[Bug: 21.4.11] dos windows popup with certain binaries under cygwin 20 years, 4 months

Dear Bug Team! I am using the cygwin version of xemacs version 21.4.11 under Windows XP. My cygcheck output is attached. The problem is that under certain circumstances (to be described shortly) invoking an .exe file causes a DOS window to pop up while the program runs. In some cases the input/output is directed to the dos prompt, making certain inferior modes malfunction. The problem seems to arise when running certain MS-DOS Executable (EXE) files from within xemacs. The problem does not occur when the file type is "MS Windows PE Intel 80386 console executable", which is the typical format for binaries in the cygwin distribution. The problem does not occur for all MS-DOS executables, just some. I am unable to determine the precise common denominator. Two cases in point. First, when running texify.exe from the miktex distribution (which is an MS-DOS Executable) within xemacs, each invocation of latex and bibtex spawned by texify causes the blank MS-DOS window to pop up, but the program runs correctly. Second, when running smlnj as an inferior process, the MS-DOS window pops up and also derails the input and output to that window, rendering the inferior mode useless. The command to invoke SML is in fact a shell script that itself executes an MS-DOS executable. I suspect this may be a PTY-related problem, but I am not certain. I could not find any mention of this problem in the FAQ or archives. Please reply to me directly if you know how to fix or work around this serious problem. Thank you. movement-based mode-hooks 20 years, 4 months

One last thing (famous last words), the only thing about my mail /xemacs setup that currently still annoys me the littlest bit is, that using xemacs as my default editor in mutt, I can't get emacs to drop the cursor down below the message headings. to elaborate: in both mail-mode and the less well-distributed but super-excellent post-mode (mostly designed for use with mutt) there are commands designed to move the cursor to the first empty line in a message buffer. I have mode-hooks callingthese funcitons when either mode is loaded. But, while these hooks worked fine in FSF Emacs, I can't get them to work in xemacs on initial loading of a message buffer (if I switch modes in mid-composition, the movement *will* take place! Also, I should note that I've been haivng this problem when running xemacs iwth the -nw switch -- haven't tested it much in other modes). Someone on the mutt list suggested that the hook might be executed before the file is actually read into the buffer. Does that sound plausible? Is there a way to fix it? thanks again! matt

It looks like nobody has run gen-macro-list.awk since I first submitted it nearly a year ago. :-( It needs to be run to bring macro.list up to date. Do one of you package guys want to grab that, or would you rather I submitted a patch? This isn't fatal, but represents a loss of efficiency. The one exception is combine-after-change-calls, which is called in mmm-mode/mmm-cmds.el. We don't have it. An example of working around that is in prog-modes/diff-mode.el. This is something that should go into the fsf-compat package. I would like to see the running of the two awk scripts become part of the package release/testing cycle somehow, so we can avoid releasing packages that have miscompiled macros in them. Also, per Kyle's recent remarks, it appears that the currently released vm package has not been made properly, since vm-autoload.el has out of date contents.
