[crash] redisplay after widening 25 years, 8 months

This is 100% reproducible. It does not happen on 20.4. System is mips-sgi-irix6.4. XEmacs 21.0-b54. To reproduce: 1. xemacs -vanilla 2. Do a `narrow-to-region' in *scratch* from halfway in the first line through the end of the buffer. 3. Do a `widen'. Notice that the beginning of the first line is not redisplayed. 4. Hit C-l. Boom! strange regexp in postscript-mode 25 years, 8 months

In the postscript-mode the following regexp is used for highlighting strings. This either triggers a bug in the regexp matching or is grossly inefficient (I tend to believe the latter). ;; Proper rule for Postscript strings '("(\\([^)]\\|\\\\.\\|\\\\\n\\)*)" . font-lock-string-face) This shows up when trying to fontify tmac.ps which is part of the groff distribution (53 lines of ps-code). (This was pointed out by Ronald Florence in c.e.x) I have interrupted XEmacs a couple of minutes after evaluating from the start of the buffer (re-search-forward "(\\([^)]\\|\\\\.\\|\\\\\n\\)*)" 1436 t) The file contains a lot of '(' but no ')' at all. How did I get to be the cyrillic expert....oh, yeah, I remember now, but can someone else help here? I haven't set up all my fonts since putting in RedHat 5.1, and I never got printing cleaned up the last go around, though I could print someone else's .ps file of the Hello in many languages. It still doesn't work. Furthermore, using ( syntax for # causes unbalanced paren errors when using meta right/left, since there's #t and #f's in the programs. :-) I wonder why the multiline comment works in lisp mode but not in scheme mode? I'm puzzled. I'll have to put it aside a while, and look again later when it's not expecting it.
