In XEmacs 21.0 "20 minutes to Nikko" [Lucid] (i686-pc-linux, Mule) of Thu Mar 25 1999 on myggen configured using `configure --with-mule' Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug and the precise symptoms of the bug: I hadn't touched my XEmacs screen for a while, when suddenly it bombed on me. I was viewing a message in pgnus-0.79 when this happened: Fatal error: assertion failed, file insdel.c, line 364, VALID_CHARPTR_P (ptr) Fatal error (6) Lisp backtrace follows: extent-at(70 Fatal error: assertion failed, file insdel.c, line 364, VALID_CHARPTR_P (ptr) I was unable to locate the core file. Window configurations are broken 25 years

[Note. All of these also occur in real XEmacs usages. Maybe problems like these also cause the crashes Colin sees using electric-buffer-list, because that uses the window configuration stuff] Because in the window configurations, window sizes are stored in pixels, but frame-sizes in lines we get breakage when there is a redisplay in the save-window-excursion with a new fontheight. xemacs -vanilla -eval '(progn (set-face-font (quote default) "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-140-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*") (save-window-excursion (redisplay-device)))' xemacs -vanilla -eval '(progn (set-face-font (quote default) "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-60-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*") (save-window-excursion (redisplay-device)))' [You can actually scroll the cursor off screen with this last one!]. There is code that tries to deal with this (and other frame size changes) in Fset_window_configuration but it fails in the font size change case (because in XEmacs 21.0 font size changes preserve the lines*colums size, not the pixel size). One identified it is easy to come up with other such problems xemacs -vanilla -eval '(save-window-excursion (set-specifier default-toolbar nil) (redisplay-frame))' One could probably continue to do this ad infinitum, (and I have actually seen this happen before). Solution? Maybe we should not blindly copy the window sizes in pixels... Instead we should try to preserve relative sizes. i.e. new-window-width = total-available-width * (old-window-width / old-total-avaliable-with) and the same for height. Of course the real code should do this without floats, deal with over/underflows and should allocate the rounding error pixels to one of the windows. One could also argue that save-window-configuration should also save the relevant specifiers for the tool-bar and the scrollbar etc. Jan

UW imap c-client 25 years

Hi, I have used both nnimap 0.95 and Pine 4.10. Although nnimap is quite usable, the speed difference between nnimap and Pine is *huge*. I was wondering if anybody has looked at using Pine's imap back-end, c-client. I'm not a real xemacs wizard, but I can imagine that this c-client library can be plugged into xemacs 21.2 as a module. Ok. Here it is. I started xemacs like this: xemacs foo.c where foo.c does not exist. I set the debug on error option on and then entered this text in the foo.c buffer: main() { int i; I then placed the cursor AFTER the semi-colon on line 2 and attempted to put a tab in, as if to space a trailing comment, and got this text in the *Backtrace* buffer: Signaling: (wrong-type-argument integerp ?\t) int-char(?\t) read-quoted-char() quoted-insert(1) call-interactively(quoted-insert) Do you need more? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: 'quoted-insert' broken? It's a bug that Ebola notices are not documented in the FAQ.
