pkg subdir for srckit-std

Current version of `packages/XEmacs.rules' assumes old `packages'
subdirs structure in its `srckit-std' target. More precisely, it
assumes that there are `$(CATEGORY)' subdirs, where `$(CATEGORY)' is
`standard', `mule', `wp' and so on. If fact currently there are
`{xemacs,mule}-packages' subdirs.
One has to do some tricks to generate package source distribution.
If it is known that all packages with `CATEGORY = mule' are in
`mule-packages' and others are in `xemacs-packages' then the makefile
rule may be fixed by adding a trivial `case' statement.

crash and where is core?

Hello,
Sorry to disturb you, but my XEmacs when it came up had some small failure
"Error in init file: Symbol's value as variable is void: cache-overlay. I
checked the init file and it was empty. I have some .emacs in /etc/skel. I
am first time user of emacs. So, I had the idea that XEmacs is easier. Maybe
you can help me, although you must probably ask me precise instructions what
to do. But please answer me.
I decided to de-install the packages from RH8.0 which were connected with
XEmacs:

I installed them again package by package. There were no complaints.
However, when I started XEmacs up again and touched the scratch-window or
tried to open a file, XEmacs crashed. Of course I tried to find the core. I
did updatedb, but could not find under the myriad of files "core".
So, here is what I got from the lisp-side:

You would know if it was on, balloon-help pops up a tiny frame. You
obviously don't have it on. :-)

You need to have loaded info (M-x info) before XEmacs knows about
those variables. But it sounds to me like you haven't changed them
from their default values anyway (you would have said otherwise).

Is it just the gzipped files in /usr/share/info? Are the permissions
on that directory, or the file therein, any different from say
'/usr/info' or '/usr/local/info'?
On my system (SteveWare GNU/Linux),
/usr/info drwxr-xr-x root root (0755 user=root, group=root)
and the files are all
/usr/info/*.info.gz rw-r--r-- root root (0644 user=root, group=root)

Buttons in customization buffer broken

I tried to change some of the faces and noticed that with the
exeception of the "Reset" butti=on (which pulls down a menu) the
buttons don't have text; they turn light blue and the description
appears in the minibuffer, but the "done" button does not close
the buffer.

I cannot install these from Pre-Releases

- perl-modes 1.00 ----- Perl support.
because of this:

first, what happened:
$xemacs

directory in which you started the editor, or maybe in your home
directory), and type
gdb /usr/local/bin/xemacs core

or XDB, or SDB. A similar procedure should work for all of
these. Ask your system administrator if you need more help.)

ok, i tried to complie different versions of emacs. tried to use different configure/compile options. well, i failed.
i'm running suse linux and i am quite confused why it doesnt run. well, that's from me.. *shrugs helplessly*

Try
M-x customize-face RET default RET
Enable the Inverse Video radio button and turn the option on.
Finally press [Set]
This does NOT work for me in (emacs-version)

though.

2) Unpack them to: [1]
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/
3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):

1) Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases
2) Tools -> Packages -> List and Install
3) Select the packages you wish to install (there are brief
instructions at the bottom of the packages buffer).
4) Packages -> Install/Remove Selected
5) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.1.14):
