2) Unpack them to: [1]

3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):

* XEmacs 21.4.17 "Jumbo Shrimp" is released.
"Jumbo Shrimp" is the seventeenth in the OXYMORON series.
The latest stable release of XEmacs, XEmacs 21.4.17 - "Jumbo Shrimp",
is now available from xemacs.org and its mirrors.
XEmacs 21.4.17 repairs a serious problem in the 21.4.16 release. This
problem could cause any package or lisp code using shy regexps to
either go into any infinite loop or to crash XEmacs. The 21.4.16
release has been withdrawn because of this defect; see
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-announce/200502/msg00000.html
for more details.

xemacs-21.4.16-21.4.17.patch.gz. This does not update .elcs or .infos,
they will be rebuilt when you make XEmacs. If you have an earlier
version, you can repeatedly apply patchkits.
As a special case, because the 21.4.16 release has been withdrawn,
there is also a patch to upgrade from a 21.4.15 tarball to 21.4.17.
The tarballs and patches are signed with my GPG key, available from
most public keyservers and also from

On platforms with a Bourne shell and find available, something like

will convert your entire tree.
Tags are also the same; to update to release 21.4.17, use the release

At the moment, get-selection-timestamp behaves like so, after you've
selected a region and clicked Edit -> Copy within XEmacs;

Elsewhere, within select.el, thirty-two bit integers--such are X11
timestamps--are encoded as (high-sixteen-bits . low-sixteen-bits). If
get-selection-timestamp returned data in this format, it could usefully be
used to pass across selection timestamp data to other apps, without the
succeeding-but-causing-an-XEmacs-error that it does at the moment.
I propose reworking get-selection-timestamp to return such a cons, and
putting in place an alternative function on the C level, to be called from
such contexts like the select-gtk.c extract above. Does anyone have any
conceptual objections to this?

I’m not keeping to my stated schedule, though, am I ;-) . I have spent a
good bit of this evening working on selection fixes, though. It seems subtly
broken in so many ways--for example, if XEmacs is linked against Motif,
it’ll only ever offer TARGETS, TIMESTAMP, STRING or COMPOUND_TEXT to pass
out, despite paragraphs and paragraphs of Lisp occupied with doing that
better.

Hello,
the current preview-latex code base for XEmacs loads the image data
immediately into image specifiers instead of just specifying the file
name. The reason was some horrible bug that arose in connection with
Mule when loading dired.el or dired-x.el that caused image files to
get loaded with some character or EOL conversion applied (which
obviously failed).
I believe this this might have been addressed at that time in
development. It turns out that the current installation procedure of
preview-latex for XEmacs has some chicken-and-hen-problem due to this
workaround code we used within preview-latex itself. The requirements
for up-to-date XEmacs versions for current AUCTeX versions are pretty
rigid, anyway, so I'd like to remove the workaround. This requires
a) making sure that indeed the current code base of XEmacs will load
image files without conversions (character set _and_ line endings) on
both MULE and non-MULE XEmacsen.
b) it would be _very_ nice to know just _what_ version of XEmacs
started doing this correctly so that we can mention it in the
installation prerequisites and dependencies.
If anybody can get a hold on this information, I'd be pretty glad.
The workaround appeared in preview-latex with the following ChangeLog
entry, so I expect that at a similar time an XEmacs fix, _if_ there
has been a fix, would have been concocted.

- What happened.
The XEmacs doesn't start up I wanted it installed into
Cygwin. I get the following:
This application has failed to start
because cygXpm-noX4.dll was not found.
- What you thought should have happened.
When I click on Icon on my think pad I go into XEmacs
editor.
- Precisely what you were doing at the time.
I clicked on the XEmacs icon on desktop.
I am running Cygwin on my think pad running windows XP. I wanted to
install the Cygwin version of XEmacs.

Crash: XEmacs 21.5.18 coredumps when jumping to errors in certain compilation buffers

How to reproduce:
Use the attached file "compilation-buffer" which is one of the
typical contents of the *compilation* buffer which triggers this
problem.
Call XEmacs like this:
xemacs -q -eval '(find-file "compilation-buffer")' -f compile-goto-error
It crashes immediately.
Alternatively you could just load the file into XEmacs and hit
RET, then it will crash as well.
Lisp backtrace and c-backtrace are attached.
