Comint/shell: what now? 17 years, 10 months

I'm packing the car for my summer of fun in California. I will not be doing any more on the comint/shell update for a few days, at least. It's up to you to decide now: keep it, or revert? I admit that I'm not getting the feeling of solid stability I had hoped for, but on the other hand, I know of only one unresolved bug: the insert-before-markers bug. It is clear from the comment just before the use of insert-before-markers in comint.el that the upstream author doesn't like using it. It seems to me that a combination of plain insert and set-window-point ought to do the job with less fuss, but I haven't thought it through all the way, either. In any case, the insert-before-markers bug leaves shell mode crippled on XEmacs 21.5. Somebody needs to revert my changes, fix the insert-before-markers bug, or rewrite that part of comint.el to not use insert-before-markers. I'll leave it up to you to decide which action to take. [Bug: 21.4.19] etags man page reports unavailable option -m 17 years, 10 months

Dear Bug Team! The manual page for etags says that the option -m is available as a synonym for the long option --members. This is not the case, however; running etags, one can easily verify this: $ etags -m etags: invalid option -- m Try `etags --help' for a complete list of options. $ etags --members etags: no input files specified. Try `etags --help' for a complete list of options. And when actually run on input files, etags --members will produce real output and etags -m will produce the same invalid option message. I'm not sure if this is the fault of the man page or someone just not remembering to add -m to the list of available options. Also, it would be nice if report-xemacs-bug could send mail with smtpmail rather than the sendmail command, which I do not have. Thanks. -- Morgon Kanter <morgon(a)surgo.net>

2006-05-16 shell.el hosed 17 years, 10 months

Combination of `shell' and `comint' after your commit of 2006/05/25 02:49:48 +0 (marked 2006-05-16 in `ChangeLog') is hosed both in 21.4 and 21.5. In 21.4 after executing `shell' command can not run any command using minibuffer, including `M-x', `C-x b', `C-x C-f', `f1 k', `f1 l'. Message is output in echo area: Symbol's function definition is void: font-lock-unfontify-buffer (File name) completion in shell buffer also does not work as it previously would. Observed that on 21.4 In 21.5 it is broken in another way. Otherwise xemacs works normally, including minibuffer input. The message Symbol's function definition is void: font-lock-unfontify-buffer is output only once after `shell' command is executed. In shell mode buffer shell prompt never appears, if input command that must output something, like `echo', no output is seen. Please fix. About adding (add-hook 'change-major-mode-hook 'font-lock-unfontify-buffer nil t) without (make-local-hook 'change-major-mode-hook) in `comint-mode'. The function is intended to change settings in current buffer, and thus it changes global ones, which itself is improper, unless there are some special reasons. Adding `font-lock-unfontify-buffer' is particularly harmful because it *may* be defined by `font-lock', but not autoloaded in its package; autoloading the function or loading the file before `comint' may be done in settings of particular user, but not in every `comint' installation. In some build configurations it even may be highly undesirable, because they would dump `comint', but not `font-lock'. It may be undesirable to even load `font-lock', since it (unconditionally) enables itself on load (by changing `find-file-hooks'). (It is generally <against XEmacs policy>, but has remained so for years.)

[Bug: 21.5-b27] calendar 17 years, 11 months

I am absolutely puzzled why I haven't encountered this earlier. Reproduce by: 1. Start xemacs -vanilla 2. Type M-x calendar 3. Type C-h l and check out the warning which will look similar to this: ,---- | Wrong type argument: stringp, #<font-instance "DejaVu Sans Mono-12" on #<x-device on ":0.0" 0x58dd4> xft font: 0x17bfa50 0x5fad2> | Loading calendar... `---- The problem seems to be the return value of `face-font-instance', that is passed as argument to `x-make-font-bold'. The latter, however, doesn't expect a font-instance but a font name instead. A patch that works for me puts a call to `font-instance-name' in between the two function calls.
