How do you get the packages to load in 21.4.9 Native or Cygwin?

I've been banging my head against the wall with
attempting to get the packages to load.
I used netinstaller to download the native version.
When I attempt to follow the man pages on how to
install packages by hand I get the following error:
"Symbols value as variable is void:
allow-remote-paths".
Additionally I have tried setting the environment
variables for EMACSLOADPATH and EMACSPACKAGEPATH as
outlined in the PROBLEMS readme left in c:\Program
Files\XEmacs\XEmacs-21.4.9. I also made sure the
registry entries referenced by the same readme file
were set correctly.
As a last resort I tried setting both the
configure-packages-path and load-path variables, no
luck with that either. Then I've tried to explicitly
do a load-file and eval-buffer on
"./xemacs-packages/lisp/dired.el", but the load failed
because it couldn't find the location of the files
loaded by dired.el such as dired-xemacs.el.
Would someone provide some insight please? What am I
missing here? I'm a long time Emacs user and have
tried all the ways I could to fix the problem. In my
previous experience with emacs and xemacs, once the
program loads utilities like dired are available. I've
never had this kind of problem before.

You shouldn't do any of those. If installed properly, the packages
should Just Work. Check out the package installation instructions at
<http://www.xemacs.org/Documentation/packageGuide.html>. You can also
use netinstaller to install them on Windows.
Please use <xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org> for this kind of reports, the
-patches list is for patches. The mailing list descriptions are at
<http://www.xemacs.org/Lists/index.html>.

The original XEmacs 21.4.9 (Windows) had a problem which resulted from a bad
merge from vanilla XEmacs 21.4.9. This resulted in font-lock displaying
weird configurations of the progress guage. Also the website did not reflect
the new version, nor the CHANGES file. Both problems have now been fixed and
the version updated to 21.4.9-1. The original announcement follows.
* XEmacs 21.4.9 "Informed Management (Windows)" is released.
"Informed Management" is the ninth in the OXYMORON series.
XEmacs 21.4.9 "Informed Management (Windows)" is the fifth in a series of
MS-Windows focused releases of XEmacs. The intent of this release
series is to provide source and binary distributions of the XEmacs
21.4.x series with any additional fixes or enhancements necessary to
provide a pleasurable editing experience on the MS-Windows platform.
Source is available via cvs at cvs.xemacs.org. This release has the
release tag r21-4-9-windows and the most current snapshot will always
have the branch tag windows-21-4.
The binaries for both cygwin and native MS-Windows are available via
the XEmacs netinstaller which can be found at
http://www.xemacs.org/Download/win32/setup.exe This version of the

Argh. I don't have a clue what's going on here, it Just Works for me in
21.4.9 (and I can't currently test with other versions). Could
something in your custom.el or init.el cause this? Anybody else see
this problem?

Hi,
Xemacs 21.4.8 will occasionally exhibit the following problem,
often triggered by running mail-send-and-exit in a mail buffer
(though this is not the only cause, it was the most recent).
The window will not not refresh, and xemacs will begin to
take the entire cpu. The only recovery seems to be a kill -9
of the process (although in the case documented below, returning
from frame #28 brought things back to life enough that I
could shut down cleanly).
I've included below a backtrace from gdb attaching to the
runaway process.
I haven't worked out how to reproduce the problem on demand,
but I get it enough that if it would be helpful, I can
dig up any information you might like.

Dear Bug Team!
I upgraded lately to XEmacs-2.5-b8 in order to see if I can use it for
daily work. I'm pretty pleased with the modifications (like the
line/column mode numbers being better placed). Thank you very much for
your excellent work.
Still, while investigating, I observed that there is a nice
vc-annotate feature in the VC package. I used to do
M-! cvs annotate <filename>
all the time, but of course C-x v g is much much better :-)
The problem with vc-annotate is that, by default, it has ugly contrast
faces (black background with dark foreground colors). Of course, my
first step was to attempt to customize these faces and have them saved
for further use, in my .xemacs/custom.el file. Yet, vc-annotate
doesn't seem to obey correctly to these settings.
That is, loading a CVS file and doing C-x v g (or M-x vc-annotate),
still brings the unreadable dark-on-black faces. I have to do a
M-x load-file<RET>~/.xemacs/custom.el
in order for the colors to be corrected. At this moment, my settings
become obeyed.
Yet, the next time I will do a vc-annotate (within the same XEmacs
usage session, i.e. without having stopped and restarted XEmacs in the
meanwhile), on a different file, I will still get the black
background, and will be forced to, once again, M-x
load-file<RET>~/.xemacs/custom.el.

pasting Latin1 from Mozilla to XEmacs

You've probably noticed that if you try to paste a Latin1 character
such as "£" from Mozilla to XEmacs, you get a question-mark instead.
This is a bug in Mozilla that I reported a while ago
(http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=136004) but I got
tired of waiting around for them to fix it, so I kluged a workaround:
before asking for the 'STRING target, check for the 'text/unicode
target.
But, I don't know anything about Unicode, so what I did to convert
it to Latin1 was just to delete every other byte. I leave the right
implementation to those who know/care...
