M-x show-memory-usage
can easily get you the data, see the bottom section of its output.
Make sure not to disable debugging support, which also defines
MEMORY_USAGE_STATS.
Are you building with the exact same configuration you used for
21.5-b18?

[Bug: 21.4.13] run-at-time/start-itimer fails with nil or zero start time

The function `run-at-time' advertises its "time" argument thusly:

If the "time" argument is nil, it gets set to 0, per this comment:

It takes the "time" argument and sends it on to the function
`start-itimer', which advertises the corresponding "value" argument
thusly:

| If your version of Emacs supports floating point numbers then
| VALUE can be a floating point number. Otherwise it
| must be an integer.

`start-itimer' checks that the provided "value" (our original "time")
argument is nonnegative:

Again, that suggests that 0, being nonnegative, is a valid value
here. `start-itimer' then passes "value" on unchanged to
`activate-itimer'.
Finally, `activate-itimer' checks

| (error "itimer timeout value not positive: %s" (itimer-value itimer)))

Despite the advertised interface in both `run-at-time' and
`start-itimer', we cannot schedule a timer for "now" using 0 or nil
for the expiration time; `activate-itimer' rejects both with the error
above.
The variable `itimer-short-interval' looks like it would make a
suitable value for an "immediate" expiration, but the documentation
for both `run-at-time' and `start-itimer' suggest that the user should
be able to indicate "now" or "immediate" with either 0 or null.
One possible solution is to change start-itimer as follows:

Loading the below displays okay for me, except that the proportions of the
font you directed me to, http://www.vector.org.uk/resource/, mean things
line up very badly.
The long-standing Mule x-symbol bug, that’s been biting Uwe Brauer for
years, remains; when files are saved to disk, the x-symbol characters are
written, not the TeX source that they were generated from. That’ll probably
make it unusable for you in general :-( . Still, I’ve a much better idea at
this point why it’s breaking.

Hi,
It would be nice if the 21.5 could easily be configured not to install
itself as plain "xemacs". Is there some way I'm missing to do that
already (or am I the only one keeping both the stable and the working
versions in the same prefix-location and getting annoyed about them
replacing xemacs all the time?)

I’ve looked through faces.el, specifier.c, faces.c and the Lispref, and I
can’t work out a way to assign a specific X11 or Xft font to a given XEmacs
face when displaying a particular Mule character set. I can’t even work out
where you got the information on (define-specifier-tag 'lang-ja) and the
(set-face-font ...) that you’re using in the XFT docs, Stephen. So at least
the docs need more info, and if not we need to add this functionality.

to the end of your code might just get it running for you. I don’t have the
fonts locally to test, unless you’re pointing FreeType towards the PCF

as usual, sjt-xft works fine with -nw (i'm writing this report within
sjt-xft) but it dumps core when run against X and fontconfig
this one seems different from the last i reported, please note that
- i _erased_ the X database (echo | xrdb) before launching xemacs
- i launched xemacs with '-vanilla'
- this is on debian sid, at home i have a sarge system where an
almost latest (i think i built it sunday or monday) CVS runs just
fine both on console and with X and fontconfig
please find the typescript with the lisp and C backtraces in the

How to get the font size

Hello everybody,
for making section headings in LaTeX source code stand out, AUCTeX
uses a variable-pitch font and scales it based on the section level.
In order to achieve this on XEmacs it tries to get the size of the
default face/font, multiplies it with an appropriate factor and feeds
the size back to a defface statement.
The currently released version of AUCTeX uses `face-height' to get the
default size. Steven E. Harris mentioned on the AUCTeX mailing list
that this, as the sum of the face's ascent and descent, does not
correctly reflect the font size. He suggested a solution based on the
function `font-size' similar to the one used in
`custom-face-font-size'.
The problem now is that `font-size' (on X) can return
* an integer if the font size was specified in points,
* a string if the font size was specified in pixels or
* nil if the font size was not specified at all.
In order to catch those cases we now have

scaling factor, converted to a string, concatenated with "pt" and used
for the :size specifier of the defface statement.
Is this an appropriate way to handle this in XEmacs? (I am not really
sure because `font-size' is undocumented and I had to look at
`x-font-create-object' in order to see what it may return.) Or is
there a better method?
