toolbar position vs geometry in ~/.Xdefaults 26 years, 3 months

The frame sizing/resizing code seems to have changed between XEmacs-20.4 and XEmacs-21.0. I want to have my toolbar on the left and size 81x56. In XEmacs-20.4, I could use .Xdefaults> Emacs*EmacsFrame.geometry: 81x56--9--1 .Xdefaults> Emacs.topToolBarHeight: 0 .Xdefaults> Emacs.bottomToolBarHeight: 0 .Xdefaults> Emacs.leftToolBarWidth: 40 .Xdefaults> Emacs.rightToolBarWidth: 0 .emacs> (set-default-toolbar-position 'left) .emacs> ;; must be set in .Xdefaults: .emacs> ;;(set-specifier top-toolbar-height 0) .emacs> ;;(set-specifier bottom-toolbar-height 0) .emacs> ;;(set-specifier left-toolbar-width 40) .emacs> ;;(set-specifier right-toolbar-width 0) In XEmacs-21.0, the same code (the last four lines in .Xdefaults doesn't matter anymore) gives me a XEmacs of size 77x56 which is shifted up. Resizing it to 85x56 finally gives me an XEmacs of size 81x56. Is there a more direct way, e.g., toolbar position by ~/.Xdefaults? Thanks for any hints, - Christoph

XEMACS-20.4/etc/frame-icon/ not in XEmacs-21.0 26 years, 3 months

The xbm files from XEMACS-20.4/etc/frame-icon/ are not distributed with XEmacs-21.0 anymore. Of course: no default XEmacs package uses it. But the point is: my XEmacs package x-symbol http://www.fmi.uni-passau.de/~wedler/x-symbol/ uses some of them. The questions are (1) Were there copyright problems with these files? (2) If not 1, may I distribute some of them with my package? (3) If 2, who is the author/designer of these icons (to be mentioned in the "thanks" section)? Hope not to have bothered you with non-general-interest questions, - Christoph

[Comments] Package installation 26 years, 3 months

Hi, XEmacs-21.0 is really nice! I had some problems with the installation of packages. I must say: if I wouldn't have ticked the thread "Packages-Info ..." by Holger Schauer and Andy Piper, I would have been completely lost... (1) It should be mentioned in the INSTALL file which a. packages are necessary before dumping (some Mule stuff?) b. packages are necessary for using the "update packages" mechanism from the menubar (efs + xemacs-base?) (2) After having installed packages efs + xemacs-base, using Options -> Customize -> Update Packages installs dired, mail-lib and vm!??? Why is that? (3) Using Options -> Customize -> Emacs -> Packages and toggling the various settings is a bit slow. It would be excellent to have something like toggle all / set all. (4) If you do not want that all people update their package from the xemacs ftp site, i.e., not using mirrors, you should advice to add addresses to `package-get-remote'. (5) I don't know whether this *Finder* stuff (C-h p) is still useful. At least it is very confusing to call the corresponding menu entry "Packages" (in Help -> Basics). (6) My menu item Help -> Samples -> Samples enriched is not selectable for the following reason (enriched.el and enriched.doc) are present: `data-directory-list' has value ("/home/clstaff/wedler/xemacs/xemacs-21.0-b51/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/etc/" "/home/clstaff/wedler/xemacs/xemacs-21.0-b51/etc/") i.e., not containing the etc dir for enriched.doc, and `locate-data-file', which is used in the menu entry, only uses those dirs. - Christoph

Upgrading to the newest version didn't fix the crash or the display problem I describe, though on the desktop box, with the old libpng, the sample png that comes with the libpng sources doesn't display right. It's the right size, but all the colors and the image are squashed over to the right hand side. The left 2/3 of the picture are dark grey. With the new library, it displays the same in XEmacs as in xv and display, a yellow background with blue PNG across it diagonally. Could you check out the PngSuite images at http://schaik.com/pngsuite/pngsuite_body.html and tell me which of 'em fails for you? Could either (or both) of you please send me the output of 'ldd xeamcs' and 'xdpyinfo' please? The problem you mention sounds much like the library bug in libpng1.0.1 which doesn't show up in xv or gimp because they handle conversions between colorspaces and depths internally, instead of using the library's functions. Also, Karl, didn't you say that it works fine on your desktop machine, but not on your laptop? Could you please list the differences between them for me?
