I don't have strong opinions either way on this. One could argue that autoloads are only for the user, ie. for convenience in building a .emacs and having M-x some-unloaded-function Do The Right Thing. On the other hand, I would guess that there is a fair amount of legacy code that doesn't do explicit requires when it needs external symbols. I have a strong preference for *not* putting requires at the toplevel when only defuns are involved as they aren't strictly needed for bytecompilation and only slow things down. I *have* a strong preference for using explicit requires rather than hiding the dependencies in a bytecompilation lisp package like W3 and Gnus do. In my view of the world, one should be able to hand bytecompile xemacs -batch -f batch-byte-compile some-file.el any lisp file in the searched load-path and have it work. Some kind of a global symbol table can be made when packages are built because building from the master source tree always has everything present.

I think XEmacs *should* add this stuff to the run-time path. I'm not sure what the point of a install target for run-in-place is. It's my normal mode of operation and I typically keep the built trees in fixed locations so I can add them to my WM menus.

I have the latest version of all necessary packages (last updated this morning), checked out xemacs with cvs. For some reason it gives the error message shown below. 21-2b10 built and runs just fine. You can simply run-in-place. The problem is, to complete the job we need a new target: make sinstall which does install: ${archlibdir} ＠echo; echo "Installing utilities for users to run." for file in ${INSTALLABLES} ; do \ (cd .. && ln -sf lib-src/$${file} ${bindir}/$${file}) ; \ done for file in ${INSTALLABLE_SCRIPTS} ; do \ (cd .. && ln -sf ${srcdir}/$${file} ${bindir}/$${file}) ; \ done Otherwise you won't have utils like gnuclient on your path.
