question on make-variable-buffer-local 22 years, 9 months

I've noticed an odd behavior in edebug which I'm attempting to fix. I'm running XEmacs 21.1 (patch 14) with all lisp packages up-to-date with the CVS repository (built locally). If I bring up XEmacs, and in the *scratch* buffer, do `M-x edebug-eval-top-level-form RET', I get the expected message: End of stream: #<buffer "*scratch*"> After this I load a valid file of Elisp code and do `M-x edebug-eval-top-level-form RET' again, I get Symbol's value as variable is void: edebug-form-data No subsequent attempts to use edebug meet with any success. I noticed that in edebug.el, the variable `edebug-form-data' is defconst'ed *before* it is set buffer-local. (make-variable-buffer-local 'edebug-form-data) (defconst edebug-form-data nil) Exchanging the order of these lines, so that it is defconst'ed first and then set buffer-local, seems to fix the problem. But I don't really understand why, and before I submit a patch I'd like to understand what's going on here. Any clues?

Errors in eldap.c? 22 years, 9 months

I'm building XEmacs 21.4.3 from source (xemacs-21.4.3.tar.gz) on a Mandrake 7.2-ish system and have run into the following compilation errors in eldap.c. A quick search of google and xemacs.org didn't turn up anything relevant. Greetings, Attempts to update packages through the "Tools->Packages->Update Installed Packages" menu fail with the error message: "Button descriptor is too small: ["Yes" (dialog-box-finish t)] This is because yes-or-no-p-dialog-box calls make-dialog-box with an array :buttons whose buttons are vectors with only two elements. The documentation for the dialog box format clearly states that: * The rest of the elements are descriptions of the dialog box's buttons. Each one is a vector of three elements: - The first element is the text of the button. - The second element is the "callback". - The third element is `t' or `nil', whether this button is selectable. Procedure popup-builtin-question-dialog (from dialog-gtk.el) verifies that each button has length at least 3, and complains if it is not the case. One solution (which I believe correct, but as it is the first time I'm making any change to Xemacs I'll let others decide whether or not that's true) is to add a third element "t" to each button. 21.4.3 crash with nextaw 22 years, 9 months

Hi, today I thought I give the new xemacs a try and encountered an crash when compiling against nextaw. I guess it has something to do with the widgets (e.g. progress...), because I recompiled with --with-widgets=none and no crash happens. I encountered the above crash when starting xemacs. So I did a xemacs -vanilla followed by a M-x font-lock-mode which crashed. Here are my configure options: ./configure \ --with-athena=next \ --with-menubars=lucid \ --with-scrollbars=athena \ --with-dialogs=athena \ --with-widgets=no \ --with-sound=native \ --mail-locking=dot \ --with-mule \ --with-xfs \ --error-checking=none Are nextaw+widgets unsupported? If you need a backtrace, simply ask ;) And BTW, is there a difference between the downloadable 21.4.3 source-tar-ball and the cvs tag release-21-4 ? Marcus -- Yes, God had a deadline. 21.4.3: Another customize menu freeze 22 years, 9 months

This is XEmacs 21.4 (patch 3) "Academic Rigor" [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32). I just got a customize menu freeze (xemacs completely hung) by choosing Customize->Emacs->Programming->Languages->Sgml As soon as xemacs starts to build the Sgml menu, the sgml package prompts for your email address in the minibuffer. At this point, xemacs is completely frozen, and has to be manually killed. I've included a screenshot. No idea if this is win32 only, or not. -Jim Potts
