Xemacs on Sun-Fire-280R

I've been attempting to build xemacs-21.1.14 on our Sun cluster, which includes
a Sun-Fire-280R (Ultra-III) machine. All systems in the cluster are running
Solaris 8. I find that the xemacs built by:

segfaults almost immediately on the Ultra-III system, but runs OK on the
others (all Ultra-II). This is true whether the build was performed on the
Ultra-II or the Ultra-III platform. The details of the build are as in the
following 'configure' output:

Tested your recipe on 21.4.8 built from the tarballs with Sun Workshop 6
update 1 on Solaris 2.7 results in an (apparently) hung editor. It's not
consuming any noticeable quantity of CPU cycles and I can interrupt it with
C-g and break out of whatever it thinks is going on.
Hmmm, for me it seems to hang on the C-x h, actually. If I try to do M-x or
M-: (or a variety of other things but a C-g for that matter) after the C-x
h, I get no response from the editor. This seems to start with only 3236
lines of your test pattern in the buffer. I'm not sure at this point whether
I have helped clarify or confused the issue :-/ Looks like I'm hitting a
limit of some kind, but whether OS or XEmacs I'm not sure. Other than the
fact it doesn't work, it seems fairly well behaved though, I didn't crash at
all while narrowing down the buffer size.

That's a string of 80 A's but that shouldn't really matter. It's the
size of the buffer that counts.
In some buffer, M-: (foo 30000). Then do M-x text-mode. Then C-x h
to mark the whole buffer. Finally, C-w to kill it.
This crashes xemacs. The Lisp backtrace is:

This is starting to bite me at least once a day, especially in GNUS
when someone sends me some huge Word attachment.

Okay, it wasn't as hard as I feared, assuming that this correct.
Here is the output from the where command in dbx after attaching to the
running process (I couldn't get the GUI started using a run command in the
debugger, DISPLAY was still set and I didn't know what else to check). The
first printout is with it hung, the second with it not hung, both
immediately after doing the C-x h, all on the same instance of the editor.
It does seem like there is a difference in the logic, but I leave it for
more experienced minds to decide how/if it is significant.

Hi Folks!
The last couple of weeks I've delayed some package and Sumo releases
again and again and again. I'm really sorry about this. Both of my
kids have been sick (just a cold) and my time has been eaten up with
looking after my family.
They're coming good now so just bear with me. The Sumo tarballs will
be uploaded late tonight and in the morning I'll move everything out
of Pre-Release.

Yes. I'm not sure my terminology is entirely correct, it's not my area of
expertise. But in looking at Sun's READMES in the install tree, that is
what I found.

Maybe this weekend, I think I remember someone sending out a "How-to debug
XEmacs" message on the list not to long ago that I could try and follow.
It's not really a problem for me, I was just curious because I had recently
built 21.4.8 coupled with the similarity between Ray's OS and mine and tried
his recipe. Since my results differed noticeably from his and it was not
correct operation, I offered them up as another data-point.

Correct, or at least down to plus/minus a lines worth of characters. At
3235 lines, C-w and other operations I tried after a C-x h worked, at 3236
lines it hung as stated.

Yes to the first. I repeatedly tried C-x h until I had bounded where the
problem occurred to the nearest line of characters. This was all done on
the same instance of XEmacs, I did not restart each time since C-g broke out

GCC 3.1 fails to configure

GCC 3.1 will say warning messages in stderr if the directories
search order for header files is changed from the default value.
Because of this, it fails to configure XEmacs in my machine as
follows:

Any ideas? I'm going to modify gcc-3.1/gcc/cppinit.c don't say
such messages and rebuild GCC 3.1.
