ess package status?
17 years, 10 months
Hans de Graaff
Hi,
I've noticed that the ess package (Emacs Speaks Statistics) is not listed
in the package download directory or the package-index. Is there a
specific reason for this? I've checked packages CVS and see that ess is
still included there, without any comments regarding retirement in the
ChangeLog. Also, the upstream project still seems to be active.
Kind regards,
Hans

Bug 21.5.27: Crash when closing confirmation dialog
17 years, 10 months
Ville Skyttä
When closing a confirmation dialog directly using the (usually) "upper right
corner X" instead of using one of the provided cancel etc buttons, XEmacs
21.5.27 crashes. This is on Fedora Core 6.
Original bug report and lisp backtrace: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/224543
Reproducer from the above:
1. (shell) ls >test.txt
2. (xemacs) CTRL-X + F + ~/test.txt
3. (shell) ls >test.txt
4. (xemacs) menu File -> Open..., select ~/test.txt
5. (xemacs) Requestor opens:
Question
File test.txt changed on disk. Reread from disk?
Yes No (empty???) Cancel
6. (xemacs) press window close button
Installation info and gdb backtrace attached.

[Bug: 21.4.20] haskell-font-lock fails without mule (charsetp)
17 years, 10 months
Ken T Takusagawa
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
haskell-font-lock makes a call to "charsetp", a function that is only
present in MULE versions of xemacs. I am running a non-MULE XEmacs
so font-lock-mode fails for Haskell source files. I think you want
to test (fboundp 'charsetp) before calling it.

Once again, that's *your* opinion, clearly valid for you as a user,
and it is valid for you to weight that heavily in deciding that
maintaining an XEmacs package is not a good use of your ESS time. But
my experience as an XEmacs maintainer is that users are pleased with
the existence of the package system, generally satisfied with the
quality, and that as a lurker on the emacs-devel list I see requests
for a package system come up time and again, despite a long series of
"we don't need no steenkin' packages" responses from RMS. I can't
"prove" it, but I believe the package system is a big value-added for
XEmacs.
> But, does anyone else see where I'm coming from?
Of course we do! Your point about the redundancy of multiple package
systems is well-taken.
I just ask that you not unnecessarily discourage others from doing it.
*Do* ask people who can do work you value to do that work rather than
maintain an XEmacs package. That's part of what maintainers are for,
knowing what needs doing most. But if somebody really thinks they are
best suited for maintaining an XEmacs package, what's the harm? :-)

I am not talking about the plant. I am talking about the _package_
_specific_ scripts used for assembling a _particular_ package. The
blueprints/assembly instructions for that package (not the plant
itself).

The text of the GPL is not concerned with how many people care, and
whether they would know where to find the missing pieces.

[Bug: 21.5-b27] lack of LANG environment variable causes initialization to fail
17 years, 10 months
Alec Habig
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
Hi,
If the env. variable LANG is not set, xemacs fails to load any of the
init.el stuff or whatever you've asked it to load from the command line.
It does run, but instead of what one asked it to do it just reports
"Wrong type argument: stringp, nil".
To duplicate this, just "unsetenv LANG" (or whatever the bash equivalent
is) and try to run xemacs. Let LANG be whatever it should be, and
things work no problem.
Smells to me like you've got a "getenv(LANG)" call in there and are
blindly using it to configure stuff, without first checking to see if
the getenv() return value is valid.

Defaulting to the GNU Emacs-derived `sendmail.el' mail client. This facility,
while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to get
better in the medium term. We include it so that bug reports work without
packages; we suggest that you choose and/or install one of the other mail
clients from packages if you're doing something other than M-x
report-xemacs-bug , or even if you are reporting bugs regularly.
To choose a package from those installed, click on "Options" ->
"Internet" -> "Compose Mail With ..." and decide on one from the
list. Gnus and VM are full-featured and have active user communities.
To disable this warning and stick with the old behavior, you can explicitly
initialize `mail-user-agent' to 'sendmail-user-agent .

Re: comint broken with latest sumo

Hi Martin,
I'm using Brian Goetz's "Java: Concurrency in Practice" book in a class
I'm teaching this semester. It was fun to see your name inside the
front cover.

Yes, I agree. I have not had time to work on fixing the comint and
associated shell bugs for months now, either. I propose that we revert
to the versions of comint and shell that were in CVS before I started
monkeying with it. I'll keep the current versions in my workspace so
that I can hopefully iron out the problems eventually, but this
brokenness should not be visited upon everyone else in the meantime.
Regards,
