patch for syntax.c, latest cvs 25 years, 3 months

xemacs source code HOWTO ? 25 years, 3 months

hi, a month ago i wanted to get into XEmacs' source code, to see if i could, if ever the oportunity showed up, participate in improving/debugging/testing xemacs . i wanted to add some lisp structures and builtin functions that might be appreciated, if not for all, at least for some. and so i got into the source code, and, as i haven't done C for quite a while, and Java brainwashed me quite well, i got very confused as to all the precompiler macros and the GC methods, as well as for the mapping between lisp and C objects. i mean, i could not find a place where i could learn how all this fit together, how i should declare new lisp structures, how and when to use GC related functions, and how to organize the code i would add. is there such a HOWTO, to introduce new programers, or did everyone that ever participated to emacs/xemacs just read the code and understood the whole project guidelines in a second and started coding the minute after ? hope this question is interresting. -- # Stef Epardaud, # There is no limit to the power of computing ... # Java Defeater # ... except men maybe ? # Earth # Lunatech Research, # Solar System # soon we will quit researching and start finding...

Subwindow geometry weirdness 25 years, 3 months

I've been trying to catch a picture of this bug for quite a while (well back into the 21.0 series), and now I've got it or perhaps something new that looks a little like it) on film. When VM is setting up its toolbar in the default position on the left side, messages may continue appearing in the area that used to be echo area at the bottom of the toolbar space. They will have a blank area the width of the border between the toolbar and the text windows. However, this behavior goes away once the toolbar is fully in place, so it's hard to grab with XV. The new behavior was elicited by starting XEmacs, selecting Read Mail (VM) from the menu, then I did something with the X window configuration (started the audio CD from Workman, I think it was, which popped that window up over the VM frame). In that frame (and that frame only, other VM frames started later don't show this behavior) the echo area geometry apparently never got updated; as you can see, it is overwriting the bottom button in VM's tool bar. Note how the `e' in messages is partly obliterated by the toolbar/text border. XEmacs 21.2.19 crashes by SIGPIPE in Gnus-v5.6.45(packages) 25 years, 3 months

Recently my XEmacs sometimes crashes by SIGPIPE inside gnus-uu-decode-uu-view. I can't reliably reproduce crashes. I'm not sure when it began to occur. Maybe after I had upgraded my OS from FreeBSD-3.1R to 3.2R, but I'm not sure. There is no core file generated.
