Here are the keystrokes I used to find out about '-vanilla' in the XEmacs info:
C-h i m x e m a c s RET s - v a n i l l a RET s RET
decoded:
C-h i ; invoke info
mxemacs RET ; select the 'xemacs' node
s -vanilla RET ; search for the string '-vanilla'
s RET ; search again
And here's what info told me:
`-vanilla'
This is equivalent to `-q -no-site-file -no-early-packages'.
So, starting XEmacs with the -vanilla option is a way to take all user
and system customizations out of the equation.

Xemacs unexpected crashes

Dear Bug Team!
Xemacs seems to keep crashing without any specific triggering action by the
user. It had never done so in the past, with other installations and on
different machines.
Sometimes it crashes right after launching the program at the first attempt
of
typing any command. Sometimes it crashes when not used at all, idling in the
background. We thought it might have been triggered by the focus policy in
the
x-windows system, but changing it did not prevent crashes. They also happen
while running latex or idlwave. When xemacs crashes, it leaves no core files
behind. And we could not recover the Lisp backtrace either.
'Lisp backtrace follows:' is empty. We have added now (setq
stack-trace-on-error
t) to our .emacs. Any suggestions? thanks for your help. Rick Damiani

Hi all,
I tried to load the .dsp (VC6 project file) cannot be load onto my VS .NET
Version 7.1.3088 with .NET Framework 1.1 Version 1.1.4322 SP1
I was told that the .dsp was corrupted, but I look through it and find the
text file seems to be alright
Any suggestion for me to solve this?

Yup. We've found and fixed a few dumb problems (like reinit'ing Xft
on every instantiation of a font) and there's definitely some
redundant repainting going on, but as far as I can tell Xft is just
inherently slow anyway. That may be the price of client-side
rendering.
The Xrender extension is supposed to cache the glyphs, but on some X
servers (notably the Darwinports version of X.org that I use) Xrender
is disabled, and I've had reports that the caching doesn't seem to
work anyway. This may be due to more problems like those already
fixed, but unfortunately the Xft and fontconfig documentation doesn't
tell you anything about those aspects of wire protocol semantics.
Information to the contrary, especially how to get XEmacs to do it
correctly, would be *very* welcome. Even vague stuff you heard on IRC
#pango.:-)

I'm trying to find a way to work on UNICODE text (inputing CJK
characters) by XEmacs in an XP box
Is there anyway to install the MULE-UCS packages? and how is the status of
MULE-UCS in recent year?

XFT: Works but slow

As seen from the version info below, I compiled the CVS HEAD XEmacs
with newgc and xft few days ago. I am mostly surprised how well it has
worked. It hasn't been crashing constantly.
I use XEmacs to read my mail and some newsgroups with nntp with Gnus
and I have done it for a long time from work by running XEmacs
remotely from my home computer over X protocol. Now --with-xft it is
almost unusable slow when used that way. The repaints take seconds and
can be seen quite well.

This directory holds a Windows-native XEmacs setup kit for the stable
branch of XEmacs, the 21.4 series. The current release is a pre-release
version of 21.4.19. Please download and run 'XEmacs Setup 21.4.19-pre5.exe'
to install the pre-release of XEmacs 21.4.19 on your Windows computer.
(Most places in the kit and the installation will refer to 21.4.18,
but this really is a pre-release kit for 21.4.19.) Report your findings,
including bugs and feature requests, to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org.
This setup kit includes a small set of packages:

xemacs cvs + xft vs. planner.el

I've tracked down my font issue further, and hope someone can help with
this. This should be repeatable in any environment.
Setup:
* xemacs cvs (rebuilt it last night) w/xft support
* Arial for main font ((set-face-font 'default "Arial-18" nil nil 'prepend)
in .xemacs/init.el
* planner.el (I'm using 3.30)
My processing of init.el runs fine, and processing of custom.el works
*until* it hits (require 'planner), at which point there is a bit ugly stack
trace involving 'monospace'. (It was posted to this list previously)
If I load-file .xemacs/custom.el after that, it processes fine. Though the
header font for emacs-wiki ends up being the first monospace font it can
find (alphabeticaly), which ends up being a really aweful choice.
Any suggestions on how I can prespecify that font? or why the stack trace
in xemacs occurs? I'd like to get back to clean startup on xemacs again
with xft.

Yes, I, too, was surprised at the machinations configure.in goes to to
arrive at /usr/include! By the way, you'll notice the cd and pwd is
there to elide all the foolish ../'s.
I, personally, would be happy to replace the whole mess with
/usr/include, but I as afraid of a requirement around mingw as alluded
to in the commentary and the ChangeLog.
