Did you try with -nw ? I am able to use XEmacs if I use -nw but I do get
the above message if I try to do simple things like exe-exe-comm i.e M-x.

Package Creation/Building Problem

I am trying to create and build a new package. I followed all the
instructions as documented in the various locations.
When I do the initial 'make' I am getting a build error. I have spent quite
alot of time looking at this and comparing my package with other packages
that build correct. I cannot find the problem. I am going to include my
output. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction or tell me what to
do narrow down the cause.

Dear Bug Team!
When opening a perl, sh or html file and choosing Options->Syntax
Highlighting->In This Buffer, the fontifying progress bar would
appear and flash as if being refreshed many times a second. But no
progress would actually be made. If I bring another window to the
front such that Xemacs loses focus, the fontifying immediately
finishes.
I searched the net for similar bugs and found one:

As described in the above URL, editing my src/EmacsFrame.c file to
undo the 2nd hunk (reverting from 1.17.2.2 to 1.17.2.1) fixed this
problem (fontifying is now immediately completed).
Patch to fix this problem (I'm not a programmer, so I apologize
if this is not in a preferred format):

xemacs-21.5.14 build failure: configure breaks because of no libtiff.so

I am doing a build of xemacs-21.5.14 from the source tarball. (This
is partly so I can belatedly follow up an earlier bug report and
provide a build log for that - but I thought it best to report each
build problem in order.)
configure fails because 'The C compiler can no longer build working
executables'. The reason for that is that configure is adding -ltiff
to the compiler command line even though there is no libtiff.so in the
linker's search path. configure ought to check that the library
exists before it adds -ltiff.

The config.log is attached. For the time being I will work around the
problem by installing libtiff.

Problem with psgml-html

When i try to byte-compile the file psgml-html.el, I get the following error
in the *Compile-Log-Show* buffer:

While compiling toplevel forms:

This is with the file from the main packages site (i.e. no changes from me).
I first noticed the problem when I tried to byte-compile a modified version
and figured it was something I had done to the file. My XEmacs is 21.5.b14
(+CVS-20030629). I haven't seen this with other files that I have written
myself.
By the way I have this sexp in my start-up file
(eval-after-load 'psgml
(load-file
"/Users/royar/usr/local/lib/xemacs/site-lisp/html-mine.elc"
)
)
but it never gets called (or rather the redefinitions of some of the code
never get applied). They work if I load them directly after loading the
psgml library (by reading in an html file).
Should the 'psgml be 'psgml-html instead?

CVS Update Question

I have been issuing the following command in my XEmacs build directory
cvs -d :pserver:cvs＠cvs.xemacs.org:/pack/xemacscvs status
to check whether there are new files in CVS. I cannot recall this command
ever showing anything other that Status: Up-to-date for any file in the
tree.
Today, after trying the command again, I then issued this command
cvs -z3 -d :pserver:cvs＠cvs.xemacs.org:/pack/xemacscvs update
And the following showed up as changed files
version.sh, lisp/ChangeLog, lisp/cl-macs.el, lisp/derived.el,
lisp/window-xemacs.el, src/.gdbinit, src/ChangeLog, src/opaque.c
What am I doing incorrectly wrt the status command?

[Bug: 21.5-b13] Problem with switching buffers after splitting window

Dear Bug Team!
I get a "Cannot switch buffers in minibuffer window" error message
when I do the following. I can reproduce this at will with 'xemacs -q'.
1. Start with a single buffer.
2. Do 'C-x 2'
3. Go to the bottom buffer.
4. Do 'C-x 3'
5. Go the right hand side buffer.
6. Do 'C-x b' (switch-to-buffer here). Give any buffer name or even
'RET' for the default choice.
I see the following error:
