[Bug: 21.4.12] Bad window when closing ediff dialog

Dear Bug Team!
How to reproduce:
1. Start an ediff. The control frame must be enabled.
2. Make sure the mouse if off the XEmacs frame and hit q y
3. You will get the following error:
xemacs: X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 40 (X_TranslateCoords)
Resource id in failed request: 0xc00393
Serial number of failed request: 81079
Current serial number in output stream: 81079
You might need to be running fluxbox.
The problem is in the `x_get_mouse_position' function in frame-x.c.
In the while loop to try to find the innermost window, the second time
this loop is run you get the above error and the XTranslateCoordinates
returns false. If you comment out the while, the program works fine.
Could somebody try this in another window manager?

If there are errors and stuff you want the core people to know about,
it's best to Cc xemacs-beta and ben(a)xemacs.org. (Ben only
sporadically follows the lists. If you're following XEmacs Patches or
check the ChangeLogs and are pretty sure it's not related to a Ben
change, you can leave him out.)
This applies with special force to Mac people (that's why I singled
you out, Chris), as the other main platforms (Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris,
Cygwin, and MSVC++) are built daily by somebody with warnings cranked
to the max, so we'd see them.

I don't rant very often, so I'm going to take the opportunity to let one
loose.:-) This rant is about the last line above, which is *not* part
of Ben's patch, so I'm not ranting in his direction. Here is a comment,
apparently directed to me, stuck in the middle of this code. I've only
been a reviewer for a very short time, and this was apparently put in
prior to that time. I wasn't subscribed to xemacs-patches then, so I
didn't see it. Why wasn't it sent to me in email, for heaven's sake?
(The answer to the question posed above, by the way, is a definite
maybe. We certainly can't deal with mangled C++ names, but wrapping the
symbols the module code needs to see in extern "C" might be sufficient.
However, I don't know what other beasties might raise their ugly heads.
Somebody will just have to try it and see what happens.)
Along the same lines I recently stumbled, quite by accident, across a
ChangeLog entry that says, in part:

Fix shadowing warnings. NOTE: This was already fixed
awhile ago, but reverted by Jerry. Please be careful.
Same rant: why was I not sent email about this? There were no comments
in the code explaining that the "buf" -> "buff" name change was to
prevent a shadowing warning. There were no remarks in the ChangeLog
that said anything like this either. There are no shadowing warnings on
any of my Unix test platforms, so I can only guess that the warnings
occur on Some Other Platform, with developers so braindead that they
think defining the symbol "buf" in system headers is a good idea. I
sent the patch that made the name change with a ChangeLog entry that
explicitly stated that I was making this particular change to reduce the
size of the diff against the FSF version, and it was approved.
Just how, exactly, was I supposed to "be careful"? I agree that
somebody was not careful, but it was not me. It was the person who
originally fixed the warning and didn't leave any clues behind to let
anybody else know what they had done. But I'm the one being fingered as
careless in a file that is now being circulated around the globe. I
would have pointed all this out if somebody had bothered to send me
email first! So the point of this much-too-long rant is to send email
when you have something to say to another developer. Inserting comments
into code and ChangeLogs is not effective communication.
Okay, I'm done ranting now. Time for a nice relaxing dip in the ocean.
Oh wait, I'm in Kansas, darn it....

[Bug: 21.4.12] xemacs dying with symbol not found on Solaris 8/x86

Dear Bug Team!
When using the menu: Options -> Advanced(Customize) -> Emacs ->
Packages -> Packages..., xemacs dies with the following error.
ld.so.1: xemacs: fatal: relocation error: file
/usr/local/lib/libpng.so.3: symbol inflateInit_: referenced symbol not found

This symbol should be found in zlib. The strange thing to me is that
when xemacs is dumped on x86, the reference to zlib is removed. On
sparc, zlib still exists in the dumped xemacs executable. The only
difference in my sparc build is that "-march=i386 -mcpu=pentium3" is
replaced with "-mtune=ultrasparc".

I used the patch supplied in the bug report dated "Thu, 16 Jan 2003
16:01:19 +0900" with the subject "varargs, GCC, Solaris 2.8 -- need
configure test" to get past the error, but I have no idea if that is
the right thing to do.
Also, a request was made to post the output from gcc on a broken GCC
on Solaris:

In 21.4.12, mouse pasting with button2 does not work if zmacs-regions
is nil.
To reproduce:
xemacs -q -no-site-file
M-x set-variable zmacs-regions nil
type abcdef
select abc with button1. Position pointer after def (say), and click
button2. What happens: cursor moves to pointer position. What should
happen: abc should be inserted at the cursor position.
I have also verified that this happens with a clean build from source on
my home system.
I think the previous version I used at home (which didn't have this
bug) was 21.4.8, but I'm not sure, as I had a disk crash and
reinstalled most things.

I tried to open a java file. It has opened this file correctly in
the past w/out problems...but it crashed today.
- What you thought should have happened.
It should have opened & color-coded the code w/out crashing!
- Precisely what you were doing at the time.
I had one perl file open, and was opening a second .java file in
a split window (c-x 2).
