[Warning: This patch is wrong it does not handle modifying buffers
properly. But at least I wanted to show you the intermediate results
as I am working only very slowly.]
Bits of this probably belong -design... Anyway here is a little
history of the patch
Summary of the problem: In buffers with a lot of extents syntax
related operations such as font-locking with lot of regexps with
syntax codes in them or reindenting becomes unbearably slow.
The syntax cache maintains an interval saying where the cached value
is valid. It used to compute this with Fnext/Fprev_extent_change which
in heavily font-locked buffers gives quite a small range. In a the
typical case (syntax properties not used) the real range should stretch the
whole buffer!
This means that the cache can often not be used and needs to be
recomputed roughly 10000000 times during a single font-lock run for
Jerry James.
I have been using Stefan Epardaud's TraverseSchema.java example where
a single indent of 1 line costs about 15 seconds on my 950 Mhz athlon.
I think Java files hit this thing (and emacs in general) pretty hard
because they have so few things at top-level.
This change contains the following changes
1. Attempts to streamline cache usage
Made virtually no difference, but does clean-up the code.
In a Mule build there is potential for not using Bufpos as the
cache units.
2. When computing a new range value see whether it can be merged with
the old. Made only a little difference, the reindenting code jumps
around to irregurlarly.
3. A new routine to compute a very good estimate for the validity
range. For the typical case this gives the whole buffer as a range.
It still is quite quick. It currently isn't as quick as I hoped (i.e.
no more expensive than the old code). Unfortunately this change
make things slower in general because the syntax cache is thrown away
so often (thousands of times during a simple indent).
4. A quick hack to not throw away the cache so often. This still needs
some work, such as invalidating on the cache on modifications and
keeping a cache per buffer so that quick regexps on strings don't
trash it.
With 4. in place the changes in 3 finally start paying off. For
instance Stefan's indent case is now 1.5 seconds. An order of
magnitude faster.
Please do a few test-runs with this patch to see how it "feels".
It may also be advisable to do some work on extent-property storage to
make finding extents with a certain property much faster without
growing the structure even more.

Incomplete line for recompiling C++ code

Dear sirs:
when compiling a .cpp file with the Tools->Compile option, the buffer of
previous compilation commands are shwon uncomplete if they are too long
to fit in a single screen. In the menu window they are display with
heading dots (... -pedantic-errors -Wall -Werrors). The problem is that
when compiling again, the previous command line is also retrieved
uncompleted, with the heading dots instead of using the whole line.

Extent boundaries inconsistent w.r.t. extent properties

The XEmacs extent behavior is inconsistent when dealing with the boundaries of
extents. Here are some examples of the problems I have encountered:
Put the following code into a scratch buffer and evaluate it:

Inconsistency 1: the begin-glyph is highlighted with the extent's highlight
face, but the end-glyph is not. The only way to make the end-glyph
highlighted is to add an extent that covers the character after the first
extent, and to add a highlight to it:

I tried modifying the extent-boundary properties in order to get the
glyph-coloring to work for both glyps, but the extent-boundary properties do
not affect the glyph's faces. It seems to me that the proper behavior would
be to use an extent's face to color a glyph iff a character typed at the
glyph's position in the buffer would be inserted into the extent (in other
words, if the extent's boundary is closed on the glyph's position). Can this
be implemented?
Inconsistency 1.5:
Not only does the face from the second extent map onto the end-glyph of the
first extent, the "invisible" property of the second extent does too. The
following code makes the first extent's end-glyph disappear:
(set-extent-properties e2 `(invisible t))
I was hoping that an invisble region of text after the first extent could be
covered with a highlighted extent in order to make the end-glyph highlighted,
but it appears that this workaround to the first problem won't work (because
if the kludgy text is invisible, the glyph will be too).
Inconsistency 2: The 'read-only extent-property affects any edit that would be
included in an extent, but keymaps work differently. So, if you write:

Then you will not be able to type at either boundary of the extent, since both
are closed. Now, if you execute the following code:
(setq mykeys (make-keymap))

(define-key mykeys [(f)] #'forward-char-command)
Then you can go to the beginning of the extent and type 'f' repeatedly until
the cursor gets to the end. However, when you are at the end-boundary of the
extent, the 'f' key isn't recognized as a forward-char command anymore, and
you will get a "Buffer is read-only..." error.
An example of why you'd want to do this is that you need a region of text to
be read-only, and so you want to remap the keybindings on the extent so that
they do something useful. This is the case in an XEmacs application I am
working on. Unfortunately, an extent's keymap always covers the beginning
boundary of the extent and not the ending boundary, no matter what the
extent's boundary properties are.
In any case, there is another inconsistency that shows that something here is
definately awry: "C-h k f" with the cursor at the end of the extent reports
that 'forward-char-command is not bound to 'f' (which is consistent with the
behavior we empirically observed); however "C-h b" reports that the 'f'
keystroke IS bound to forward-char-command! Something is not working quite as
was intended...
I was not able to find any policy on the boundaries of the effect of extent
properties in the XEmacs documentation, and it like there should be such a
policy if one does not exist. Can there be a policy that all
extent-properties w.r.t. extent-borders should behave according to the
closed/open extent properties as I suggested earlier? It seems that this
would be the right way to do things.
I have not investigated the behavior of extent-properties other than those
mentioned above. I consequently suspect that other inconsistencies might
exist as well.

Does C++ allow you to define explicit casts?

I don't know C++ that well, and the book I have on it (Stroustrop, 2nd
ed, I think) is 10 years old at least.
XEmacs has typedefs such as Bytecount and Charcount. Currently they are
just ints but I'd like to introduce some additional type-checking using
C++. In particular, I'd like to define them as classes, with the normal
operators overloaded in normal ways, and to allow free mixing (more or
less) between these types and ints (at the very least, it's reasonable
to pass constant ints to a function expecting a Bytecount or Charcount).
What I don't want is to be able to pass one of them to a function
expecting the other -- but it *should* be possible with an explicit
cast, e.g. (Bytecount) x. Problem is, the "cast operator" that can be
defined on a class seems to define implicit casts, not explicit. Is
there any way to do what I want?
