Regarding the compat package, I'm ready to set it up, either directly to
xemacs-packages area, or unsupported/ if someone wants to play with it
before putting into official area. The interface was discussed somewhat
in xemacs-design but there's no conclusion yet. Just gimme a note and
I'll set it up...

non-existing Company also carried out contractual
works of supply to the Ministry as well as others.
With the cooperation of Top Government officials in
the Ministry and two senior colleagues of mine in the
Ministry, I was therefore assigned to contact a
trusted and reliable foreign based businessman,
furnish him with the appropriate documents, in laying
claim to this $29.6Million being payment for contract
work. Payment shall then be transferred upon approval
to a safe account as would be provided by you. In
other words, if you accept to be our partner then you
shall be considered, given the pertinent
documentations to have been awarded a contract already
been executed by you for which your Company shall be
paid the sum of US$29.6Million.

This came from the SuSE Linux English e-mail list. I thought it might be of
interest to some of you on the Old Norse List. I am doing my best to convert
to exclusively using UTF-8/16/32 in all my computing activities. I intend to
do this in such a way as to help others cooperate with my efforts. This is,
in my mind, a very important issue. UTF-X should make working with 'special'
characters much easier for everybody (once we learn how to use it.)
Here's a brief description of what I've learned so far:

determine requierments for building XEmacs: How To?

I have been trying to build XEmacs on my SuSE 8 system using the same
./configure SuSE used when they built the XEmacs 21.4.8 for the distribution.
I'm getting arguments from ./configure telling me:
checking for X11 graphics libraries
checking for the Athena widgets
checking for threeDClassRec in -lXaw3d... no
checking for threeDClassRec in -lXaw... no
configure: warning: Could not find a 3d Athena widget library that looked like
Xaw3d.
checking for X11/Xaw3d/XawInit.h... yes
checking for X11/Xaw3d/ThreeD.h... yes
checking for Xm/Xm.h... yes
checking for XmStringFree in -lXm... no
Error: Could not find a suitable Athena library to build with.
I'm assuming this means I am trying to use a version of Xaw3d which XEmacs
doesn't like. How do I determine what XEmacs *does* like?
I took out the athena stuff and hit the same kind of thing with GNU DBM
checking for database support
checking for ndbm.h... yes
checking for dbm_open in -lgdbm... no
Error: Required GNU DBM support cannot be provided.
Since it seems to find the header file, but not the particular string, that
indicates to me there is some kind of a version conflict. I've always found
such issues a frustrating part of working with Open Source. For years I've
been under the impression that I would learn the secret to avioding such
situations. I'm _sure_ there is a place where I can find the information as
to what versions of packages I should be using, right?

unable to adjust fonts in my own builds on SuSE Linux

This is a long standing problem I've had. It simply has not been high on my
priorities. I've decided to address it. If I build XEmacs on my own, I find
that I am unable to set the font size displayed in the buffer. When I
attempt to use the menue to change the font size, it effects the size of the
fonts in the modeline, but not in the edit buffer.
The SuSE built version works fine.
Does anybody know how to fix this? I'm most interesting in using en_US.UTF-8.

Please don't change it. Rendhalver will take care of that, if possible.
I guess it can be done, but there are no guarantees that it will stay in
sync. For example, if we now bump idlwave's package VERSION to 4.15,
then notice a bug in let's say Makefile or package-info.in, we'll need
to release 4.16 though the idlwave inside is 4.15...

not to your local site managers!!
Please write in English, because the XEmacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.
Please describe as succinctly as possible:
- What happened.
- What you thought should have happened.
- Precisely what you were doing at the time.
