They already have what Mule problems we have (with the added spice of no
concrete plans for supporting Unicode!), and have even fewer people
interested in fixing them.

... because you and me are the only people that use its features, or that
have a real interest in doing so. Not because of the quality of the code, in
itself, if the Mule issues were routinely affecting monolingual English
speakers they would have been resolved long ago.

What? No. Its Windows support has always been irrelevant to me as a Unix
user, it has never got in my way, and it’s much, much better, faster, and
saner code than is Mule-UCS or the GNU approach.
It’s oriented towards Mule, sure, but Mule is what we have.

Much like Perl, I imagine. That’s not a disadvantage in itself.

Ben’s codecs aren’t finished. What Unicode-internal stuff I wrote tried to
use them, and ended up rewriting them. And that’s not finished either.

mulitlingual packages exist” market, since those packages are in the main

[Success] XEmacs 21.5-b27 crashes nastily on current Debian 'sid'

I just updated my Debian system, which included a bunch of X11.7.0
X.org updates as well as glibc, and probably miscellaneous libraries
too.
It crashes on startup on X11. The first crashes I got were in the
tabs code, but it now crashes without the tabs, and I've seen crashes
in the specifier code. I've tried with and without union-type, too.
It doesn't seem to be a gcc issue, although that's updated from 4.0 to
4.1 with this update, as I'd had no trouble with 4.0, and building
with --with-compiler=gcc-4.0 doesn't help. I'm also getting similar
crashes from old binaries.
Starting with -nw seems to avoid the crash, so it's probably something
X or maybe Xft related.
I really don't have a clue what's going on yet, but bleeding-edge
Debian users probably should be very careful.

Eventually we should recode all our sources to Unicode UTF-8 as the
standard encoding. I'm willing to present rationales for Unicode and
UTF-8, but I believe we already have working consensus that those are
long-term goals, so have omitted them here.
Currently there is an existing standard for Lisp (ISO-2022-JP, which
is actually a general internationalized standard despite being
designed for Japanese) and we'll need to maintain backward
compatibility for 21.4 for a while. I'm not sure of what issues might
be involved for C sources, but in X11-related code there are external
standards for strings (X Compound Text) and font names (ISO 8859/1)
that need to be considered, and in MS Windows-related code there is a
bias toward UTF-16 rather than UTF-8 as I understand it. Finally, ISO
8859/1 is the existing standard for ChangeLogs. (I'm describing from
memory, but I'll supply documentation if it's important; my point here
is to give a somewhat accurate description of where we are, not to be
authoritative.)
I propose the following process for 21.5 and the packages:
Stage 1: Re-encode all plain text documentation in UTF-8. That
includes READMEs, PROBLEMS, etc, and ChangeLogs. Of these, as far as
I know only the ChangeLogs contain non-ASCII characters, frequently in
contributor names and occasionally in Mule-related logs. So mostly
this would simply mean establishing a standard that non-ASCII *is*
permitted if encoded in UTF-8, and some guidelines to avoid gratuitous
backward incompatibility where ASCII would do.
Stage 2: Re-encode the C sources in UTF-8. I believe this currently
affects only comments and some strings in Mule code, mostly related to
input methods. Probably this would be easiest if concurrent to
introducing Unicode as the internal coding for XEmacs.
Stage 3a: Re-encode core Lisp in UTF-8, and remove the special
treatment of Mule files. This would involve a small amount of code
allowing the Lisp reader to read UTF-8 whether Mule was configured or
not, and some decisions about how to handle non-ISO-8859-1 characters
in no-Mule. (This might be moot if we decide to remove the no-Mule
option, but I think that's unlikely to happen soon.)
Stage 3b: Re-encode Info and other shared documentation (man pages)
in UTF-8. This has the problem that TeX doesn't like Unicode very
much yet, although there are solutions for European languages.
Stage 3c: Provide a parallel set of Mule packages encoded in UTF-8 for
XEmacs 21.5 and above. This would also require an infrastructure for
automatic transcoding.
Stage 4: Unify the utf8-packages and xemacs-packages hierarchies, and
make the mule-packages hierarchy obsolete.
The target time-frame would be to accomplish Stages 1-3 by the release
of 22.0 (the presumed release version for the 21.5 code base), and
Stage 4 for 22.2 (or maybe 22.4).
I don't see any real reason not to proceed with Stage 1 immediately
after maybe a 2-week discussion period.

Xemacs crashes on opening file

Dear Xemacs bug team,
I am running the latest version of Xemacs installed by Fink on my Mac OS X
10.4 system, and it crashes (almost) whenever I try to open a file. It
crashes when I try to open Makefiles, .C files and .f files, but .log files
and .txt seem to work (and it seems that it's the extension that is the
problem - I tried ls > tmp.txt and ls > tmp.C, and the .txt file opened but
not the .C file). One possible problem, viewing the "System info" below,
could be that xemacs believes that the system is darwin-7.5, when in fact
it's 8.6; if I do a uname -a it gives:

I really love Xemacs and this problem is a severe check doing programming
on my PowerBook. Could you please help me?

I'm not sure I understand the impact on 21.4. Stages 1-3b just refers
to the 21.5 source tree, and not packages?
Does 21.5 have to be promoted to stable prior to Stage 4?

Here's another report from a static checker, but I'm having trouble
determining whether this is one to worry about or not. In redisplay.c,
take a look at create_string_text_block, starting on line 4588 of the
21.5 code. A comment near the top remarks that the buffer argument to
be nil, and indeed the local variable named b (which is the
corresponding struct buffer *) is checked for NULL-ness up there. I
have looked carefully through this code and do not see the value of b
changing anywhere. This is important, because a checker flagged a use
of b waaaaaaay down on line 4998, where it gets passed to
add_control_char_runes, which immediately dereferences it.
So the question is this: if the buffer argument to
create_string_text_block is null, is it possible to reach line 4998 and,
if so, what should we do about it?

Catch declarations in funny places

Since we've had several instances of variable declarations not at the
top of a block (which is allowed by C99 and C++, but not by the older
ANSI C rules), I would like to propose that we add
-Wdeclaration-after-statement to the default warnings used when
compiling with gcc 3.4+. (That option did not exist in gcc 3.3 and
earlier.)

I just wanted to let other developers know that bignums are broken with
GCC 4.X + optimization, period. The patch mentioned above does fix
things up a little, but what appears to be a GCC code generation bug
breaks bignums badly if any optimization whatsoever is turned on. See
gcc bug 28045 for more information.
I would still like to commit the patch mentioned above, if there are no
objections, since my reading of the C99 spec indicates that it is
necessary. On the other hand, I am not a language lawyer.
