[Bug: 21.5-b25] dired messes up DOS line-encoding handling

Dear Bug Team!
When one loads dired, and afterwards loads a text file with DOS
line-encoding (i.e., with CR-LF endings), the line-encoding is
correctly parsed, but not represented in buffer encoding state. When
the file is changed and written out again, all line-endings have been
converted to LF.
How to create the issue, with the appended file intro-dos.txt:
-- Start
xemacs -vanilla .
-- C-x C-f intro-dos.txt
-- Mode line shows Raw and not Raw:T
-- Change something, C-x C-s
-- Saved file has now LF line-endings.
As always, If I can help any further to track down the problem, I'm
willing to invest more work. But I would need your guidance where to
look -- I don't want to check the whole dired code if it messes
with coding-systems somewhere.

Strange delays when running remotely

Dear Bug Team!
When running Xemacs version 21 remotely (displaying on my local X
server) I have found that any multicharacter kills (such as kill-line,
kill-word, kill-ring-save, etc.) are extremely slow (maybe 15-30
seconds per kill). I only see this delay when I am running over a DSL
connection where the ping times to the remote system are on the order
of 100 milliseconds or more. When my local machine is on the same LAN
as the remote machine (much shorter ping times), I do not notice any
unusual delay in multicharacter kills. I also do not see this problem
when running Xemacs version 20.
My local X server when using the DSL connection is Exceed 3D running
under Microsoft Windows 98SE. When using the LAN, my local X server
is also Exceed 3D but running under Microsoft Windows 2000.

In XEmacs,
(message "hello\nyes")
displays "hello" in the echo area. In Emacs, you see both lines.
Does XEmacs support multi-line messages by twiddling a variable of
some kind? I've looked around, but haven't found anything.

[Bug: 21.4.19] Windows XP: can't open files like ~/My Documents/foo.txt

Dear Bug Team!
On Windows XP, I'm unable to open files in common directories like
"~/My Documents". If I had to guess, the problem is with filenames
that contain spaces. This seems like pretty basic stuff however
I just installed XEmacs and I don't have a .xemacs file.
Hope there's an easy answer!

Combine and post (actually, the "usual place" for a bug report is
here, currently) may be fractionally easier for us to deal with, but

Well, for me at least, Xemacs (currently 21.5.26 from cvs) hates metacity, kwin and compiz and has been misbehaving for years. While I can forgive XEmacs' compiz headaches, I don't understand what causes conflicts with KDE's kwin. Especially since XEmacs is the only application I've ever seen showing these phenomena.
I don't experience any flashing but strange re-sizing (while XEmacs should in fact be simply maximised) and mysterious movements of the XEmacs window after switching to another virtual desktop.
I've simply not been using the maximise stuff for those reasons but it *is* indeed annoying.

Spurious test failure in 21.4

I requested a hold on my recent monster 21.4 patch because I thought it
introduced a test failure. It didn't. (I also thought it was an md5
test that had failed, but that's because my eyes didn't line things up
right. It was actually a mule test failure.)
In tests/automated/mule-tests.el, the next to last block tests
file-system character conversion. The last part of that test creates a
directory, tries to cd to it, and then checks the value of pwd. The
first time I ran the 21.4 tests, that part failed. It failed, because
the directory already existed. I don't know why; perhaps it was left
over from a failing run with 21.5. In any case, make-directory signals
a file-error when the directory already exists, thus prematurely
terminating the test. Later, when I figured that out and nuked
everything in my temp directory, a rerun of the tests with the same
binary passed all of the mule tests.
I would propose that we delete-directory right before trying the
make-directory, except that delete-directory signals a file-error when
the directory does not exist. We could insert this line right before
the make-directory line:

(delete-directory (concat (temp-directory) "/\260\354"))
(file-error nil))
We could also wrap the make-directory in a condition-case like this, but
then we don't find out about failures of make-directory for other
reasons.

I have built betas in the 21.5 series for Solaris and the PC since about .12
After .25, I have given up trying to edit Perl in the Solaris version.
I now use the PC version exclusively now that our disks at work are on
a SAN reachable by both the PCs and UNIX.
Loading modules of considerable size (6000 lines) take 30 to 45
seconds to load, completely on the Solaris version, five to seven
seconds under PC, accessing the same disks.
The delay in both versions is at the point where the Fontifying
(rexexps) is displayed in the progress meter.
Why would the Solaris version be so much slower? What data can I
provide (aside from the usual bug report stuff) to help fiogure this
out? Is there a way to get a dump of what lisp is being executed upon
file load? Is there a particular portion of the M I should be FR-ing?
