Coordinating OO-Browser Package Release with Core Changes

As I get ready to release the new OO-Browser package (to Norbert for
pre-release) how do I coordinate that release with changes that I may request
to lib-src? Specifically, I'd like xoobr to be built in lib-src as part of
core and I'd like to see this included in 21.4. I realize, however, that
just because I may submit a patch to build xoobr in lib-src it does not mean
that a new 21.4 patch release will be released shortly thereafter.
So how are these things coordinated? Also, I am working with 21.4, not
21.5. If I submit a patch for 21.4 am I obligated to submit the same patch
to 21.5? Or is there some higher power that ensures that all 21.4 patches
are tweaked and applied to 21.5 as well?
As an aside, the OO-Browser will function well without xoobr. It's just that
some of its optional functionality will not be available until xoobr is
available to it.

When executing M-x about-xemacs, the full version number is not
shown.
To reproduce:
type M-x about-xemacs
Result:
Only 21.4 is shown as the version.
Expected result:
21.4.13 should be shown as the version

Follow these steps:
1) Press 'C-h i' to get the info directory.
2) Select any entry and view its info file.
3) Press 'd' to redisplay the top-level directory.
4) Wait 5 seconds.
The dir info buffer redisplays itself and changes mode!
Does anyone else see this problem?

i have a system with two versions installed, 14.12 being the default
(symlink pointing to...), and when i started 15.b14 giving to bash its
full name, its appearance was ... messy
after some investigation i found that the application name was
different from Emacs, and i thought to the "-name" option for a fix
what the info node says about "-name"

`-name NAME'
Use the resource manager resources specified by NAME. The default
is to use the name of the program (`argv[0]') as the resource
manager name.

while the man page says

-name name
Specifies the program name which should be used when looking up
defaults in the user's X resources.

what happens is different in different environments
1. debian, 5.14b
doesn't obeys -name (i mean, it doesn't do what _i_ think it should
(but i'm often wrong), that is, if i start "xemacs -name porridge"
the window names are:
1st Window: Emacs.emacs.emacs:__scratch_＠boffi95: Geometry=967x669+1+1
2nd Window: Emacs.emacs._scratch_＠boffi95: Geometry=955x632+1+28
and xemacs finds its proper resources)
the program name when looking for resources is Emacs, even if
argv[0] is xemacs-21.5-b14
2. mandrake, 5.14b
doesn't obeys -name (imHo)
the program name when looking for resources is argv[0] (it
doesn't find proper resources!)
3. mandrake, 4.12
doesn't obeys -name (imHo)
the program name is Emacs anyway
i'm in doubt if the docs need some clarification, if the one in need
of clarification it's me, or there is a sort of problem in the program

Any Packages Contain A Binary?

Are there any examples of a package that contain a binary that is not part of
the XEmacs core but is used only by the package?
The OO-Browser contains a graphical tree browser, xoobr. As distributed by
BeOpen (Altrasoft), the OO-Browser Makefile would build the elisp source but
the binary was downloaded as a pre-built binary for a specified platform.
I'd like to build xoobr as part of the package but don't know if the package
facility can support building a binary as part of the package.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

In xemacs-21.5.14 (and earlier versions as well) the following code is
found in src/process-unix.c (previously called src/callproc.c) around

As the comment section explains, this is a very quick and dirty hack. In
our case it prevents us from using xemacs as an editor in a sequence of
pipe-connected programs.

We have program A create a set of pipes, then fork+exec XEmacs, which
then uses (start-process ...) to create program B, which not only needs
to communicate with the XEmacs session, but also with the original
program A. Since XEmacs blatantly closes all filedescriptors except
std{in,out,err}, program B can no longer use the pipe to program A.
In xemacs-21.4.8 the comment header for this hack was slightly
different:

After our explanation maybe you now see "why child processes need any
more than the standard 3 file descriptors." and that just removing this
line from the comment is not enough to fix the problem.
As a comparison, check the same relevant section in GNU Emacs 21.2.21
which shows:

They (GNU Emacs) only close the relevant filedescriptors, which is why
our approach using pipes works perfectly with GNU Emacs.
Please let me know if there is a version of XEmacs that addresses this
issue, or whether you intend to fix it in some upcoming release. Until
then we are unable to add xemacs to our list of supported editors which
so far includes GNU Emacs, GVIM and Eclipse.

There seems to be a conflict between the documentation and the code in the CVS
head when it comes to the configuration option '--with-dialogs=lucid'.
In the INSTALL document the following is said:
The `lucid' option is accepted and will result in the `athena' toolkit
being used.
while the code is 'configure.in' is:

Horrible directory listing performance

I've been noticing lately that the performance whenever a directory is listed
is terrible. Anyone else see this?
I'm using: Value: "21.4 (patch 12) \"Portable Code\" XEmacs Lucid"
on RH9 Linux.
Even worse, when a *local* directory listing is attempted, xemacs hangs for a
*very* long time if an automount point, not at all related to the local
directory, is hung. It eventually gives up, complaining

Why is truename looking for /net/adgcluster7/tmp/, when I ased for a *local*
directory listing having nothing to do with this?

When to run make for regular builds?

I would like to automate the building of XEmacs on my system so much as
possible. Currently I test for the version.sh file and if it is newer than
Makefile in the root of the XEmacs tree, I run configure. However, this
always leads to a new build with recompilations of all the src/ . Could
anyone suggest a way to be sure configure gets run if needed while at the
same time, not running it when only some of the object files or compiled
lisp files would need to be replaced?
