Thanks for downloading and trying out the pre-release. In answer to
your questions, didn't the pre-announcement cover both those points?
1. Yes, due to arcanities of the release process, the version number
doesn't get incremented until the actual release.
2. You can download the vc-cc package to get ClearCase support.

README.wav/README.au crash xemacs

There are two files in xemacs-packages/etc/sounds that will crash xemacs.
They are really text files, but they are named like sound files which tempts
the user into playing them and crashing their xemacs. Maybe they should be
renamed to README.wav.txt and README.au.txt?

Yes, that works. Thank you very much.
My career as a prognosticator is in jeopardy, however, because once
I've applied this, it turns out that the 21.5 version of my patch to
find packages at run-time in ../xemacs-packages (attached) still
doesn't work. [Can you believe it?! :-) ]
Your original advice was to modify the root-finding code, and I have
done that; with my modification installed, the parent of the
xemacs-packages directory is correctly found as a root and a data
root, but the xemacs-packages directory does not get searched and
added to load-path.
This technique worked for 21.4, but I guess there must be an extra
step required for 21.5. Mike, do you have any suggestions for
debugging this?

I wasn't sure if I should start here or on the gnus bug list...
I was reading mail in a gnus foreign (nnmh) group. Mail from one person
who uses a Latin-1 escape in his From line appears as (for example)
! [ ?: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Ignacio_] [osol-discuss] Opensolaris sessions
in the Summary buffer. When I view the actual message, the From line is
rendered as
From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Ignacio_Marambio_Cat=E1n?= <darkjoker(a)gmail.com>
and there's a message in the minibuffer saying
Unknown charset: ISO-8859-1
With gnus 5.10.6 (XEmacs package 1.80) the From is rendered as expected,
with an accented character.
I can reproduce this with "xemacs -vanilla".

I was trying to run etags from an XEmacs shell (not a DOS shell). I
wasn't able to do this with 21.4.18 unless I [manually] edited my path
to include the etags directory. In 21.4.13, I did not need to do this.
Further investigation showed that 21.4.13 added a registry item called
Path to the registry which added the directory to the path for XEmacs
shells only (not the global system path). Version 21.4.18 does not add
this registry item.

Yes, that works. Thank you very much.
My career as a prognosticator is in jeopardy, however, because once
I've applied this, it turns out that the 21.5 version of my patch to
find packages at run-time in ../xemacs-packages (attached) still
doesn't work. [Can you believe it?! :-) ]
Your original advice was to modify the root-finding code, and I have
done that; with my modification installed, the parent of the
xemacs-packages directory is correctly found as a root and a data
root, but the xemacs-packages directory does not get searched and
added to load-path.
This technique worked for 21.4, but I guess there must be an extra
step required for 21.5. Mike, do you have any suggestions for
debugging this?

Vin,
Your last email clued me in to solving my problem.
Apparently, I had a file in my root directory called TAGS. It was an
empty file (of size 0 bytes). I'm not sure how or why the file was
there as I don't keep any source code in my root directory and I've
never run ETAGS from that directory.
I deleted that file and everything now behaves as expected. That also
seemed to solve the path problem I was having. Very weird!
So anyway, I now have 21.4.19-pre6 as my current XEmacs and am happy
again:)
But I think its still worth pointing out that 21.4.13 worked as expected
even with that rogue TAGS file in my root directory and 21.4.18 (and
later) does not. I'll let you decide how you want to deal with that.
