BUG: (find-file FILE CODESYS) doesn't set buffer-file-coding-system for new files

(find-file FILE CODESYS) doesn't set `buffer-file-coding-system' if
FILE is a newly created file. I.e.
C-u C-x C-f bar RET euc-jp RET
will not set `buffer-file-coding-system' to EUC-JP if "bar" is a file
which doesn't exist yet but is newly created. See the following example:

mfabian＠gregory:~/xemacs-bug$ touch foo
mfabian＠gregory:~/xemacs-bug$ ls
foo
mfabian＠gregory:~/xemacs-bug$ xemacs -q -vanilla -batch --eval "(progn (find-file \"foo\" 'euc-jp) (message \"%s\" buffer-file-coding-system))"
#<coding_system euc-jp-unix>

I.e. when the existing (but empty) file "foo" was visited,
buffer-file-coding-system did get set, but when the not yet existing
file "bar" was visited, buffer-file-coding-system did not get set.
I did the above test in the following locale:

Hi,
I found the same problem and did a major work around in re-dumping XEmacs.
I also had to modify a file which gives or returns the XEmacs root dir to
point to the install folder. I have mentioned this the Stephen Turnbull and
I guess you are another person finding this problem. This however does not
happen in Emacs. I plan to do some study and I have requested Stephen to
indicate who the DUMP related expert is (Like Mr.Preprocessor - I like it :
-) ).

Hi Stephen,
I did achieve the final build with the install paths!! I modified the make
file and dump-paths.el to get it going.
Infact you can achieve this by just modifying dump-paths.el. I hard coded
the value for "roots".
Steps I took:
1. Built XEmacs the regular striaght forward way.
2. Modified the xemacs.mak ( attached )
3. Created a Folder where I XEmacs install directory is pointing ( as per
config.inc ).
4. Modified dump-paths.el by hard coding the variable "roots" ( around line
37 ) and removed dump-paths.elc.
5. Copied the "lisp" folder from build location i.e., where I am building
from to the abouve folder. This
is the location where the final lisp files will be installed.
6. Deleted the xemacs.exe which was build by step 1.
7. Did a make.
8. make install.
A crude way to make the elegant XEmacs behave the way I expected!! I am
sure there are more elegant ways
which I will explore. I am learning the makefiles in the process!!

`./configure --help' mentions the option `--moduledir':

The function `find-function' fails to find functions which have been
dumped into the executable:
mfabian＠blackwell:~$ xemacs -q -vanilla -batch --eval "(find-function 'fill-paragraph)"
The library "/usr/src/packages/BUILD/xemacs-21.4.4/lisp/fill" is not in the path.
xemacs exiting

it looks like during dumping, the path to these functions in the
directory where XEmacs has been build has been written into the
executable:
mfabian＠blackwell:~$ strings /usr/X11R6/bin/xemacs | grep BUILD | grep fill
/usr/src/packages/BUILD/xemacs-21.4.4/lisp/fill.elc
mfabian＠blackwell:~$
When this directory is removed later, XEmacs still searches there and
not in the directory where the files have been
installed. `find-function' works fine for all functions which have not
been dumped, it fails only for the ones dumped into the executable.
As a workaround I tried to dump XEmacs again at the final location:

This is usually because some files were preloaded by loaddefs.el or
site-load.el, but were not passed to make-docfile by Makefile.

Dumping under the name xemacs
This does indeed remove the above problem, `find-function' now
finds dumped functions like `fill-paragraph' as well. But as can
be seen above, there were warnings about lost doc-strings during
my try to dump again and indeed,
`M-x describe-function <function>'
doesn't show the doc-string of the functions mentioned in
the above warnings any more. I.e. I certainly did something
wrong when trying to dump XEmacs again.
Probably dumping XEmacs again isn't the right strategy to remove
the hard coded paths to the original source directory anyway.
At best this is a silly workaround. Probably I am doing something
seriously wrong.
Do you have any idea how to enable `find-function' to still find
dumped functions like `fill-paragraph' even if the directory where
XEmacs has been built is removed? There must be a `correct' way
to do this.

Thanks. Unfortunately I had some problems with compiling it under Sun SPARC
Solaris 2.8.
- At first it couldn't compile b/c of an error in window.c line 2692. I
"patched" it by replacing .. && (p-> ...) with && !NILP (p-> ...)
- After that it compiles with gcc-2.95.3 but gives another (not easy to
understand for me) error with gcc-3.0.1.
The complete script of my work is attached.

CVS access via SSH

I have the CVS repository online now.
Due to local firewall restrictions, access has to be via SSH. If you
had commit access on the old cvs.xemacs.org, I should have a valid
public key for you already. Write accesses should be the same as on
the old host. Host is tanko.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp [130.158.99.155]. Root
is /usr/CVSroot. Access cvs via the ext method in the usual way:
CVS_RSH=`which ssh` cvs -d :ext:xemacs＠tanko.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp:/usr/CVSroot
This is SSH 1. It's not a top-of-the-line box, but should serve for
the moment. This uses the SSH feature of restricting access to a
particular application, namely "cvs server" for /usr/CVSroot. Lightly
tested, it seems to work.
I have tagged the current state of the trunk of the core as
LAST_DAYS_OF_CAMELOT. Besides having the tarballs from the old host,
we should also be able to replay to current state with that tag.
Anybody with a shared private branch, I suggest doing the same. I
haven't tagged packages yet, will do that tomorrow my time. We should
be extremely careful with package commits anyway, since Steve Youngs
is out of action.
Plans: I considered changing cvs.xemacs.org to point to this box, but it
doesn't seem worthwhile given that I expect to have the repository
moved shortly, and given DNS propagation lags.
The next steps are to set up an rsync (or similar) mirror, at
SunSITE.dk or Tux.ORG, preferably both, open anonymous pserver access,
then move the primary to one of those.

How do you modify PATH on Windows XEmacs 21.4.3

I'm trying to add an entry to the PATH environment variable in my
Windows (native) XEmacs 21.4.3. I use (putenv "PATH" mypath) but
according to the docs, this only affects subprocesses. How can I modify
an environment variable that XEmacs itself is using (in the process from
which it was started). Is there a function for this?

Dear Bug Team!
When I open eshell, everything works fine. I can type "bzip2 --help"
and I get the help as desired. When I open a dired buffer after that -
but the sequence is not important; it could be the other way round - I
cannot type "bzip2 --help" anymore - in fact I can, but there is no
output. It seems that NO program is being run any more although M-x
shell-command and dired are working.
ls works in eshell, of course - but that's because it's coded in
elisp. Oh, eshell begins - or rather: executing shell commands in eshell -
to work again after I've killed ALL dired-buffers.
Has anyone got a clue for me what might be going on here?
Btw, I'm using bash as my shell, but it has nothing dto do with that,
since I've tested it with cmd.exe, too.
