Dear Bug Team!
Xemacs works perfectly on my host computer without any problem. But
when I try to open xemacs through a remote system, I get the following
error message:

Dear Bug Team!
This is the second bug report on the same assertion error.
The first time this bug was reported was for xemacs-21.1 under the
subject line above, and the reply from Stephen Turnbull was that I was
SOL, and should upgrade to 21.4.
I have since upgraded to 21.4.8, where it happened again.
This is using the RedHat compiled version within xemacs-21.4.8-13.i386.rpm
I was scrolling down using <down-arrow> in a gnus *Article* window,
when I hit the bottom, the following happened:

1. I want to use a different icon for xemacs, namely etc/xemacs-icon3.xpm. What do I need to specify in the -iconname command line switch? Giving it the file name of the icon does not work.
2. In KDE, I start xemacs by kstart --maximize so it should appear maximized. The moment the window appears, it becomes maximized, but then xemacs sets itself up and resizes the window to its default size of 80x40 characters. How can I prevent this so the window remains maximized?

Hi Y'll,
Complete configuration probably too complex to post here,
but available upon request:
NetBSD 1.6, gcc 2.95.3, i386, XFree 4.2.xx
* Using the customize buffers (only!), I change some variables. It
really does not matter which, or too complicated to tell. I save
init.el and custom.el, exit and re-start xemacs.
When it re-starts the faces will all be screwed up, colors will be
all wrong, etc. Sometimes the cure is to try again. Sometimes it
is to revert to a different version of custom.el (simpler or more
complex), and sometimes it is to exit the Xserver and start all
over again.
* Most of the time, when this happens, xemacs puts Xserver event
errors (bad font map, or bad colors) on stderr. Sometimes it just
says ``xemacs: NL NL NL NL NL''.
* Some events will trigger beeps (or even without beeps). however,
the 'backspace deletes selection' feature reverts behavior to
'backspace deletes one char'.
A good way to trigger this behavior:
o Set blink rate to 0.1
o Set paren matching blink count to 10000
o Put the point to the right of a closing paren
What you will see is the parens blinking erratically, even after
the point moved, and then 'backspace deletes selection' reverts to
the default behavior. The control variable is still at the correct
value. Just the behavior changes unannouncingly.
* While idle, the echo area (minibuffer?) will display an error
message about some variable definition being nil and invalid
argument. For example:
``number-char-or-mark-p nil - Invalid arg''
* Security Problem with backup files;
There is a feature where files in /a (say /a/b/c/d.e) can be saved
in /x/a!b!c!d.e
The problem is that /x will share backup files for arbitrary
collection of files, (not necessarily by the same user), and the
permissions on /x and files created in /x are not restrictive.
This is not the case with auto-save which applies 700 permissions
to files in the directory.
* I would much rather see /x/a/b/c/d.e, which is much more easily
controlled on those operating systems that allow subdirectories :-)
* In the customizing frames, it is hard to guess (for the slow ones,
like me) which option goes with which variables.
Sometimes the variable names can reveal it, but these are not
always visible, nor revealing.
* How does one cause the GUI to go GDK/GTK ? I see many lisp files
to do with it, but where is the switch?
You see, I am not in enough trouble already :-)
* How does one convince xemacs to look in ~/.xemacs for `required
packages? For example, I added the ctypes package.
I finally got it to be called, but it could not be found until I
put it (ctypes.el) in /usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.5.8/lisp/ctypes.el
Generally, it is an improvement over XEmacs 20.4, the last version
(until now) where I managed to get highlight cut to work.
I wish I could submit patches rather than complaints, but my lisp skills
are non-existing. I could post my combined configuration which looks
good to my aging eyes.

Hello there,
I installed (recent) Red Hat linux distribution in my computer. I am big
fan of xemacs. When I work on my computer xemacs works without any
problem. But when I connect to my computer through a remote computer and
start xemacs I get the bunch of error messages (see the attached text
file) and finally with the message [1]+ Segmentation fault xemacs. Xemacs
does not even generate any core file. Please let me know where the
problem is. Xemacs worked on remote systems in the first two weeks
without any problem.

i just noticed this so i am not sure how long it has been happening
the problem is png.h is not buing detected on my FreeBSD box
i have png-1.2.4 installed but it looks like the header file gets put
in a sub directory in my include directory.

If I were you I'd worry more about `Local Variables:'.
Emacs-21.1 had many security holes there and although we have fixed
a few since (tho not in 21.2 and probably not in 21.3 either), I'm sure
there are many more left, all pretty easy to exploit (as long as you can
get someone to open the file you wrote).

Dear Bug Team!
I believe I have found a bug in the minibuffer completion functions
where minibuffer-complete will crash because of a read-before-bind
error wrt the variable last-exact-completion.
I stumbled upon this bug through using ILISP. Here's what I sent the
ilisp maintainers. Possibly it was wrong to do so, but the crash
impairs the function of their package.
Here's the bug, with backtrace adn what I hope is a fix:
I am not sure that this is properly your purview, so I have also
submitted this as an xemacs bug. The bug appears in the use of
minibuffer completion functions.
I BELIEVE that ilisp-cmp has a bug in ilisp-read-symbol, particularly
in the way it uses the minibuffer. I was finding that this crashed in
my copy of ilisp (ilisp-cmp.el,v 1.4) on Xemacs 21.1.14, linux.
When using meta-dot to find a function definition, I was getting
completion crashes with the error that LAST-EXACT-COMPLETION was
unbound.
That variable is defined in minibuf.el (no version number available in
my copy :-<), but not bound.
When one calls SOME minibuffer completion function, it seems to behave in
a well-balanced way: the function first binds last-exact-completion
to nil, then starts functioning.
However, if one calls minibuffer-complete, as completer-complete in
ilisp-read-symbol does, last-exact-completion is not bound.
The head of minibuffer-do-completion has the following in it:
