Frustration on new install 25 years, 6 months

I guess I'd forgotten how frustrating it was to do a new XEmacs 21.0 installation. Shouldn't efs come with the main tarball so people can install individual packages without having to download a whole 15MB sumo tarball? How am I supposed to know which other packages I need to download just to get efs to work? I've done this before on my work computer, but now I'm trying to install it on my home PC and am feeling very grumbly because of the difficulty of installing additional packages. I don't want to wait for a 15MB download on my 33.3kb/s modem. Anyhow, on another note, I think this may have something to do with Redhat 5.2 (this is a fresh install), but both 20.4 and 21.0.66 give me this odd error when I move my mouse pointer over the toolbar: Can't instantiate image (probably cached): [xbm :mask-file "/usr/X11/include/X11/bitmaps/left_ptrmsk" :mask-data (16 16 [lots of characters that didn't like being pasted]) ") :hotspot-y 1 :hotspot-x 3 :file "/usr/X11/include/X11/bitmaps/left_ptr" :data (16 16 [lots of other characters that hate being pasted])] I copid the specified bitmap and mask file over from my work computer, which is running an older version of Redhat and doesn't give this error in XEmacs, but it didn't seem to fix anything. Has anybody else seen this? M-x view-processes didn't work until I did M-x load-lib view-process-mode, so I guess the autoload is missing?

I've now installed the DEC lk411-jj keyboard that came with the system and set the DEC defaults and run XEmacs with `delete-key-deletes-forward' set to t and it appears to behave sanely. There are some strange markings above F11 (ESC), F12(BS) and F13(LF). When the language environment is set to English, F11 generates the Escape keysym[1], F12 and F13 generate `F12' and `F13' respectively. In a Japanese language environment, F11 becomes just plain F11. This keyboard has a Remove key that also generates apLineDel like the IBM PC keyboard. Fans of a function key deleting forwards probably ought to think about supporting this. apLineDel not defined. Question for our friends who work at Digital: under what circumstances is the F12 key made into a backspace key? Footnotes: [1] and the key labeled `ESC' generates `grave', but that's irrelevant to this discussion.

Thanks to everyone who has commented.] I was trying to keep the major flames out of xemacs-beta until we had fought it out first, but that was a mistake. Have you ever used EDT emulation in Emacs? It starts off by quizzing the user about where all the keys are. Exploring the Linux kbd package might be a place to start. Fixing finder-inf.el 25 years, 6 months

finder is a package that needs to work. Currently the finder database (finder-inf.el) is built statically at dump time, never updated when new packages are installed, and is put in a location that will definitely cause trouble with Mule XEmacsen and Non-Mule XEmacsen sharing the same package lisp. A simple method of fixing it would be along the following lines. lisp/finder-inf.el gets split into two files similar to how files-mule.el and files-nomule.el are. lisp/finder-inf.el would contain information about everything in the XEmacs core other than lisp/mule. lisp/finder-inf-mule.el would contain information about lisp in lisp/mule. Although these files contain lisp they are data files so it might make some sense to put them in etc/. I am open to either place. Each installed package hierarchy needs a finder-inf.el that is updated as packages are installed and removed. For consistency, its location should match where finder-inf*.el goes in the core. Adding two new functions finder-update-package-keywords (callable from package-ui.el) and finder-batch-update-package-keywords (callable from make) would seem to be enough. Questions, comments?
