In XEmacs,
(message "hello\nyes")
displays "hello" in the echo area. In Emacs, you see both lines.
Does XEmacs support multi-line messages by twiddling a variable of
some kind? I've looked around, but haven't found anything.

Well, for me at least, Xemacs (currently 21.5.26 from cvs) hates metacity, kwin and compiz and has been misbehaving for years. While I can forgive XEmacs' compiz headaches, I don't understand what causes conflicts with KDE's kwin. Especially since XEmacs is the only application I've ever seen showing these phenomena.
I don't experience any flashing but strange re-sizing (while XEmacs should in fact be simply maximised) and mysterious movements of the XEmacs window after switching to another virtual desktop.
I've simply not been using the maximise stuff for those reasons but it *is* indeed annoying.

RFC: Mailing list cleanup

I planning a clean up of the XEmacs mailing lists, of which there are
currently about nine too many.
First let me apologize for the many CCs, but I wanted to make sure
that everybody concerned would see the initial proposal. Discussion
will continue on the XEmacs Beta Testers <xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org> list
only. I don't expect to actually implement for a couple of weeks, and
that list is open post. So if you are not a member of xemacs-beta, it
should suffice to follow discussion via the web archives or gmane, and
post comments to xemacs-beta if you have any.
Implementation will be preceded by a reminder so that people can
update their subscription configurations appropriately (defaults are
described below).
Proposed changes:
The first proposal is to redirect xemacs-beta-ja, xemacs-users-ja,
xemacs-nt (aka xemacs-winnt), and xemacs-mule to xemacs-beta. None
are getting much traffic (perhaps all together 1-2 posts per month),
so current subscribers to those lists will be automatically
resubscribed to xemacs-beta with delivery turned *off*. Addresses
that are currently members of several lists including xemacs-beta will
be left in their current state on xemacs-beta. I realize this will
mean that people could post to xemacs-nt (for example) and miss the
reply, but most people don't prune addresses in replies, so that
should be rare. I believe this small risk will be outweighed by the
benefit of having more eyes look at one's post.
The Japanese language lists could be a problem if a lot of Japanese
were to be posted, but unfortunately that seems unlikely. If it
becomes an issue, we can resurrect a -ja list.
The second proposal is to alias xemacs-news to xemacs-beta. This is
the bidirectional mail-news gateway. It has never worked well, and
with almost no traffic, now is a good time to reorganize. Unlike the
last times this came up, there are now reasonable alternatives such as
Google and Yahoo for comp.emacs.xemacs. And I believe that since the
news gateway generally doesn't work, this will get much better service
for posters. Again I propose to move the subscriptions to xemacs-beta
with delivery turned off, with the same rationale as above.
The third proposal is relevant only to administrators of XEmacs
projects resources. Currently this traffic is split into web-related,
mail-related, and general admin (miscellaneous). It will be unified
by aliasing the first two to xemacs-admin.
The fourth point is to eliminate xemacs-binary-kits: zero traffic, no
purpose anymore, since OS distros now handle this, except for the
Windows native distribution we handle internally.
Finally, the trickiest proposal is related to the development
workflow. Currently patches enter the workflow by being posted to
xemacs-patches, where they are discussed and review decisions are
posted. Then when a patch is committed, CVS automatically sends a
log, including a copy of the patch as committed, to xemacs-cvs.
The proposal is to redirect the CVS log/patch traffic to
xemacs-patches.[1] This would have the effect of having some patches
appear twice on xemacs-patches (once when submitted, and again when
committed). On the other hand, currently all patches appear at least
once on xemacs-patches, and then again on xemacs-cvs. This redundancy
would be greatly reduced, since many current patches are committed
when they are submitted.
This would increase the volume of traffic on xemacs-patches
substantially, probably an increment of 1/3 to 2/3 of the current
volume. However, most of this additional could be automatically
filtered, since decide-and-commit messages will have a 'bot-generated
subject like
Subject: CVS update by stephent xemacs/src ...
while submit-and-commit messages will have the familiar
Subject: [AC] Fix minor window-config problem
style of subject. This will require some discipline by the
reviewer/submitters, but it should be easily automated via Didier
Verna's patcher.el which is in common use.
In all cases current traffic only will be affected. The historical
mailing list archives will be left in place, as is (or perhaps cleaned
of spam to some extent---that's one of the projects this
reorganization may free up some of my time to do!) No enhancements to
the archive services are considered here. Requests and proposals are
of course welcome, but this proposal won't affect them.
The proposed streamlined configuration is
comp.emacs.xemacs* existing newsgroup
xemacs-admin XEmacs project resource management (admin)
xemacs-announce* low traffic, for stable and SUMO releases
xemacs-beta tester/bug report list, some user issues
xemacs-buildreports* "write-only" list to record test results
xemacs-design* developer list for architecture, etc
xemacs-mirrors* web and ftp mirror management (admin)
xemacs-patches patch submission and workflow
xemacs-review* "policy" board discussion (admin)
* = Basically unaffected by the reorganization.
The workflow as described in the beta.info document (in 21.5) is not
going to change much. From the point of view of that document, the
lists being merged in to xemacs-beta are already superfluous.
Comments and help would be very welcome!
Schedule:
I expect to do some necessary testing and prototyping of various
functionality for about two weeks, then proceed to implementation.

xemacs-patches needs to lose the "commit-and-review" patches which are
(a) available from cvs diff and (b) available from xemacs-cvs. One
reasonable manual approach has been taken recently: post a "patch
omitted because you can see it on xemacs-cvs" admin notice to XEmacs
patches. That seems reasonable to me; xemacs-cvs would remain
read-only to everyone but the 'bot, and the APPROVE/COMMIT/discussion
traffic would stay on -patches. This was not supported by anyone, and
opposed by at least one reviewer.

[Bug: 21.4.19] Binary characters in buffer causes emacs to crash

XEmacs crashes when trying to view a buffer that contains some strange
binary (i.e. non-roman) characters in it.
It crashes and prints out the following message:
Fatal error: assertion failed, file /usr/src/xemacs-21.4.19/src/redisplay-msw.c, line 563, runs[i].dimension == 1
Aborted (core dumped)
I first saw this bug when I had received some SPAM email containing
Chinese or Japanese characters in it, and was reading the mail using
Gnus. It would cause Xemacs to crash when trying to display the
article summary buffer in Gnus (which I assume was trying to display
the Subject line).
When composing this bug report, I've discovered that it is not just a
problem in Gnus, but it will also cause xemacs to crash when simply
editing a buffer with those characters in it.
Below is a uuencoded example of a file that triggers the
bug. I had to uuencode it so it won't crash emacs when I
tried to insert it; uudecode it before testing.
To reproduce the bug, simply try to visit the file. It is
expected that xemacs will simply display the file in a
buffer, but it crashes instead.

Combination of `shell' and `comint' after your commit of 2006/05/25
02:49:48 +0 (marked 2006-05-16 in `ChangeLog') is hosed both in 21.4
and 21.5. In 21.4 after executing `shell' command can not run any
command using minibuffer, including `M-x', `C-x b', `C-x C-f', `f1 k',
`f1 l'. Message is output in echo area:
Symbol's function definition is void: font-lock-unfontify-buffer
(File name) completion in shell buffer also does not work as it
previously would.
Observed that on 21.4
In 21.5 it is broken in another way. Otherwise xemacs works normally,
including minibuffer input. The message
Symbol's function definition is void: font-lock-unfontify-buffer
is output only once after `shell' command is executed.
In shell mode buffer shell prompt never appears, if input command that
must output something, like `echo', no output is seen.
Please fix.
About adding
(add-hook 'change-major-mode-hook 'font-lock-unfontify-buffer nil t)
without
(make-local-hook 'change-major-mode-hook)
in `comint-mode'. The function is intended to change settings in
current buffer, and thus it changes global ones, which itself is
improper, unless there are some special reasons. Adding
`font-lock-unfontify-buffer' is particularly harmful because it *may*
be defined by `font-lock', but not autoloaded in its package;
autoloading the function or loading the file before `comint' may be
done in settings of particular user, but not in every `comint'
installation. In some build configurations it even may be highly
undesirable, because they would dump `comint', but not `font-lock'.
It may be undesirable to even load `font-lock', since it
(unconditionally) enables itself on load (by changing
`find-file-hooks'). (It is generally <against XEmacs policy>, but has
remained so for years.)

New shell is narrowed

I just checked in some fixes for comint/shell. I'm having some trouble
tracking down one bug, though, and could use some suggestions or help.
Platform: XEmacs 21.5 and packages both from current CVS, on either an
i386 or x86_64 architecture.
Symptom: M-x shell gives a blank buffer (i.e., no visible shell prompt).
Furthermore, trying to do anything in that buffer (e.g., press ENTER)
leads to error messages about bad buffer positions.
If you look at the modeline, you see that it says "Narrowed". C-x n w
or M-x widen makes the shell prompt appear, at which point the shell
appears to behave normally. Okay, so why is the brand new *shell*
buffer narrowed? This doesn't happen on 21.4, and the Lisp code is the
same, so what's the difference?
Debug attempt #1
----------------
"I'll just put a breakpoint on Fnarrow_to_region," I think. Hmmmm, that
gets called a LOT. Okay, so I'll get an XEmacs running, type "(shell)"
in *scratch*, then attach with GDB, then press C-j. Fnarrow_to_region
gets called twice ... on *scratch*. It does NOT get called on the new
buffer.
Debug attempt #2
----------------
Okay, so maybe the buffer object is somehow getting created with funny
values in it. Fine, I'll get ready to evaluate "(shell)" like before,
attach, put a breakpoint on get_buffer, get the pointer to the new
buffer object and see if it is already hosed. If not, then I will set a
watchpoint on the begv and bufbegv fields of the buffer object and see
what I get. Ready?
GDB isn't. I can't go more than a couple of steps doing ANYTHING before
GDB reports a segfault in code invoked by GDB, causing it to shut down
the process. I'm sure these are the SIGSEGVs used by VDB, but they're
killing my ability to debug. This is *after* doing "handle SIGSEGV
noprint nostop" to make GDB shut up about them, already. How am I
supposed to debug a VDB-using XEmacs? Anybody? Anybody? Ferris?
So I have a *shell* buffer that is mysteriously and incorrectly starting
life narrowed, and I don't know how to figure out why. Any thoughts or
help muchly appreciated.

I read my email via MH-E in xemacs. Currently (betas as they have appeared
in Fedora Extras, development branch) this hangs when running mh-rmail,
showing:
Fontifying +inbox... (regexps)
[Progress bar, stops at 2.3 or so] [Stop button]
Scanning +inbox...
in the echo area. It becomes totally unresponsive, just the buttons at top
(File, etc) show their menus, but they don't act (i.e., File->New frame
does nothing). The kill button in the Gnome decoration doesn't work either,
fullscreen gives fullscreen but the in-xemacs decorations (scrollbar, etc)
don't adjust to the new frame size, they stay put, only the complete frame
becomes larger. After fiddling with the menu buttons, in the last line of
the echo area it shows instead of "Scanning...":
Warning: Error in `pre-idle-hook' (resetting to nil): Attempt to throw outside of function:To catch `call-process-done' with value `0'
(copied by hand, might have a typo; had to start xemacs with a very wide
frame to get to see it all...). This is /not/ the hung xemacs (guess
why...), but it was started the same way.
The xemacs process just sleeps, it is not in a looping frenzy (says ps(1)).
As you can see, sending mail works fine ;-)
