3) Re-start XEmacs.

[Bug: 21.5-b21] XEmacs mistakes Swiss German for Chinese

Dear Bug Team!
I notice that XEmacs's built-in coding system deduction has a funny
deficiency. It is able to deduce correctly that most of my Germn input
files are coded in iso-latin-1, apparently by analysing the
distribution of the German special characters äöüÄÖÜß. But for the
following text it fails badly and assumes Chinese Big-5 encoding:

Sollte der Richter der ganzen Erde nicht Recht üben? Da
sprach der HERR: Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Gerechte in der
Stadt finde, so will ich um ihretwillen dem ganzen Ort
vergeben. Und Abraham antwortete und sagte: Siehe doch, ich
habe mich erdreistet, zu dem Herrn zu reden, obwohl ich
Staub und Asche bin. Vielleicht fehlen an den fünfzig
Gerechten nur fünf. Willst du wegen der fünf die ganze Stadt
vernichten? Da sprach er: Ich will sie nicht vernichten,
wenn ich dort 45 finde. Und er fuhr fort, weiter zu ihm zu
reden, und sagte: Vielleicht werden dort vierzig gefunden.
Und er sprach: Ich will es nicht tun um der Vierzig willen.
Und er sagte: Der Herr möge doch nicht zürnen, dass ich noch
einmal rede! Vielleicht werden dort dreissig gefunden. Und
er sprach: Ich will es nicht tun, wenn ich dort dreissig

Aber sie sagten: Nein, sondern wir wollen auf dem Platz
übernachten. Als er jedoch sehr in sie drang, kehrten sie
bei ihm ein und kamen in sein Haus. Und er machte ihnen ein
Mahl, backte ungesäürtes Brot, und sie assen. Noch hatten
sie sich nicht niedergelegt, da umringten die Männer der
Stadt, die Männer von Sodom, das Haus, vom Knaben bis zum
Greis, das ganze Volk von allen Enden der Stadt. Und sie
riefen nach Lot und sagten zu ihm: Wo sind die Männer, die
diese Nacht zu dir gekommen sind? Führe sie zu uns heraus,
dass wir sie erkennen! Da trat Lot zu ihnen hinaus an den
Eingang und schloss die Tür hinter sich zu; und er sagte:
Tut doch nichts Böses, meine Brüder! Seht doch, ich habe
zwei Töchter, die keinen Mann erkannt haben; die will ich zu

unter den Schatten meines Daches gekommen sind! Aber sie
sagten: Zurück da! Und sie sagten: Da ist einer allein

schon als Richter aufspielen! Nun, wir wollen dir
Schlimmeres antun als jenen. Und sie drangen hart ein auf
den Mann, auf Lot, und machten sich daran, die Tür
aufzubrechen. Da streckten die Männer ihre Hand aus und
brachten Lot zu sich herein ins Haus; und die Tür
verschlossen sie. Die Männer aber, die am Eingang des Hauses
waren, schlugen sie mit Blindheit, vom kleinsten bis zum
grössten, so dass sie sich vergeblich mühten, den Eingang zu
finden.
(Didn't succed in making the sample shorter, sorry.)
I experimented and deduced that this is because the text is in Swiss
German spelling, which is almost exactly the same as standard German,
but crucially does not ever use ß, only äöüÄÖÜ; changing the ss in
this text to ß makes XEmacs realize that it is indeed German.
Apparently XEmacs assumes that it can't be German if there is no ß, so
perphaps it's Chinese. I propose that whatever mechanism does this
analysis (apparently in C somewhere?) should not be conditioned on ß
at all, since it is not reliably present, and in fact after the latest
spelling reform is much less common even in standard German.

Repeatable. Revert the patch, no crash.
By the way, there are changes in src/symbols.c and src/sysfile.h that
aren't in the ChangeLog. I assume these are due to your commit.

Generally, I agree. Let's assume for a moment that metacity, kwin (yes,
it's KDE's WM) and others all share one and the same bug that gets
triggered by XEmacs. Other apps aren't bothered by that bug.
Apart from the fact that I don't believe all other apps implemented
some workaround, the question IMHO is: If this hypothetical bug is so
wide-spread but of almost no impact [on Linux] - is it in XEmacs'
and its users' best interest to be standards-compliant but affected?

I have no idea and I don't really care to speak frankly. Maybe that's
simply a bad idea?

Absolutely true. Still, XEmacs3 has troubles being used with at least
two major WMs and a minor one. I think that warrants investigation and
fixing this issue.

That's great. I'd just prefer if they did not run in the opposite

While I do *not* speak in favour of populism in general, I prefer my
software fully functional. And I think most users do.
I do understand your point, Glynn, but I'm more pragmatic. If something
is broken with "really, really popular" software, fix it. If that means
sacrificing some compatibility with correct software, investigate the
impact and *then* decide about what to do.

How do you think will WM devs react if I tell them XEmacs features
this strange behaviour but no other software? :-)
Unless they're using XEmacs themselves they'll more or less politely
ignore me. Actually, last time I addressed this issue with the KDE guys
they did exactly that and I can't really blame them.

[Bug: 21.4.18] Bigger fonts overwrite the modeline in split windows

Dear Bug Team!
To reproduce the bug:
- M-x split-window-vertically
- Create some enriched text with one line bigger then the rest in the
lower window
- Scroll down so far that the bigger line leaves the lower screen
- The bigger lines overwrites the modeline
I attached two pictures to show the effect.

Hi there,
I am running a site with Fedora Core 4
Linux 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 #1 Thu Jun 2 22:55:56 EDT 2005 i686 athlon i386
GNU/Linux
under Gnome desktop 2.10.0
with Xemacs installed.
The problem we have is when you maximize the Xemacs window,
it "goes bonkers".
We start Xemacs and then click on the "Maximize Window" button on
top right. This makes the window full screen and then flashes the
tab line (*scratch) as fast as it can go... the flash screen "Xemacs" is
also flashing. It is possible to continue work but the flashing continues
even while you do other things.. typing etc works ok.
The only way to stop the flashing
is to click on the full screen and drop back to default size. The
problem does not happen when resizing by click and drag of the corner.
The problem ONLY happens with xemacs and no other application
has had the problem.
The version we were running was 21.4.17_03 but I have today
installed rpm's for 21.4.18 and then 21.4.19. The problem is still
there. It also happened with FC3
(It was a minor hassle and we hoped it would go away with an
update of xemacs and/or OS but it hasn't hence the report.)
The workaround is, of course, to not use the maximize window
button. It is a hassle though.
Can someone else try and let me know if "it works for them" ??
(or better still a way to fix it :-) )
