xemacs 21.5.26 and case-insensitive file systems

XEmacs on MacOS treats the file system case-sensitively, and deals
badly with files that have spaces in their names (which are common
here). The major culprits in these bugs are:
1) minibuffer completion of file name case;
2) *shell* buffer completion of file name case;
3) *shell* buffer completion of file names with backslash-quoted
spaces;
4) *shell* buffer tracking of the current directory when the
directory has a space;
5) shell-resync-dirs when the current directory has a space.
I've fixed 1, 2, and 3, below. 4 and 5 still elude me.
Someone really ought to grep the whole tree for "completion-ignore-
case" and "windows-nt", because there are incorrect assumptions
hardcoded in several places.

RFC: Mailing list cleanup

I planning a clean up of the XEmacs mailing lists, of which there are
currently about nine too many.
First let me apologize for the many CCs, but I wanted to make sure
that everybody concerned would see the initial proposal. Discussion
will continue on the XEmacs Beta Testers <xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org> list
only. I don't expect to actually implement for a couple of weeks, and
that list is open post. So if you are not a member of xemacs-beta, it
should suffice to follow discussion via the web archives or gmane, and
post comments to xemacs-beta if you have any.
Implementation will be preceded by a reminder so that people can
update their subscription configurations appropriately (defaults are
described below).
Proposed changes:
The first proposal is to redirect xemacs-beta-ja, xemacs-users-ja,
xemacs-nt (aka xemacs-winnt), and xemacs-mule to xemacs-beta. None
are getting much traffic (perhaps all together 1-2 posts per month),
so current subscribers to those lists will be automatically
resubscribed to xemacs-beta with delivery turned *off*. Addresses
that are currently members of several lists including xemacs-beta will
be left in their current state on xemacs-beta. I realize this will
mean that people could post to xemacs-nt (for example) and miss the
reply, but most people don't prune addresses in replies, so that
should be rare. I believe this small risk will be outweighed by the
benefit of having more eyes look at one's post.
The Japanese language lists could be a problem if a lot of Japanese
were to be posted, but unfortunately that seems unlikely. If it
becomes an issue, we can resurrect a -ja list.
The second proposal is to alias xemacs-news to xemacs-beta. This is
the bidirectional mail-news gateway. It has never worked well, and
with almost no traffic, now is a good time to reorganize. Unlike the
last times this came up, there are now reasonable alternatives such as
Google and Yahoo for comp.emacs.xemacs. And I believe that since the
news gateway generally doesn't work, this will get much better service
for posters. Again I propose to move the subscriptions to xemacs-beta
with delivery turned off, with the same rationale as above.
The third proposal is relevant only to administrators of XEmacs
projects resources. Currently this traffic is split into web-related,
mail-related, and general admin (miscellaneous). It will be unified
by aliasing the first two to xemacs-admin.
The fourth point is to eliminate xemacs-binary-kits: zero traffic, no
purpose anymore, since OS distros now handle this, except for the
Windows native distribution we handle internally.
Finally, the trickiest proposal is related to the development
workflow. Currently patches enter the workflow by being posted to
xemacs-patches, where they are discussed and review decisions are
posted. Then when a patch is committed, CVS automatically sends a
log, including a copy of the patch as committed, to xemacs-cvs.
The proposal is to redirect the CVS log/patch traffic to
xemacs-patches.[1] This would have the effect of having some patches
appear twice on xemacs-patches (once when submitted, and again when
committed). On the other hand, currently all patches appear at least
once on xemacs-patches, and then again on xemacs-cvs. This redundancy
would be greatly reduced, since many current patches are committed
when they are submitted.
This would increase the volume of traffic on xemacs-patches
substantially, probably an increment of 1/3 to 2/3 of the current
volume. However, most of this additional could be automatically
filtered, since decide-and-commit messages will have a 'bot-generated
subject like
Subject: CVS update by stephent xemacs/src ...
while submit-and-commit messages will have the familiar
Subject: [AC] Fix minor window-config problem
style of subject. This will require some discipline by the
reviewer/submitters, but it should be easily automated via Didier
Verna's patcher.el which is in common use.
In all cases current traffic only will be affected. The historical
mailing list archives will be left in place, as is (or perhaps cleaned
of spam to some extent---that's one of the projects this
reorganization may free up some of my time to do!) No enhancements to
the archive services are considered here. Requests and proposals are
of course welcome, but this proposal won't affect them.
The proposed streamlined configuration is
comp.emacs.xemacs* existing newsgroup
xemacs-admin XEmacs project resource management (admin)
xemacs-announce* low traffic, for stable and SUMO releases
xemacs-beta tester/bug report list, some user issues
xemacs-buildreports* "write-only" list to record test results
xemacs-design* developer list for architecture, etc
xemacs-mirrors* web and ftp mirror management (admin)
xemacs-patches patch submission and workflow
xemacs-review* "policy" board discussion (admin)
* = Basically unaffected by the reorganization.
The workflow as described in the beta.info document (in 21.5) is not
going to change much. From the point of view of that document, the
lists being merged in to xemacs-beta are already superfluous.
Comments and help would be very welcome!
Schedule:
I expect to do some necessary testing and prototyping of various
functionality for about two weeks, then proceed to implementation.

xemacs-patches needs to lose the "commit-and-review" patches which are
(a) available from cvs diff and (b) available from xemacs-cvs. One
reasonable manual approach has been taken recently: post a "patch
omitted because you can see it on xemacs-cvs" admin notice to XEmacs
patches. That seems reasonable to me; xemacs-cvs would remain
read-only to everyone but the 'bot, and the APPROVE/COMMIT/discussion
traffic would stay on -patches. This was not supported by anyone, and
opposed by at least one reviewer.

When something in that package did, did not bother to document it
fully, just remembered to avoid loading it. Even

Right. Is not core `lisp' directory first in `load-path' when
`-no-autoloads -vanilla' are specified, when compiling packages in

regular interactive one.

Disagree. He may be even sophisticated, but he has time only for his
own modifications, not for meddling with some nearly unpredictable

Slowness in XEmacs 21.5.26-carbon-b5

Dear Bug Team!
I am running Mac OS X 10.4.6 on a PowerPC G4 (1GHz).
I recently reported a crash in a separate email, and I understand
that's unlikely to be worked on
in the near future. However, in the ensuing discussion Stephen
Turnbull requested that I also file a report detailing the slowness I
have observed in this version of XEmacs. I can not tell whether this
slowness is specfic to the Carbon port, as I currently have no other
hardware to test it on.
Anyhow, here are the details. My .xemacs/init.el file contains the
following and I have no other customization files (no .emacs or
custom.el):

If I now start a fresh XEmacs when I have nothing else (except for a
terminal program with a shell and standard system processes) running
on the machine, split the screen on the frame that comes up into 2
windows, visit any file (for example, the above init file) in one
window, and then switch to the other window which has the *scratch*
buffer, I can now easily type too fast for XEmacs to keep up. That is
to say, if I type a sentence quickly, then at the moment I stop
typing, the last three to four characters have not yet appeared on
the screen and only show up one at a time thereafter as I watch. This
is unusably slow -- the practical consequence is that I sometimes
lose track of where I am in a series of rapid edits, look at the
screen to check how things stand, and then return to typing -- only
discover later that I did some of the edits twice because they had
not yet showed up when I checked that first time, but were "in the
works." Thus my file ends up in a mangled state.
By way of comparison, I have been unable to get ahead Emacs CVS
22.0.50 20060616 compiled for Carbon no matter how fast I type. Thus,
I am using FSF Emacs for now, but would switch back to XEmacs if
speed (and crashes) were not an issue.
Note I am not some sort of typing god, just a below-median touch
typist, maybe 40 WPM or so.
I include my init.el because as far as I can tell, the speed seems
better without it, although since I have used a separate minibuffer
since Epoch, I have not used XEmacs much without any init.el. Also
sometimes the speed seems OK, sometimes not, on the very first window/
buffer/file, that's why I mentioned splitting the screen and visiting
a file. It appears reliable to me that at that level of "complexity"
of what XEmacs is displaying, I can easily type ahead of it.
Generally speaking, it appears to me that the more complex the
display (more windows, frames, etc.) the easier it is to type ahead
of XEmacs.
Anyhow, I'm not expecting any specific resolution at any specific
date on this issue; I'm just sending this report on Mr. Turnbull's
request and in the hopes it may provide some help in honing XEmacs --
I have gotten a great deal of valuable use out of it in the past and
hope to again in the future, it's just not usable right now.

I cannot reproduce this error in either 21.4 or 21.5. In both cases,
comint-interrupt-subjob worked normally for me. Please do M-x
report-emacs-bug so we can get more information about your environment.
Also, since you have a locally modified shell.el and/or comint.el, you'd
better tell us about your modifications, too, since they may be
affecting this problem.

[Bug: 21.4.19] Binary characters in buffer causes emacs to crash

XEmacs crashes when trying to view a buffer that contains some strange
binary (i.e. non-roman) characters in it.
It crashes and prints out the following message:
Fatal error: assertion failed, file /usr/src/xemacs-21.4.19/src/redisplay-msw.c, line 563, runs[i].dimension == 1
Aborted (core dumped)
I first saw this bug when I had received some SPAM email containing
Chinese or Japanese characters in it, and was reading the mail using
Gnus. It would cause Xemacs to crash when trying to display the
article summary buffer in Gnus (which I assume was trying to display
the Subject line).
When composing this bug report, I've discovered that it is not just a
problem in Gnus, but it will also cause xemacs to crash when simply
editing a buffer with those characters in it.
Below is a uuencoded example of a file that triggers the
bug. I had to uuencode it so it won't crash emacs when I
tried to insert it; uudecode it before testing.
To reproduce the bug, simply try to visit the file. It is
expected that xemacs will simply display the file in a
buffer, but it crashes instead.
