I hate to disagree with Stephen, but I've never been able to get Pitts'
version to work. I don't like Xcode, except of course the GCC part.
It is very painful to move back and forth between Xcode and configure,
unless you really know Xcode (and then there really is no point).
I've been using Andrew's version of GNU Emacs for about 6 years
(going back to OS 9 even). He has supported the GNU Emacs ports
(OS 9 and OS X) completely satisfactorily IMHO. I'm sure that his
support of XEmacs would be no less. I think we should all be
encouraging this. His choice to use comp.emacs.xemacs rather
than xemacs-beta might be idiosyncratic, but it is understandable.
I myself can't keep up with xemacs-beta. So, I second Malcolm's
suggestion and I'd like to see this on the XEmacs Community News
RSN. If we can all agree, then I'd be willing to come up with a
patch to index.contents.

Change of whitespace-mode to whitespace-visual-mode

Hello,
I've changed the name and the prefix of my old whitespace-mode package and
have also fixed some bugs, which were caused by changes of the XEmacs in the
past. The new package can coexist with the package whitespace.el, which is
usefull for a different use case.
Please exchange the old whitespace-mode.el with the new
whitespace-visual-mode.el attached to this email.

PS: There are other packages in the XEmacs, which I wrote a few years ago,
like view-process-mode and hm--html-mode. I've not looked at these packages
for a long time. So please let me know, if they should be changed too.

Whenever I scroll past a certain point (usually the Forms node)
in the top INFO node, XEmacs crashes. This is consistently
reproducible, regardless of how I scroll the buffer (C-v, C-n,
the scroll bar, etc.) or whether I go immediately to help (which
I always do with C-h i) after startup or do some other things
first. The core is dumped, but empty.

Hello,
I just tried to install XEmacs 21.4.17 on Solaris 9 using gcc 3.4.3.
That resulted in the following error:
bytecode.c: In function `invalid_byte_code_error':
bytecode.c:1494: error: incompatible type for argument 1 of `__builtin_va_start'
bytecode.c:1497: error: incompatible type for argument 1 of `__builtin_va_end'
I then searched the archive for information regarding this bug, but I
only found the email appended below. I managed to track down the
cause of this bug. It turns out that the problem is caused by the
src/s/sol2.h header file, which overrides the gcc definition for
va_list. This happens to work with gcc 2.95.3, but it doesn't work
with gcc 3.4.3 (or gcc 3.4.2). If the header file is changed as shown
below, XEmacs will (at least) compile with gcc 2.95.3 and gcc 3.4.3 on
Solaris 8 (Sparc) and Solaris 9 (x86), which are the configurations I
have available for testing.
Here is the snippet of the src/s/sol2.h file that I changed:

Daniel,
it looks to me as if your gcc installation is not quite
correct -- something along the line of "fixincludes" might
be necessary. However, I'm not the person to talk about
for this because I don't use gcc!
Another thing to check is that the version of gcc you
are using genuinely does work on solaris 9.

XEmacs opinion for preview-latex required...

Hi,
preview-latex contains in its mode setup
(and preview-use-balloon-help
(not (and (boundp 'balloon-help-mode)
balloon-help-mode))
(balloon-help-minor-mode 1))
and preview-use-balloon-help defaults to t. Previews and preview
icons get equipped with help mostly indicating something like "press
mouse 2 to show text, mouse 3 for context menu" or "press mouse 2 for
PostScript error, mouse 3 for source code"). It is usually obvious,
also from the cursor change, that something might happen upon
clicking, and the previous case where mouse 3 deleted the preview
(which annoyed people who are obviously used to checking things out by
clicking on them) has been replaced by a context menu in recent
versions.
On the other hand, we have received several complaints about the
balloon-help-mode which seemingly results from this mode being not so
very "native". The consequences are that the windows that pop up are
fully decorated and tend to interfere with the focus. Apparently,
this situation is quite worse on Windows. I have no idea whether the
Windows situation has improved anything over the last few years, but
how to switch balloon help of has made it into the preview-latex FAQ.
It would appear that outside of preview-latex, ballon-help-mode is
used rather rarely, and it may show, particular on some platforms.
Are there any guidelines about whether a minor mode that goes to the
pain of tagging everything with balloon-help properties should
actively enable the mode?
It is obvious that 90% of all users will not bother changing a given
default or reading documentation and will never discover a feature
that does not hit them squarely in the face. Would you recommend not
using this by default nevertheless?
We have one case of rather "non-obvious" mouse use, namely the one on
error indicators where mouse 2 takes one to the corresponding
PostScript error, and mouse 3 to the source file. Do you have any
suggestions for a behavior which would be "more natural" and thus not
require a balloon help for using? Ignore mouse2 completely, context
menu with the two possibilities on mouse 3? Identical context menu on
both mouse buttons? Go to error directly with mouse2, context menu on
mouse3?
What would be the XEmacs way of doing this?
