beta.
As Stephen put it:

As it looks right now, simple unicode editing should be done with GNU Emacs,
and to get good unicode support, you have to use (g)vim. It works well even
on Win32, but using it is a pain for someone who has emacsen in their nervous
system.
I'm sorry Stephen, but the amount of UTF-8 encoded messages in newsgroups and
mail is going up all the time. Win32 XEmacs stable has problems even with
ISO-8859-15, not to mention UTF-8. We need a release of 21.5 to get Mule
support on Win32. Even then, any advanced unicode usage would be beyond
XEmacs.
As I have noted earlier, I can't build 21.5 myself, but I could provide test
results if a (net)installer would be provided. I've tried out some of the
unofficial 21.5 builds that have been available, but submitting bugs on old
versions is useless.
I honestly find it fairly tragic that XEmacs running on a Unicode-native OS
fails to provide any decent support for Unicode. As it stands, I can't
recommend XEmacs on Win32. And as I tend to support cross-platform
applications, that means I can't recommend XEmacs on any platform.
I wish this would change. But I don't see that on the horizon.

Thanks for the report. I agree, this is a bug; probably redisplay
fails to update the horizontal pixel position for the image width.

3) Re-start XEmacs.

edebug still breaks pre,post-command-hook in XEmacs 21.4

Hi,
I am annoyed by edebug which still breaks pre,post-command-hook
in XEmacs 21.4 because the variable-binding-locus function is
absent. Normally, those hooks contain paren-nuke-extent and
paren-highlight in my environment because I am using paren.el by
the following:
(paren-set-mode 3 'quiet)
Once I used edebug, it sometimes breaks those hooks and paren
highlights will never disappear. For instance, it is easy to
reproduce it if you are using Gnus:
1. Put the following function in the *scratch* buffer and perform
``M-x edebug-defun'' on the hello-world function.

(let ((current (current-buffer))
(buffer (get-buffer-create "*testing*")))
(set-buffer buffer)
(message "Hello World")
(set-buffer current)))
2. Enter the Gnus summary buffer and type ``M-x hello-world''.
3. Type SPC several times until it reaches the "Hello World" line.
4. Quit the edebug using the q key.
The obstacle arose because pre-command-hook is made buffer-local
in the Gnus summary buffer. That local value is saved when
edebug starts, and then, restored at the *scratch* buffer.
Since the variable-binding-locus function is used for saving
pre-command-hook and post-command-hook only, cannot it be
replaced with `(current-buffer)' if it is not available? Here
is a patch which helps all the released XEmacsen:

You are right. Judging by the number of places you've corrected, this
must be a very common misunderstanding. I remember that I
misunderstood ＠var{} as well, until I encountered the UPPERCASE
convention for specifying text that will be substituted with the
actual contents (i.e. "variable" text).
This line illustrates both the correct and the incorrect usage of
＠var:

> -Decode a string ＠var{str} according to ＠var{ldap-coding-system}.

In fact, it would be even better to get rid of the "string STR"
phrase, and write the more natural:

...but that's a stylistic change that this patch doesn't (and
shouldn't) make.
