Dear Bug Team!
When visiting a new file in my home directory:
C-x C-f ~\My Documents\foo.txt
XEmacs reports that the directory is write-protected and the resulting
buffer is read-only. Indeed, on inspection of my filesystem (Windows
XP with NTFS) my directories are marked "read-only", but this seems to
be the default and other applications have no issue with creating new
files. Removing this "read-only" attribute from the directory allows
XEmacs to create the new file, but I do not feel I should manually
remove this attribute from every new directory I create just because
XEmacs cannot do what other applications can.

I am copying XEmacs Beta on this so that discussion of the scripts and
whether something like them is desirable for XEmacs can continue on the

OS X Aqua package updates

I wrote earlier that package update was not working for me with the recently
available Carbonized version of XEmacs 21.5.b9 for Mac OS X. I finally
decided to try to update the packages with a defcustom defining the remote
site and the local directory

added to the ~/.xemacs/init.el startup file. With this in place, I could
update packages. For some reason, going through the `M-x customize-variable
RET package-get-remote RET' procedure always hung up on the first package.
I still got a number of errors and had to restart the update after the first
attempt failed with an ftp error (SET IDLE not recognized), but after
telling XEmacs to update a second time, the dozen old packages were updated.

In 21.4.10 and 21.4.11, trying to reply to Paul Krause's report, I got
a crash in regex.c. For some reason when the number of failures gets
"big" (I'm not sure how big that is, I've not yet been able to watch
the crash in gdb), the local variable this_reg in PUSH_FAILURE_POINT
gets overwritten with (it seems) the value of the (static) global
variable fail_stack.size.
So it looks like glibc's (2.3.1) alloca doesn't fail nicely? Or maybe
GCC (2.95.4) is screwing up?
Compiling with -DREGEX_MALLOC "fixes".

Dear Bug Team!
I'm finding cperl mode in Xemacs 21.4.10 to be very slow (compared to
21.1.7, which is what I used to use). It seems to perform garbage
collection every few key strokes, slowing down keyboard response when
typing and when scrolling to the point of being almost unusable.
This occurs regardless of the level of syntax highlighting
(least to more) or whether fonts or colors are used.
Please let me know what other information I can provide.
