xemacs coredump in M-x eval-print-last-sexp

Xeamcs 21.4.8 crashes while doing M-x eval-print-last-sexp
on a form in the *scratch* buffer. This is repeatable in
a fresh emacs.
To repeat:
1. Enter the following form in the *scratch* buffer:
(let (n 3) (print n))
2. Place cursor after the final close-paren
3. Type M-x eval-print-last-sexp
The output of M-x describe-distribution, the lisp backtrace, and
the C backtrace from the core file follow.
eval-print-last-sexp has not been modified from the standard distribution:
`eval-print-last-sexp' is an interactive compiled Lisp function

Wonder if the aliases wouldn't be needed if
ps-mule-font-info-database-bdf in ps-mule.el was changed to match the
real coding-system names in XEmacs?

Does anyone know why custom-theme-set-variables (custom-set-variables)
eval's its argument if now is t or if it has a default value.
"The arguments should be a list where each entry has the form:
(SYMBOL VALUE [NOW [REQUEST [COMMENT]]])
The unevaluated VALUE is stored as the saved value for SYMBOL.
If NOW is present and non-nil, VALUE is also evaluated and bound as
the default value for the SYMBOL."
I don't see how this can possibly be what you want. For instance:
(custom-set-variables '(jde-global-classpath ("one" "two")))
fails because ("one" "two") is evalled. Indeed aren't the docs wrong as
well - &rest args automatically turns the arguments into a list. So
shouldn't it actually say "each argument has the form:"
The FSF code is similarly (IMO) broken.
Just trying to understand how I must set variables of this tye.

It looks like cc-mode doesn't like JavaScript's prototype

i'm not objecting to packagization as such. what i'm objecting to is the
general consensus that you should move as much as possible into packages,
even libraries such as xemacs-base. vm, w3, of course they are packages;
but trying to maintain xemacs-base, and even move more stuff like the
gutter, into the packages is just a huge time sink with little end-user
gain. in fact i'd assert it's end-user *loss* because real packages cannot
depend on having this functionality available and thus end up in practice
duplicating the routines themselves and/or investing useless work into
dealing with the possibility of xemacs-base being missing.
go look at vm and see just how much basic stuff is duplicated. same with w3
and many others -- and all done in a different fashion. what *would* be
useful is to extend my compat package so this stuff can be written *once*,
work for all emacsen, and be done with it.

please don't do any major shuffling until we have a proper infrastructure
for supporting (a) moving of stuff between core and packages, (b) different
versions of stuff in the packages for different XEmacs versions.
while it may be theoretically nice to put lots of stuff in packages, it
introduces various major problems:
(1) it is a lot of work to move stuff around, and imho not worth it because
it doesn't get us any functionality improvements, and we have limited
resources.
(2) it tends to introduce *more* dependencies between core and packages, and
tends to make core functionality that should be internal become external,
because we have no clearly defined way *at all* to indicate which functions
in e.g. files.el are private and which ones aren't. as you move from core C
code, to core Lisp code, to semi-core packages, to standard packages, to
other random packages, the quality of coding goes steadily down, and thus
package writers can rarely be trusted to have any good theoretical
understanding of maintainining clear separation between different layers,
much less the ability or desire to actually implement it, particularly given
the utter lack of clear separation just mentioned.
(3) as a result of (2), it impedes core development.
i want xemacs-base, etc. in core because in practice it's very closely
linked and doesn't contain end-user functionality that would benefit from
more frequent releases. having this stuff separate is a *major* practical
headache and has led to a lot of teeth-gnashing and time-wasting on my part.
in conclusion, this separation is a nice idea but not we've really put the
cart before the horse.
who out there has the time to rearrange the two?
i'll be out of touch for a few days.
as for gcpro, michael is right, always err on the side of more gcpro's.
there's nothing wrong with a limited number of functions gcpro'ing their own
arguments if this is documented and increases maintainability.

Follow-up to bug report on Customize menu hang

I have a few additional comments on the bug report I submitted on
Tuesday about XEmacs hanging when trying to access the customize
menus.
1) The problem can be reproduced with -vanilla.
2) The hang occurs with the last message "Loading build"
3) I'd be curious to know if any other Cygwin users can demonstrate
the problem.
4) This would be minor with easy workarounds except that there is a
serious side effect. Once XEmacs is hung the only way to kill it
is with the Windows Task Manager. After killing XEmacs with the
pulldown menus still displayed, menus are displayed incorrectly in
XEmacs when it is restarted and in other applications as well. The
menu background is sometimes black except right around the text and
sometimes it is transparent. The only way I have been able to
clear up the problem is to restart the system.
5) There is no hang if customize is invoked as a command instead of
from the menu.
6) The hang can be prevented if build is loaded first.
I'm trying to track this one down but I am at a loss on how to
proceed. My luck with running the Cygwin version of gdb on XEmacs has
been limited. In any case the system is nearly locked up once XEmacs
hangs. XEmacs ignores signals once it is hung.
