add-change-log-entry behaves different in different dir

I am confused about the behaviour of the add-change-log-entry
function.
I have 2 files of the same type, say test.tex and test2.tex, in 2
different directories say foo1 and foo2.
When I call this function say in a test.tex (in foo) or in
test2.tex (in foo2) the following can happen
- test.tex: I am asked to confirm the name of the changelog
file, which is per default ~/ChangeLog
- test2.tex: I am asked to confirm the name of the
changelog file which is per default ~/foo2/ChangeLog
(that is relative to the directory and this is the
behaviour I want)
This different behaviour has nothing to do whether the Changelog
file exits already in the foo2 directory or not. It seems also to
be independent of the directory or the file type.
Per default I have set
change-log-default-name to nil
and more important
add-log-file-name-function to nil
as well since the documentation states

And all add-log-buffer-file-name-function' nil

However when I call add-log-file-name-function it seems that the
nil value is overwritten to ~/ChangeLog and I don't understand
why.

I had just finished reading through my inbox with Gnus. I was on my way
out, and Gnus was passing messages marked as spam to bogofilter when
XEmacs crashed. This looks similar to the last crash in GC that I
reported. Here is what XEmacs said on its way out:

Package 'ediff' on Windows XP

Hello,
recently I got XEmacs (21.4.19) installed on Windows XP (SP2). It is
working, however it is not possible to start the 'ediff' package (I
like to compare two files). I got the message:
"Searching for program: No such file or directory, diff"
In directory /pub/xemacs/packages there is obviously no 'diff' package.
On the homepage I read:
"This native Windows setup kit includes a small set of packages:
c-support, cc-mode, debug, dired, ecb, edebug, ediff,
...
Refer to the Quickstart Package Guide for installing further XEmacs
packages to extend the editor's functionality."
Due to my understanding the packages should work without a special
"activation" - or am I wrong? Below please find the "status" of
packages of my installation (showing ediff as installed).
Could you help me? Many thanks in advance.

Hi John,
I'm happy that you installed one of the pre-packaged Windows setup
kits (that's what you did, right?), but please send support requests
to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org, not to me personally.
That said, I will tell you that printing JWFM (just works for me) -
under the File menu there is a 'Print xxx...' menu item and when I
select that, all the printers I have installed appear on the options
panel.
If this doesn't help, please follow up with an email to xemacs-beta stating:
1. What you did
2. What happened
3. What you expected to happen

Bit limitations in lisp-union.h

With GCC 4.1 and configuring --with-union-type, bignums are broken. The
build log shows that gcc complains in quite a few places about
comparisons always being true due to the limited range of some type.
Here is my analysis of the problem.
Consider XREALINT for an example. The other extraction macros are
similar. With lisp-disunion.h, a Lisp_Object is really an EMACS_INT
(which is "long" on my x86_64 Linux box). The definition of XREALINT is
#define XREALINT(x) ((x) >> INT_GCBITS)
so the type of the result is still EMACS_INT. With lisp-union.h,
though, a Lisp_Object is a union. The definition of XREALINT is
#define XREALINT(x) ((x).s.val)
where the "s" field of the union is defined like this:

so the type of the result is INT_VALBITS of a signed EMACS_INT, not a
full EMACS_INT as in the disunion case. That means that this code from
Fminus in data.c:
return make_integer (-XREALINT (accum));
runs into trouble, because XREALINT(accum) is only a 63-bit quantity,
and so when make_integer expands, the comparison to see if the result
needs to be a fixnum or a bignum ALWAYS decides on fixnum, because a
63-bit quantity always fits. What I really wanted to know was whether
the negation of the 64-bit expansion of accum.s.val would fit into a
fixnum.
I haven't tried this yet (I'm out of time for the day), but my initial
reaction would be to try making this modification to lisp-union.h. I
suspect it will not cause any trouble, because the types of the
corresponding definitions in lisp-disunion.h are already the full (i.e.,
not bit-restricted) types.

After your 2006-06-03 change 'unicode_to_ichar' in `unicode.c' calls
`snprintf' regardless of `HAVE_SNPRINTF' definition. If system does
not have `snprintf', building `$(RAW_EXE)' (`temacs' or whatever)
fails. Please fix.
