etags.el uses funcall to run the find-tag-hook and other hooks. Yup, and on the ftp site. Um, removing this history is roughly equivalent to purging the world of XEmacs. I guess this is a realistic example of why Richard is so paranoid about patches going into FSF Emacs.

Public apology to Martin and others 25 years, 11 months

After experiencing the joys[1] of Solaris 2, and what works and what doesn't work when -R or -rpath-link is fed to the linker, I wish to apologize for any harsh words I might have written with regards to to Sun-heads proposing doing the same thing on Linux. It is absolutely the *wrong* thing to do on Linux[2], but I now fully understand why it is needed on Solaris. According to the relevant authorities, they own the patent on that pattern of thought. If someone wishes to take this on in a more suitable forum (eg. like an anonyomous post to Usenet through a cypherpunks remailer) the patch to XEmacs for GIF support will be available, but it won't make using programs using the patent any less in violation of the patent if the user is unlicensed. Tartler <cheryldtartler(a)unn.unisys.com> (the person who responded from the LZW licencing department) informed me that we needed a licence, and that "We are unable to provide a free license for your proposed use/distribution, as it would be unfair to our licensees who pay us substantial license fees." Also, looking at http://www.cloanto.com/users/mcb/19950127giflzw.html and http://corp2.unisys.com/LeadStory/lzwfaq.html might give another view of the picture. Nuisance in font-lock.el 25 years, 11 months

When I use ksh-mode in XEmacs 20.4, both types of strings are displayed in font-lock-string-face: echo 'This is comment #1' echo "This is comment #2" However, in XEmacs 21.x, only the first string is using that face. 2.
