Dear Bug Team!
I have a directory named "børn" (containin the danish character
oslash).
Xemacs does not handle this directory correct.
The directory name is UTF-8 encoded, i.e. it is 5 bytes long namely 62
c3 b8 72 6e. When I try to open a file in that dir, xemacs asks me to
create the dir. If I say yes, it creates another dir 7 bytes long
namely 62 c3 83 c2 b8 72 6e.
FYI: The filesystem is ReiserFS.
The problem is reproducable on a 32bit systems as well, and also on
older xemacsens.

8859-1 == Chinese should be fixed now. There will be more of these
lurking; code identification is a neural-network kind of thing
(unfortunately without the learning part at this point).
If you get a misidentification, send a bug report with the expected
and actual encodings, the file (if you can legally/ethically do so),
and the value of LANG when you started XEmacs. (There are internal
variables that I should add to M-x report-xemacs-bug, but they're all
defaulted from LANG, and it's a pretty safe bet you don't mess with
them directly.)
Losing encoding information on revert? Please be more specific.

This would be nice in the long run (for one example, nXML-mode is
heavily dependent on divergent APIs) but is presumably not an option
for 21.4, as GNU's code is totally different now AIUI.

[Bug: 21.5-b28] unusability of VM under 21.5

Dear Bug Team!
As requested by Stephen in the "What is the status of 21.5?" thread on
xemacs-beta, here is a skeleton bug report.
Because of the complexity of the problem, it's not possible with small
effort to produce minimal reproducible examples.
Basically use of VM (version 7.19 in my case) is severely impaired
under 21.5, for the following reasons:
1) There is highly visible reconfiguation of windows during some VM
operations. (Typical VM frame has a summary window at the top, and a
message window at the bottom. Under 21.5, these windows sometimes
disappear from the display and then reappear, when under 21.4 this
doesn't happen.)
2) The position of point in the VM summary buffer/window does not
behave. Some operations appear to move point in the window when it's
not expected, resulting in, e.g., the wrong message being deleted when
you hit 'd' expecting to delete the next message.
When I have time, I'll try to produce concrete examples.

Pushing new vc towards regular packages tree

Hello,
After three and half years of snail-pace porting work, I think the new vc from
the unsupported area is now in a state where it makes sense to start pushing
it towards the regular XEmacs packages tree.
For those unfamiliar with it, the new vc consists of vc*.el and log-edit.el
from GNU Emacs 22, and mercurial.el and vc-git.el from respective upstreams.
Compared to the current vc package, new supported backends are GNU Arch, GIT,
Meta-CVS, Mercurial, and Subversion.
I've been using the new vc package exclusively for quite some time now, but as
I'm not a hardcore vc user and use only CVS, Subversion, Mercurial and GIT
(two latter only now and then), it is expected that there are some rough
edges here and there. Additionally, the current pcl-cvs, vc-cc and
prog-modes (p4.el) packages have been only compile tested against the new vc.
I've done most of the testing with XEmacs 21.5, but have tried to be careful
to get it to work with 21.4 too.
The diff against the old vc is so large that I don't think it would be useful
to post a diff here or to xemacs-patches.
I suggest we proceed like this:
1) Commit the new vc to xemacs-packages/vc (AI: me)
2) Clean up no longer needed stuff from diff-mode.el (AI: me)
3) Push the new package to the experimental area (AI: Norbert)
4) Let it stay in the experimental area until issues with pcl-cvs, vc-cc, and
p4.el have been ironed out or reported to work as-is
(AI: users/developers/hackers of pcl-cvs, vc-cc and p4.el, I'm available to
help out to the extent I can)
I've prepared steps 1 and 2, they're just a "cvs ci" away. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, yes. Well, or at least that's when I started keeping a
ChangeLog for the sync, it might have actually been even a bit longer :P

Can't say for certain offhand, but comments slightly above the line you
patched include:

...so I suppose the whole (defadvice vc-user-login-name) no longer applies to
the new vc. If it's not needed, perhaps there's a way to detect it and skip
the code altogether? There's already a (unless (fboundp 'process-file))
around it, but perhaps that's for some other purpose?

I have no experience with easypg, but let me know if something in vc needs to
change to accommodate its needs.

2) Unpack them to: [1]
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/
3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):

1) Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases
2) Tools -> Packages -> List and Install
3) Select the packages you wish to install (there are brief
instructions at the bottom of the packages buffer).
4) Packages -> Install/Remove Selected
5) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.1.14):
