CVS problem: xemacs-packages/hack-package-index.el, shell quoting 25 years, 6 months

cvs -z9 -d :pserver:xemacs＠cvs.xemacs.org:/usr/CVSroot checkout \ xemacs-packages did not chekout the above file. cvs update didn't do the trick either. Only an explicit cvs update hack-package-index.el produced the file. What's wrong? I haven't played with any sticky options of CVS. I was able to build binkit for all packages using cygnus tools under Windows NT. -------------------------------------------------------------------- However, I had to change quoting in xemacs -batch invocations to get the Makefiles to work although I use GNU make and bash. -------------------------------------------------------------------- How come? I vote for Backspace deleting backwards and Delete for deleting forward. But I like in the WidowsNT world now. Back in my Sun days I always hated the BS/DEL inconsistencies beteen shell, remote shell, X. Ok; so it's not broken, just turned off during the development period? Or forever, only certian signals (like a sigabort?) will make it autosave? I'm learning to use `screen', and plan to use that to run XEmacs with a gnuclient, so that if my X session goes down, or the gnuserv dies, I can still connect to that XEmacs. (I'm a little ashamed to admit that I've not gotten much farther along in reading the XEmacs sources than where I was at last fall before I took off to go skiing... I'm still studying "Essentials of Programming Languages", (if anyone's heard of it), and am at the point where I think I'll understand XEmacs' byte code engine and reader.) Still plugging away at it... Karl.
